Boulder police have ticketed about a dozen people running naked on the street while sporting freshly gutted pumpkins on their heads as part of an annual Halloween event. The citations for indecent exposure Friday night came as dozens of other costumed revelers, including a man with a red cape and a sword, chanted to police officers to let go of the streakers and "find real criminals." The event known in Boulder as the Naked Pumpkin Run has been held for 10 years. This year it drew a huge crowd, prompting concern from police. Like a service dog, El-E can heed voice commands. But instead of watching a human?s gestures for visual clues to accompany each command, the robot follows a laser-pointer beam to learn what object the command refers to. The laser might point, for instance, to a door handle to be opened, or an item to be brought to the person delivering the command. Charles C. Kemp, an assistant professor biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech, is director of the Healthcare Robotics Lab, which developed the robot (the lab is a joint undertaking between Georgia Tech and Emory University). Mr. Kemp says his team studied a golden retriever named Betty for clues in creating the robot. He notes that while a robot can?t provide the companionship that a dog offers, people who need service dogs currently face ?a multi-year waiting list,? in part because the dogs require lengthy, expensive training. A video about El-E is available online. -------------------- Daniel Berkowitz Digilife Media, LLC 1 Bryant Avenue Bradford, MA 01835-7424 phone: ?978-914-4601 e-mail: dann@digilifemedia.biz web: www.digilifemedia.biz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I typically setup the external HD in RAID 1 mode (mirror-duplexing) so they are duplicated on the fly as well. Then we use the storage on the server for end of shift backup of the day's work. You can setup the external HD to sync mode but that does slow the system down a bit, instead we had our workers setup a practice of regular backups to the external during their shifts. Having been through some fairly significant hard drive crashes in my career I always like to have my data in at least two places and never want to go back more than a single step in recovering data. The other recommendation I would make is to follow file naming conventions 32 (29.3) characters in a name, 64 characters in the file path and no special characters. Let me plug my favorite internet supplier as well: newegg.com not quite as cheap as Tiger Direct, but you never want to try to RMA a bad part with Tiger :) Ron Stewart -----Original Message----- From: athen-bounces@athenpro.org [mailto:athen-bounces@athenpro.org] On Behalf Of Jean M Salzer Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2008 3:31 PM To: athen@athenpro.org Subject: Re: [Athen] Athen Digest, Vol 34, Issue 7 So Dann, Do you have the TB-sized external networked to all the computers you use ABBYY on or do you have one for each? Anyway Jean -- Digilife Media uses a centralized server (actually multiple servers) to run the production process. Our staff logs into the production server to do all tasks. This unit has dual quad cores and a hefty amount of RAM and several TB's of storage. If you want particulars on the OS and other matters you are welcome to contact me off-list. Just so you know -- Digilife does not maintain a central brick office space. All of our work is done digitally and in a virtual environment. We have not gone all '2nd lifey' yet but that is a possibility. I work out of my home in NE Massachusetts and the server is located in West Central MA. We have staff logging in from locations throughout the Commonwealth and elsewhere. If you would like to know how Digilife can help your organization set up something similar, feel free to contact me off-list (or chat with me over a beer at Accessing Higher Ground next week). Of course, you'll want to buy 2 of them to build RAID 1 and back up all the work that you are doing. What about that OCR software topic? I've only heard about ABBYY, which is what I'm currently using, but I've often wondered what I'm missing out on with Omnipage or another software package that I have yet to hear about. Is there a big difference....or any difference at all? Since I'm somewhat close to ABBYY headquarters (Fremont, CA), I have had them visit our offices to offer a little help here and there with tips/shortcuts that we didn't know about...and yes, they were pretty helpful. As for storage space, I'm sharing a networked server with our graphics team which has 1.4T of shared space between us on a RAID 1. We have it connected on a 1G line and have realized that the Finereader documents save to the server as edits are made (NICE!!)...but don't leave that document open overnight (which my students have done) cause you risk losing all the information within the file. Oh yeah, and my graphics team has learned to hate me...I take up more space than they do! Wish that I could have been at AHG with everyone... This means it's the last chance to stress-test it before widespread distribution. What's new in beta 4? Improvements were made to internationalization, accessibility, and overall reading experience; and specific requests have been implemented. There are two new notable features: (1) AMIS supports text-only books now, in addition to full-text, full-audio and audio-TOC books; and (2) there is a new piece of documentation, in DAISY format: the Keyboard Shortcuts book (found in the help menu). An important activity during the conference is the annual business meeting of ATHEN and this year was especially important. The minutes of the meeting are being deciphered and will be available on the organization website soon, but in the meantime here are a some hi-lites: 1. The revised Bylaws were approved by a unanimous vote of the quorum present. 