[Athen] Athen Digest, Vol 34, Issue 7

Morning all,

The second scenario has always been my preference, a single external HD on
each computer but I always use mirrored drives in the computer itself. I
typically setup the external HD in RAID 1 mode (mirror-duplexing) so they
are duplicated on the fly as well. Then we use the storage on the server
for end of shift backup of the day's work. You can setup the external HD to
sync mode but that does slow the system down a bit, instead we had our
workers setup a practice of regular backups to the external during their
shifts.

Having been through some fairly significant hard drive crashes in my career
I always like to have my data in at least two places and never want to go
back more than a single step in recovering data. The other recommendation I
would make is to follow file naming conventions 32 (29.3) characters in a
name, 64 characters in the file path and no special characters.

Let me plug my favorite internet supplier as well: newegg.com not quite as
cheap as Tiger Direct, but you never want to try to RMA a bad part with
Tiger :)

So Dann,

Do you have the TB-sized external networked to all the computers you use
ABBYY on or do you have one for each? I'm currently debating with myself on
whether or not to just get an external for each comp and only use the server
to pop a batch file to a different comp or to do a networked one...

Thanks, Jean - who got yelled at A LOT by her I.T. folks this semester
because of the enormity of server space being used.

PS - enjoy AHG everyone.
PPS - Other than the file size issues and a couple of other view quirks, I
do like the newer version of ABBYY. The initial scan and OCR is lightning
fast compared to 7.0.

ATHENians,

We are looking into purchasing new OCR software. We are currently using
ABBYY Fine Reader 7.0. I understand that there have been some issues
with file size in 9.0. Can anyone suggest or offer opinions on 9.0 or
some alternatives (Omni Page, Readeris etc.)

Thanks,

Tim Balen

Actually Tim, issues with Abbyy 9.o have quietly been cleared up by Abbyy.
Granted it is recommended that you upgrade the technology in use with the
program, but nowadays the price of a quad-core with 4 gigs of RAM and a TB
of storage is extremely reasonable. Check Tiger Direct for prices and you
will see what I mean (while you are at it pick up a 22" ACER monitor and
thank me later!).
