Most public domain Google books have a link for "plain text." Though you lose the pagination, you can get the entire text content and it is typically of pretty decent quality (the same OCR results that Google itself uses to perform selection and search capabilities). Also, you can download those books as epub, which is a full text format and can be read in iBooks or other accessible e-reader. Again, epub will lack the pagination. You can also get those books as PDF. The PDF maintains the pagination of the original but these are image-based PDF and have no text content. As Kenneth notes, doing an OCR yourself will typically not give usable results, as the page images, though generally high quality, are not as good as you would get from a high-res scanner optimized for OCR. What about reserving computers for testing in another computing facility? Does that distinction matter?" This question is complex because the absolute answer depends on your state laws. I do not know if New York has adopted any of the Section 508 Standards, and currently those Standards are the only federal ones that require captioning in all cases (and Section 508 as written applies only to the federal government). Captioning is not required under Section 504 or the ADA unless it is requested as an accommodation. The required vs. supplemental issues does matter in some states-and not in others. Again, I'm not sure about New York. The bigger overview, however, is to remember that in the case of captioning, access (making sure everything is always captioned) and accommodation (captioning upon request) work together. So, yes, you can use uncaptioned materials and caption them upon request. You just need to make sure that you are ready to caption quickly if it is required. That being said, it is good to be as proactive as you can. Prioritize captioning in classes that everyone has to take (English 1A or U.S. History, for example) and in classes that you know deaf/HOH students will be taking. Hope this helps. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Gaeir (rhymes with "fire") Dietrich High Tech Center Training Unit of the California Community Colleges De Anza College, Cupertino, CA www.htctu.net 408-996-6043 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ _____ From: athen-bounces@athenpro.org [mailto:athen-bounces@athenpro.org] On Behalf Of Sharon Trerise Sent: Tuesday, November 02, 2010 2:50 PM To: 'Access Technology Higher Education Network' Subject: [Athen] captioning for non-required course content I apologize for this duplicate request. The "read to me" feature works a lot like a tape recorder. Play and stop. One cannot read by lines or words. The menus all speak, once voice guide is enabled. Unfortunately, features like setting bookmarks can only be done at a screen-based level because of the inability to hear where exactly one is in the text. The same applies to highlighting. Type size within a book can be changed significantly. Unfortunately, the menus are only given one size. I've shown the device to several low vision and LD students and received positive feedback. My sense is that, if one can see the screen at all, the Kindle is a good tool. If you are relying solely on the spoken menus and reading feature, work still needs to be done. It does not mean that it is fully accessible or it creates perfect accessible content but I see a great potential in the program to become more accessible and create more usable/accessible content. For those of you who worked with me in the past you already know that I don't get easily excited about a few accessibility features here or there but indeed I think Softchalk is on the right path. Softchalk has approached me and I guess at least one other colleague in other institution to work with them collaboratively to improve the accessibility of their product but since we are not using their product here at UIUC I was a little hesitant to start the collaboration group. If there is enough interest and more importantly there are a few people who can commit to work on improving Softchalk I will be glad to establish the collaboration group and work with them to improve the accessibility/usability of their product. Are you personally interested to work on such collaboration group and/or do you know other colleagues who are interested to dedicate a few hours in a month for such collaboration project? You can connect a USB to a smartboard, so conceivably the info could be pulled onto a laptop, but I've never done that. We have a student this semester with very low-vision that wanted to be able to participate in a large lecture hall with the front of the classroom - especially the board for math purposes. I brought in a similar product to Onyx (http://www.enhancedvision.com/) and while the student (and her dad) liked it for up close viewing (documents on a desk, if she was very close to the board), she did not like it viewed from a normal lecture hall distance. She had to manually adjust the viewing angle to follow what was on the board and of course with such a magnified image, whenever the desk shook just a bit - the image got really wobbly. We decided not to use one of those cameras, but instead had a cheaper solution for us. She is plugging in directly to the document camera that the instructor uses and using her mac to zoom in/out as