But when a limb or other body part is removed, the schema is not properly updated, and so it retains an imprint of the missing part. They warm up, cool off, stiffen, swell or constrict based on things like activity level, environment and age. But a prosthetic leg does not change. People who rely on them must make manual adjustments throughout the day - usually by adding or removing padding within the socket of the prosthesis. This can be a cumbersome process in public, or when wearing certain clothing. Skipping adjustments can lead to pain or limit mobility. University of Washington Professor Joan Sanders and her team are creating a new type of prosthetic leg: one that automatically adjusts its fit throughout the day. Her group, housed within the Department of Bioengineering, designs, builds and tests prosthetics for people with below-the-knee amputations - also known as trans-tibial amputations. Their latest prototype alters its fit without the need for adjustments to padding or user action. It detects in real time how well the prosthesis socket and amputation site are fitting and responds by automatically changing the size of the socket. Invention inspired by Syrian amputee swim instructor combines innovative tech and entrepreneurship. Meihuan Yu was in Grade 10 at Markville Secondary School when she came up with the idea of creating a foot-operated mouse for people with upper limb disabilities. While doing research for a history class project on how modern technology helps with warfare relief, she came across the inspirational story of Abdulvahed Naker. Naker is a Syrian amputee-swim instructor who teaches swimming at the Hutva Education Centre that is opened for amputee children affected by war in Idlib. "What really stood out to me in this story was how quickly the children with upper-limb amputations adapted to utilizing their lower limbs to swim and gain extra agility. This inspired me to come up with a crazy idea - what if a more efficient innovation, that swapped the need for dexterity for foot movement, was created for disabled students?" said Yu. "Sometimes you encounter certain events in your life where you realize that things are going to change," Baranek said. Realizing his new normal, Baranek made a shift in his plans and decided to go back to school to become a physical therapist so he could help other amputees. Unfortunately, he soon realized that he wouldn?t necessarily be working with the people he had hoped to help. "I was finding out that, you know, amputees are less than 1 percent of the population. A gel interface material in the prosthetic sleeve contains a small amount of iron, and sensors embedded in the socket wall detect the distance to the iron in the gel and send that data to the socket?s microcontroller. The microcontroller calculates whether adjustments are needed. If so, it transmits instructions to three motorized panels within the socket wall-two in the front, one in the back-and they move to make the socket smaller or larger in increments less than a millimeter at a time.
