You can even get golf ball-size scrunchies to ones the size of the 10-inch Magic 8 Ball (the giant one). But as an amputee, I can?t seem to get a hand that matches the size of the one I have left. In TMR, painful conditions may resolve when amputated nerves are reconnected to nearby nerves and eventually muscle targets. If you think about nerves as electrical wiring, TMR helps to complete the "circuit" by reconnecting the "live wire." TMR was pioneered in 2002 by Dr. Todd Kuiken and Dr. Gregory Dumanian at Northwestern University. The procedure was originally developed to help amputees control their upper limb prosthetics using natural muscle movement. Throughout their research, Drs. Kuiken and Dumanian observed an additional, unexpected benefit of TMR surgery in amputees, namely reduced neuroma and phantom limb pain.1 From wayne.renardson at comcast.net Sat Sep 10 05:49:54 2022 From: wayne.renardson at comcast.net (Wayne Renardson) Date: Mon Mar 18 14:56:45 2024 Subject: [AMP-L] Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) In-Reply-To: <631B262B.19058.831B6E4@wayne.renardson.comcast.net> References: <631B262B.19058.831B6E4@wayne.renardson.comcast.net> Message-ID: <631C87F2.28229.D97AA11@wayne.renardson.comcast.net> Corrected URL: Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) The rest of the story, with photo, here: https://tinyurl.com/2ztqat7n with a link to: Watch the 60 Minutes report about the development of prosthetic limbs that can be controlled by thought. An 18th-century operating room, discovered in London in the attic of a church, was where harbor workers with open fractures were brought in. Today it is a museum (https://oldoperatingtheatre.com). The amputation was quick and without anesthesia, but the pain was unbearable. Books of the time say that only 30% of amputees survived. Amputations have been done for millennia. The oldest was discovered in a 7,000-year-old skeleton, missing a forearm, excavated in France. The novelty is the discovery of a skeleton in Borneo, Indonesia, which had a leg amputated 31,000 years ago. The rest of the story, with photo of de bones, here: https://tinyurl.com/2lcpdq76 Wayne R. Abused as a child by his father, he left home at 15 and as soon as he was old enough, he joined the army to become a paratrooper. But in 1993, during a training exercise, he jumped from a plane and was catapulted into the ground at 75km/h. He survived, but was left in a wheelchair. In 2016, he thought his fate could be reversed when he asked celebrated surgeon Munjed Al Muderis to operate on him. The former soldier would be able to walk for the first time in decades, and fulfil his dream of escorting his daughter down the aisle.
