It has been nearly three years since Amplitude`s last substantial article on this subject, and the market has changed a lot since then. There are more companies to choose from, with a wider price range and a broader spectrum of product types-including upper-limb prosthesis covers. Since we?re badly overdue for an update, we thought we?d pull something together ASAP for the newsletter, with the possibility of a more heavily researched followup in a future print edition. To compile the list below, we started with input from a few trusted sources (both prosthetists and amputees), added some insights from online amputee support forums, and sprinkled in a dash of Google homework. There may be an option or two we didn?t catch (write us if you spot any), but we?re confident all the biggest players appear on the list below. An infection occurred which led to the amputation, the news outlet reported. Davenport, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, said this won't be a setback. He's also recovering from right shoulder surgery. This won't be the first time an NFL player has played without a finger. But to get up the following day and run another -- and repeat the routine for the next three-and-a-half months -- takes a particular blend of stamina, dedication and what some would call insanity. At least, that's what Jacky Hunt-Broersma, an amputee endurance runner based in Arizona, might have thought before she took up the sport nearly six years ago. "I wasn't a runner before I was an amputee," she tells CNN Sport, "I thought runners were crazy ... But I kind of just gradually got addicted to it a little bit." Fast-forward to 2022 and the 46-year-old Hunt-Broersma has just completed the self-set feat of running 104 marathons in 104 consecutive days between January and April. We have been finding out about phantom limb pain and how technology can help. Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is the perception of pain or discomfort amputees feel resonating from their missing limb. The pain is described as shooting or stabbing pains. Heat, pressure, cramping, itchy and crushing sensations are also reported. Of the thousands of amputees in the UK every year roughly 85-90% experience PLP to some degree. The pain can begin as early as a week after amputation and can last years. The pain is usually intermittent and can disappear or lessen over time with the right treatment. However, PLP can have a devastating effect on mental and physical health. These patients often suffer from neuropathy, a loss of sensation in the lower extremities, and are therefore unable to detect damage resulting from an ill-fitting prosthesis, which leads to the amputation of a limb. In Biomicrofluidics, Canadian scientists reveal their development of a new type of prosthetic using microfluidics-enabled soft robotics that promises to greatly reduce skin ulcerations and pain in patients who have had an amputation between the ankle and knee. More than 80% of lower-limb amputations in the world are the result of diabetic foot ulcers, and the lower limb is known to swell at unpredictable times, resulting in volume changes of 10% or more. We can?t add any clarity to the discussion, and it wouldn?t serve our purpose (nor anyone else?s) to stir the pot. But the week?s events did get us wondering: When did the Justices last consider limb loss in any substantive way? We recently became aware of one amputee-related case that reached the Supreme Court, and was argued by an amputee lawyer-it?s covered in our upcoming July/August issue. Some minor irritation can all too easily graduate into full-blown infection and make it painful to use your prosthetic.
