Hi all,

Next Thursday, *May 18th at 4:00pm*, Prof. Beatrice Pelloni from
Heriot-Watt University will be giving the Boeing Distinguished Colloquium *at
SMI 205*. Please see below for the title and abstract of the talk.

Prof. Pelloni is a leading expert in the numerical and mathematical
analysis of wave behavior for several important linear and nonlinear
partial differential equations, with key contributions in the analysis of
linear and nonlinear boundary value problems of dispersive partial
differential equations. For more information, please visit the webpage of
Prof. Pelloni's lab:

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Best,

Ryan

*Title*: Non-smooth behaviour of linearised water waves: the Talbot effect
revisited

*Abstract*: I will describe some surprising phenomena that appear when
periodic linearised wave models such as the linear KdV, BO, or ILW
equations are considered with a discontinuous initial condition. These
phenomena are analogous to the “Talbot effect” observed in the 1850’s in
linear optics.

I will show the result of experiments as well as the mathematical analysis
of the models, and discuss the dependence of this effect on the linearity
and the boundary conditions, to conclude that it is remarkably robust,
leaving its echo in the solution of a wide variety of problems.
