Topic 1: Review website/applications Reviewing your site/application for accessibility is the main component of this meet-up and we all learn from such reviews. As always, let me know if you would like to review your site/application for accessibility. Topic 2: UMAC UW Colors Contrast Table UMAC has created a UW Colors Contrast table so users can check which combinations of brand colors meet WCAG contrast requirements. The visual complexity can make it difficult to fully communicate passing combinations of colors. We will be exploring and brainstorming how we can communicate passing contrast standards without making it too noisy for screen reader users. You can find the link here: https://cmsdev.uw.edu/cms/docs/uw-colors-contrast-checker/ Note: If you are not on-campus, you will need to be logged in to the UW VPN in order to access this site. Please join us for another casual and friendly virtual meeting to discuss some accessibility challenges. Topic 1: Accessibility of DataWrapper IHME, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, uses a tool called DataWrapper to input raw data and output interactive graphs for the website. The bar graphs (see this page for an example) are not accessible, but DataWrapper has an option to produce tables. Here are some examples of different visualizations using IHME data. Each one uses a different data set. * map: https://www.datawrapper.de/_/0rg2J/ * table: https://www.datawrapper.de/_/1sIx8/ * pie chart: https://www.datawrapper.de/_/abiUO/ Here are some additional examples using one sample data set: * Table: https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/uYAJY/3/ * Bar chart: https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/LF6HI/1/ * Line graph: https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/iNY9i/1/ Topic 2: Accessibility of Mural template selection Mural is using a radio group embedded in a grid for their template sections. We are evaluating this approach for accessibility and would like to get your feedback on this technique. You can explore this by creating a free Mural account at mural.co, navigating to the dashboard, and clicking on the "New Mural" button on the left of the screen. When you click on this button, the modal that appears is the template selection, which uses a grid. We are going to discuss the best way to navigate through the grid and select a template. Please join us for another casual and friendly virtual meeting to discuss some accessibility challenges. Topic 1: Review website/applications Reviewing your site/application for accessibility is the main component of this meet-up and we all learn from such reviews. As always, let me know if you would like to review your site/application for accessibility. Topic 2: Load more vs. pagination approach Greg Schlimm from CoMotion Innovation Center is seeking for feedback on their search implementation. Our accessibility question relates to long lists of posts that can be searched or filtered by category. Typically, we reveal 10 or more results at a time, with a UI for revealing additional posts. Our startup page currently implements a "Load More" approach. You can reveal more startups without a browser refresh, but it has shortcomings when you use the browser back button. Some websites implement a pagination design, with previous, next, and page number buttons. This simplifies the back button and history behaviors, but it requires more page refreshes. Before I get into the bug fixes and history issues, I'd like to hear the pros and cons of these designs. Specifically, I will be focused on this CoMotion startup list, but our conclusions will be applied to other features and websites. https://comotion.uw.edu/our-impact/startups/ This 2016 Smashing Magazine article raises similar questions in an e-commerce context. https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2016/03/pagination-infinite-scrolling-load-more-buttons/ Meeting info * What: Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meetup * When: May 11, 2023 10-11 AM PT] * Where: https://washington.zoom.us/my/hadirangin * Meeting ID: 206 221 1532 About Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meet-up Our meetings usually consist of two 30 minute segments. Participants have been coming to the UW campus every summer since 1993 (although it's been an online program in recent years due to the pandemic). There's more about the program on the DO-IT Scholars website. This year, participants (called "Scholars") will be returning to campus, and one of the features of the program is a two-week web accessibility class, where they will learn the basics of how to check websites for accessibility and report their findings. We're seeking volunteers from the UW to serve as "clients" during the second week. Scholars will have an opportunity to practice what they learned in the first week by conducting an accessibility review of clients' websites, and sharing their findings. Here are some additional details about what we're looking for: - Volunteers can either be an individual or a team, representing a UW department. - The department's website should be fairly simple, not a complex dynamic web application. - At least one representative should be available on *Monday July 24, 2:00 - 3:00pm*, to meet the Scholars and introduce them to your website. Scholars will review up to 5 pages from your site. - At least one representative (ideally the same person, but not required) should be available on *Thursday July 27, 1:30 - 3:00pm*, to receive the results of the Scholars' accessibility review. If we get an overwhelming response, we will need to be selective (sorry if your site is not chosen). However, *anyone who volunteers will also get a free web accessibility consult from our team of web accessibility experts*. If you're interested, please reply to me directly. Also, feel free to spread the word if you know others who might be interested. Thanks! Please join us for another informal and friendly virtual meeting to discuss some accessibility challenges. Topic 1: Review website/applications (open agenda) Reviewing your site/application for accessibility is the main component of this meet-up and we all learn from such reviews. If you have a topic you'd like to discuss or site you'd like to look at, please let me know or simply bring it to the meeting. Topic 2: Update on WCAG 2.2 As of last week the WCAG 2.2 is the official W3C web standard for accessibility. We will be looking into the nine new Success Criteria and try to understand and how to check for them. Terrill Thompson and Jeane Marty will be driving the conversation. https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG22/ Meeting info * What: Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meetup * When: Thursday October 12, 2023 10-11 AM PT * Where: https://washington.zoom.us/my/hadirangin * Meeting ID: 206 221 1532 About Monthly Web Accessibility/Usability Meet-up Our meetings usually consist of two 30 minute segments. The first 30 minutes of our meetings are dedicated to casually reviewing your projects. This generally includes lots of hands on testing and code review. If you are working on a project and would like to get accessibility feedback from your peers, please let us know and we will add it to the agenda. We always encourage you to bring your own sites and topics, as it is a great learning experience for everyone. Then for the last half of the meeting we have some topics we would like to bring to you to discuss, although we may not have time to cover all of them in depth. How to Join the Mailing List We send our announcements typically a week prior to the meetup through various internal mailing lists, including the accessibleweb mailing list - which is open to the public. Please subscribe to that list to receive the announcements if you haven't already done it yet. You can do so by accessing this link: https://mailman11.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/accessibleweb.