she wants. This seems to be working well for her and I've heard no issues so far. Of course we have already put document cameras in most classroom - so this will be an expensive option if profs still use chalkboards. It seems that a smartboard should work similarly. We also thought about the CCTV option and brought it up with her. She really wanted to draw as little attention to herself as possible - so having a big monitor wasn't the way to go - but if someone is open to it - seems like a good solution to me. We would have purchased the Enhanced Vision product and loaned it out to her for classroom use as we do with other tech like ALDs, but if she would have wanted one for other use she would have had to purchase it. Hope this helps! One of the great problems we see in alternative media is knowing where a book is or who might have produced it. This federated search experiment attempts to address that problem. A federated search is a single point to search across multiple holdings of title. To this end I have an experimental z39.50 proxy server running which will search the following sources: Association for the Blind of Western Australia braille and talking book library Vision Australia braille and talking book library National Library Service (USA) which hold their own records and those of RFB&D as well. There is a webpage where you can try this out at http://www.guidedogswa.org/tmp/yaz.php While the web interface works it is slow. I would recommend that you use a true z39.50 client and direct it to the following: Server: www.guidedogswa.org Port: 9000 Database: all You can also direct your searches to just one of the services by changing the database: Association for the Blind of Western Australia: Database: ab Vision Australia: Database: va National LIbrary Service: Database: nls And these libraries which are not part of the "all" database Libraries Australia: Database la Library of Congress (USA): database: lc Please understand that at this point this is a very experimental system prone to breaking down or going off line without any warning. Thanks for any comments if you have or know of other libraries holding collections of alternative media with z39.50 server running I would like to be able to add those servers to the system. I can also convert collections of books in spreadsheet form to work in this system as well. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me. It is very far from a done deal. Most of the impetus here is toward a more mainstream product, such as Adobe Connect or Elluminate/Bb Collaborate. I know from experience about the accessibility of TC Conference. So I think it would be great if we could support it here and pay for it centrally. However, that is just my wish. We very well might end up with just a single system, and my sense is that it is unlikely if that is the case that TC Conference would get enough support to be the one chosen. One idea we might explore, however, is supporting more than one system and "tiering" them--different conferencing systems depending upon the instructor's current needs for features, or something like that. This is all just talk between a very few people, at this point. No decisions have been made, nor any lengthy discussions, even. Just ideas, possibilities to explore. In any case, what I would really like to know is if any universities are supporting and paying for TC Conference centrally and/or whether they are heavy users of TC Conference. Any contact information for IT staff within universities that support TC Conference would be very helpful for us. As a result, we are looking for an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that would be accessible to blind persons. We've done some research, but haven't found a Linden Scripting Language IDE that accepts keyboard-only input and can be used with screen readers. Does one even exist? Message-ID: This answer is going to disappoint you, but I don't think any of the people working on Second Life for blind people have got as far as scripting. And I think the biggest problem you are going to face is that in general viewers designed for blind people do not provide exactly the same information or in the same ways that viewers for the sighted do, so blind students may not understand the result of their scripting in the same way. I am not going to tell you this isn't possible, but I will tell you that it will be a substantial accommodation. Here is a list of IDEs for SL, you could also check if some of them are accessible: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Alternate_Editors Keep in mind that you'll need an accessible Second Life client, too, for the blind person to effectively understand the results of their scripting, move around in world, talk to other students, etc. Accessible viewers include the Virtual GuideDog + MaxVoice Plus (a scripted wearable object + a screenreader that plugs into the main viewer), Radegast (a text-based viewer that is also very accessible), and IBM's Kestrel. An accessible registration portal is at virtualability.org - my freelance team built that and could build a custom one for you. Your best bet might be to ask Latif Khalifa, the developer of Radegast, or Charles Morris, the developer of the Virtual GuideDog, if an accessible IDE might be work-for-hire one of them is interested in