Providing a mechanism to bypass blocks of content has been an accessibility requirement from the early days of the web. Little has changed regarding the techniques used to satisfy the requirement over the past 20 years, while much has changed in the technologies of the web. SkipTo is a major advancement in implementing the "bypass blocks" requirement using existing document structural elements. Version 3.0 is a complete rewrite of the SkipTo code and a significant update to the user experience. Jon Gunderson and Nick Hoyt from the University of Illinois will be discussing and demonstrating the enhanced SkipTo function. You can see an example of this function at: https://ahs.illinois.edu/ About Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meet-up Our meetings usually consist of two 30 minute segments. If you?re eager to learn more about usability studies and don?t want to wait, we?d suggest this page on usability.gov as a great place to learn more, and this page on validating your design decisions from our design guides. My response continues to be: Avoid these products. Here are three reasons: 1. They don't make your website more accessible - many of their features are attainable with assistive technologies or custom settings in browsers and operating systems, and users who need those features are likely already using them. 2. They don't, and can't, fix a website's accessibility problems. Therefore, they often create a false sense of security for site owners. You're still responsible for taking all the same steps to make your website accessible, whether you're using these products or not. Accessibility consultant Adrian Roselli wrote a blog post last year titled accessiBe Will Get You Sued , which he admits is a hyperbolic title, but the fact is: Several lawsuits have been filed for inaccessible websites, despite those sites having these overlays in place. And in some cases, the overlays are specifically called out as part of the problem. 3. They get in the way. This is arguably the biggest reason to avoid them. They modify your website's code, and I've seen instances where the result is actually a site that's less accessible than it was before the overlay messed with it. Lainey Feingold, a prominent disability rights attorney, agrees. See her article Honor the ADA: Avoid Web Accessibility Quick-Fix Overlays for additional information. As explained in the blog post, we have many automated tools available that we can use for checking accessibility of digital resources, and using those to reduce ? or eliminate! ? our accessibility errors is a critical part of our overall risk management strategy. Check out the blog post for additional details about the campaign, including a list of the many accessibility-related events that are coming up in May, starting this week (Thursday) with the Web Council meeting and Accessible Tech Office Hours. Please join us for another casual and friendly virtual meeting to discuss some accessibility challenges. We currently plan to continue our virtual meetings for the August and September meet-ups. We hope that, in October, we will be able to go back to in-person meetings. Topic 1: Accessibility Review of Sutori The University of Washington Bothell is planning to create a timeline about the History of UW Bothell using a product called Sutori, which is a "collaborative instructional and presentation tool for the classroom." Using this product, stories can be created and viewed by scrolling through, like a timeline, or viewed one panel at a time, like a slideshow. Ashley Magdall, a Web Support Specialist at UW Bothell, is going to discuss the accessibility features of the application and is seeking usability and accessibility feedback. Topic 2: Accessible Pagination Models Pagination and navigation within pages with large numbers of results can be very challenging for keyboard and screen reader users. There are several models and practices for pagination, including infinite scrolling and using fixed pagination navigation. We will explore these practices and discuss the pro and cons for each model. We compared Google Forms, Microsoft Office Forms, Catalyst WebQ, Qualtrics, and Survey Monkey on several common field types, and found that Google and Microsoft produce the most accessible forms. See the blog post, Accessibility Review of Online Survey Tools, for details. And for even more details, I'll be presenting on this topic, and doing a deep dive into the code, at the HighEdWeb Annual Conference next Tuesday - there's more about that at the end of the blog post. Please join us for another casual and friendly virtual meeting to discuss some accessibility challenges. Topic: Accessibility Review of 5 Online Survey Tools University of Washington's UW-IT Accessible Technology Services (ATS) recently conducted a review of five online survey tools to determine which produces the most accessible survey forms. They surveyed the following tools, listed alphabetically: * Catalyst WebQ * Google Forms * Microsoft Office Forms * Qualtrics * Survey Monkey The testing included keyboard-only use, screen reader use, HTML standards compliance and accessibility best practices, plus other accessibility issues such as color contrast. Join us to learn more about the testing performed and the results of that testing. They posted a summary of their results on their blog: Accessibility Review of Online Survey Tools. About Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meet-up Our meetings usually consist of two 30 minute segments. The first 30 minutes of our meetings are dedicated to casually reviewing your projects. This generally includes lots of hands on testing and code review. If you are working on a project and would like to get accessibility feedback from your peers, please let us know and we will add it to the agenda. We always encourage you to bring your own sites and topics, as it is a great learning experience for everyone. Then for the last half of the meeting we have some topics we would like to bring to you to discuss, although we may not have time to cover all of them in depth. Our apologies, we plan to reach out soon. And if you haven?t yet expressed your interest, it?s not too late to join us in planning and executing future meetings. Also, there is a change in co-leadership for the community of practice ? unfortunately for us but great for her, after 10 years at UW, Hyunju Lee is moving on to her next great adventure this week!! We wish her well! But I am thrilled to introduce Jackie DiLorenzo, UX Designer at AXDD, who will be helping co-lead the CoP with me. Topic 1: Review website/applications Reviewing your site/application for accessibility is the main component of this meet-up and we all learn from such reviews. As always, let me know if you would like to review your site/application for accessibility. Topic 2: W3C ARIA-AT Community Group Different screen readers often yield conflicting experiences when presenting a web page, disadvantaging or even excluding some users. These differences also create accessibility design and test barriers for web developers. On the other hand, browsers are interoperable for people who do not use assistive technologies. That is, different browsers provide equivalent experiences. Browser interoperability facilitates an inclusive web. Assistive technology users deserve equal inclusion. The ARIA-AT project aims to empower equal inclusion by realizing interoperability for AT users.