2. The Standing Rules were also presented and met approval by the membership - these will continue to grow as the need arises. 3. Our colleague Saroj Primlani (of North Carolina State University) was honored as the second recepient of the ATHEN Lifetime Honorary Membership. 4. Accessing Higher Ground conference attandance continues to grow as does the number and quality of presentations. Be sure to check out the new Accessing Higher Ground blog . 5. ATHEN will be present in force at the ATIA conference in January of next year. 6. The latest edition of the E-Journal is well on its way to publication. 7. Because the new Bylaws were approved, a call has gone out for nominations for Officers. Contact Dan Comden for nominations as he is heading up the Election Committee. 8. Speaking of which, several committees created through the Bylaws attracted interest and I just want to thank the following members for stepping up as Chairpersons: + Elections: Dan Comden + Membership: Joe Humbert + Bylaws: Gaeir Dietrich + Publications: Teresa Haven + Professional Development: Ron Stewart Complete information about committees and other activities will be in the minutes. The Bylaws created additional?Committees that are in need of leadership. If interested in heading a committee, or if you would like to join a committee and need to get in touch with the Chairperson, contact the ATHEN Secretary Dann Berkowitz (who also happens to run this blog). -------------------- Daniel Berkowitz Digilife Media, LLC 1 Bryant Avenue Bradford, MA 01835-7424 phone: ?978-914-4601 e-mail: dann@digilifemedia.biz web: www.digilifemedia.biz -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The meeting notes are posted here: http://connect.educause.edu/blog/tft%40u.washington.edu/itaccessibilityconst ituen/47759 (or if you prefer, http://tinyurl.com/54v3s4) For those of you who aren't already involved in this group, here's the group website: http://www.educause.edu/ITAccessibilityConstituentGroup/13069 EDUCAUSE describes itself as "a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology." Its membership "comprises more than 2,200 colleges, universities, and educational organizations, including 250 corporations, with more than 17,000 active members." With numbers like these, EDUCAUSE would clearly seem to be a good channel for addressing IT accessibility in higher education. Thanks for getting involved! You may also want to mention the Thunder screenreader, the WebbIE text-only browser, and the Firevox plugin for the Firefox browser. I'm not going to be able to attend the MI-AHEAD mini-conference on Friday, but if this is when you are presenting, I'd sure like a copy of your presentation. Ron AFB Distance Learning Survey Results Now Available More and more schools, colleges and universities are using online educational tools that students are required to use to obtain course syllabi, access lectures and associated material, participate in class discussions, read course material, and receive grades and feedback from instructors. These popular tools, such as Blackboard, can frequently pose significant barriers to students with vision loss because they do not work well, if at all, with computer programs commonly used by students who are blind or visually impaired to access content displayed on the computer screen. AFB explored ways in which popular online educational tools can be made more accessible with the help of nearly 100 individuals who recently completed our online survey. The results are now available! Findings indicated the most important and necessary features of online educational tools present significant problems for those using assistive technology such as screen reading or screen magnification software. In nearly every instance, respondents indicated features that were inaccessible. To read the full report, go to www.afb.org/Section.asp?SectionID=3&TopicID=377&DocumentID=4492 . It was my very first time at AHG, and by far the best among the number of different ones I have attended in the past 5 years as far as training and general knowledge/expertise is concerned. Carl?s wife, Martha Kanter, has arranged for a memorial service on the De Anza College campus in the Flint Center at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4. Martha has asked that, rather than flowers, individuals who wish to do so make a donation to a scholarship that will be set up in Carl?s name.?Information on how to contribute should be available soon. This marks the second time this year our professional community has lost a leader and champion for serving the educational and interpersonal technology related needs of students with disabilities. Earlier this year Dick Banks of EASI [Eqwual Access to Software and Information] passed away after a brief fight with cancer. It has been said that a profession, like a country, comes into its own with the passing of its founding fathers. That may be true - or it may be bunk - but eiter way it speaks to the youth of our movement and the void that will be left by the passing of these founding fathers. The passing of Carl and Dick begets a remembrance of another icon in the field of education and disability services, that of my former boss, friend and mentor Allan Macurdy of the Boston University Office of Disability Services. Though not an icon in the access technology field (he