As a published author, I can attest to the fact that sometimes, just
knowing people are reading your things and learning from them (or
enjoying them in the case of fiction) is enough.  I have made no money
on my published work, but that's fine with me.  Textbook writers are
rarely making a living on their published work either; the author
receives a very very tiny piece of the pie when it comes to sales, in
the end.  That is, unless you are Stephen King, or J.K. Rowling, but
even those had to start somewhere, and did not make money on their first
editions.
