Duties and Responsibilitites:
Technology Assessment and Training Specialist for the Assistive Computer
Resource Center in Academic Computing and Media (ACM). Temporary, full time
with benefits, non exempt. THIS IS NOT A STATE POSITION. A FOUNDATION
APPLICATION IS REQUIRED. Duties: Under the direct supervision of the
Director of ACM, this position will have a high level of responsibility for
direct consultative support to Department of Rehabilitation clients in the
area of individualized assistive technology assessment and training either
in the University's lab or at the client's location. This is a one year
assignment through a grant from the Department of Rehabilitation.
Responsibilities include maintaining and supporting assistive technology
resources serving Department of Rehabilitation clients which include
frequent interactions with Department of Rehabilitation Counselors.
Incumbent will be responsible for creating training plans, writing user
documentation, user guides and instructor guides. Responsibilities also
include providing training and communication materials to users that
maximize their ability to use standard assistive technologies. Incumbent
will develop and/or conduct training programs, assistive technology
equipment orientations and demonstrations and tours, presentations to small
and large groups, conduct needs assessments and evaluate potential
purchases for compatibility with existing systems. Provide technical advice
and expertise in the evaluation, purchase, upgrading, and maintenance of
assistive and standard technology resources. Provide consultative and
onsite support and services to the user community in the area of access to
information resources and assistive technology software and hardware.
Research available products and systems and recommend alternatives to meet
identified needs using financial and technical justifications. Prepare
requests for proposals, cost estimates, and justifications. Develop and
recommend policies, procedures and standards regarding information resource
accessibility. Create and implement marketing plans. Participate in overall
center strategy, research and development requirements, development and
analysis of market research, and coordination of new emerging services,
managing of student workers and other duties as assigned by the Director of
ACM. Requirements: Applicants must possess the equivalent to a bachelor's
degree; preferably in special education, rehabilitation engineering, speech
therapy, or any credential that includes assistive technology. Preference
for candidates possessing one or more of the following: Assistive
Technology Practitioner (ATP) certification from RESNA or successful
completion of an Assistive Technology certificate program (e.g. CSUN or
ATACP) or the equivalent to two years of experience working directly with
people with disabilities. Desire skills to be able to recommend, train, and
support assistive software. Training skills in using standard applications
such as Microsoft Office is desired. Applicants must have knowledge of
multiple assistive software applications and equipment types including MAC
and PC such as and not limited to JAWS for Windows, Dragon Naturally
Speaking, and WYNN, as well as working knowledge and experience with the
design of assistive workstations. Applicants must have research skills to
access information resource issues on assistive products and individuals
with disabilities. Candidate must have excellent verbal and written
communication skills for detailed and comprehensive documentation; and
because of the heavy interaction with counselors and clients must be good
at building rapport with people and be self-motivated. Other preferred
skills include: teaching/training experience, an entrepreneurial attitude,
strong management and leadership skills, sound reasoning and negotiation
abilities, highly organized, dedicated to exceeding quality standards and
providing service of the highest caliber while constantly improving
services and the customer service process. Must have reliable vehicle for a
moderate amount of local travel. This is a one year assignment through a
grant from the Department of Rehabilitation. Continued employment is
dependent upon funding and job performance.

Qualifications for Position:

Personable, organized, people oriented person with an entrepreneurial
attitude is needed to market and perform assistive technology assessments
and trainings for the Dept. of Rehabilitation's clients.