considered computers a necessary evil of our modern age), Allan was an importnt figure in my development as a professional in many aspects of serving the needs of postsecondary students both with and without disabilities. He is sorely missed. As the poet Virgil (70 BC - 19 BC) wrote: ?Your profession is not what brings home your paycheck. Your profession is what you were put on earth to do. With such passion and such intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.? . -- Posted By Dann Berkowitz to Access Technologists Higher Education Network at 11/24/2008 09:05:00 PM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some of you who have entered the field more recently may not have had the opportunity to meet him. You missed a very subtle sense of humor, a love of practical jokes, a compassionate humanitarian, a generous friend, and an incredible visionary in the field of assistive technology. Carl Brown recognized the value of technology to assist students with disabilities nearly 30 years ago when he was a computer instructor at Monterey Peninsula College. It was through his personal vision and his tenacity, along with the assistance of his wife, Martha Kanter, that he convinced the CCC chancellor's office that the community colleges needed to support assistive technology, not just on a campuswide basis, but as a system. He convinced the system to not only provide money and equipment, but also to set up a training facility to ensure that students would get both the equipment and the trained faculty/staff that they would need in order to succeed. Carl's lasting legacy is a training facility that is the envy of the nation. Carl's wife has arranged for a memorial service here on the De Anza College campus in the Flint Center at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4. Martha has asked that, rather than flowers, individuals who wish to do so make a donation to a scholarship that will be set up in Carl's name. We will be meeting with the foundation next week to organize the scholarship, and more information on how to contribute should be available by the memorial service. In the meantime, anyone who wishes to send condolences to Carl's wife, Martha Kanter, can send them here to the HTCTU: High Tech Center Training Unit 21050 McClellan Road Cupertino, CA 93940 The HTCTU is Carl's dream and his legacy. Every person who is touched by our trainings has been indirectly touched by Carl, and his vision and influence will continue for many years to come. ****************************************************** Gaeir (rhymes with "fire") Dietrich High Tech Center Training Unit of the California Community Colleges De Anza College, Cupertino, CA www.htctu.net 408-996-6043 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately, this is not always a jolly time. Case in point is that we have a client who requested DAISY files for use with a Telex Scholar Plus. This prompted us to add one to our inventory so that we can quality control the output. However, we simply cannot get the Telex Scholar Plus to even recognize the DAISY book burned to CD let alone read it. We have tried several methods of building DTB but no avail. The player reads MP3 and Audio files just fine so we know it is not a faulty unit. I have seen these units play RFB&D files just fine but cannot get it to read the ones we produce. Anyone have suggestions? Feel free to contact me off-list. This prompted us to add one to our inventory so that we can quality control the output. It turns out that it was not an issue with either the player or the manner in which we were building the DAISY books - but rather an issue with how Microsoft Vista burns CD's. The default setting within Vista is the "Live File System" which treats every CD or DVD as a Re-Writable disc. Being new to Vista I did not realize this. Thanks to the response of George Kerscher and his information that he had not been in touch with anyone from Telex in a "long long time" - this got me thinking about the differences between older and newer models of CD players. This led me to locate Vista information (RTFM if you will) and I discovered the options available in burning CD's on Vista where older playback devices are concerned. It turns out that the Telex Scholar Plus I purchased brand new was actually manufactured in 2004 (according to the serial number tag) and the manual for this unit was last updated in 2006. Thanks to everyone who got back to me on this --- Dann -------------------- Daniel Berkowitz Digilife Media, LLC 1 Bryant Avenue Bradford, MA 01835-7424 phone: 978-914-4601 e-mail: dann@digilifemedia.biz web: www.digilifemedia.biz ----- "George Kerscher" wrote: | From: "George Kerscher" | To: "Dann Berkowitz" , "Access Technologists in Higher Education Network" | | Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 11:41:22 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern | Subject: RE: [Athen] Question about the Telex Scholar Plus | | Hi, | | I have not been in contact with anybody from Telex in a long, long | time. | There may be an upgrade available, but we have not been notified in at | least | a year or two. | | Best | George | | | -----Original Message----- | From: athen-bounces@athenpro.org [mailto:athen-bounces@athenpro.org] | On | Behalf Of Dann Berkowitz | Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 8:22 AM | To: Alternate Media; Access Technologists in Higher Education Network | Subject: [Athen] Question about the Telex Scholar Plus | | Hi All - | | Part of the fun of running Digilife is buying a variety of players | and | putting them through their paces.