doing. My friend Meadhbh Hamrick might also be interested in doing it. Please feel free to shoot Second Life questions my way; I also do paid consulting around Second Life & educational accessibility and have colleagues who do other kinds of Second Life work if you're interested in retaining someone's services. For the many users who are still using XP, the Intellimouse mouse driver from Microsoft provides access to a free lens magnifier that can be set up to be toggled on/off using the scroll wheel button, which makes it super quick and convenient. This can be helpful for users who need a backup in case their main magnification software crashes or doesn't load or for users who only need occasional spot magnification. Often people/offices have an old Microsoft USB mouse with a scroll wheel sitting in the closet from a previous computer that can be used to make this solution a free one. Once the driver is installed you just assign the Magnify feature to the scroll wheel button (pressing the scroll wheel in, which most people aren't using for something else). But, it is important to note that that option will only be there when you have a mouse plugged in that the software recognizes as a Microsoft mouse. Intellimouse can be downloaded here. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=mk The tricky party is how you resize the lens or change the magnification. You have to hold down the scroll wheel button and then move the mouse or roll the scroll wheel at the same time, which takes s little getting used to. Windows 7 has a lens magnifier built in so it removes the requirement to have a Microsoft branded mouse. This opening presents a unique opportunity for leadership, vision, and research with a dedicated group of faculty on behalf of bright college students with diagnosed learning disabilities. We anticipate that the Director will hold a faculty appointment at the Full Professor level. Start date: Summer 2011 (preferred) or Fall 2011. Responsibilities include: academic department leadership; working with Admission and Enrollment Management departments on recruitment and retention of students in the program; educating both college and external constituencies about the program; conducting research to evaluate program effectiveness; and managing program operations. The position also carries minimal teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will have strong communication and collaboration skills for work with faculty, students, and parents. We require a Ph.D./Ed.D., in a relevant discipline, with a teaching and scholarly publication record in the field consistent with faculty appointment at the Professor level. Familiarity with current neuro/cognitive research as it relates to learning and teaching is desired. Experience should include a record of successful postsecondary LD program administration; work with both traditional and non-traditional college students with learning differences; experience working with faculty from diverse disciplines regarding accommodations and curriculum modifications; familiarity with technology applications and assistive technology; strong curriculum development and assessment skills. We seek a student-centered leader with creativity and outstanding team-building skills. Deadline for applications is January 14, 2011. I thought I hadn't seen that before, however, if the question refers to the Order Panel rather than the Tags Tree, it is common for Acrobat 9 and X. I think it is part of the same issue in putting all of the images or
Tags at the top of the Tags tree. I just tagged and repaired my Logical Document Structure Handbook: PowerPoint 2007 and in the Order Panel, EVRY image on EVERY page was at the bottom of the page in the Order Panel. At the same time, all of the images in the document were at the top of the Tags Tree in the Tags Panel. The book was created in Word. So, am going to log this with Adobe and see if we can't get both issues fixed. Thanks for the question! Cheers, Karen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This book details the decision making process that starts your design process for your presentation. The accessibility of your PowerPoint documents depends on how you are going to distribute them. The chapters in this book provide information on what elements of a slide can be accessible and how someone using adaptive technology can access tables, Excel or Word documents, shapes or SmartArt. You'll learn how to make accessible slide masters.which is not as difficult as you might think. You can purchase the book from Karlen Communications by invoice or PO. I'll also be on the lookout for issues that might affect Higher ed. One of the areas that I've already considered as an issue for us to look at is related to content aggregators--i.e., commercial services which themselves can be covered under the promulgated regs but the content may not be. The DOJ specifically asks for comment on this issue. I know of several schools who are using Facebook to run asynchronous courses. Facebooks groups are being used by several institutions to deliver content such as videos and reading material. We need some discussion surrounding this issue. I'll write more as I discover items like these. There were piles of demo discs at AHG, some of which I used on the conference lab machines. But there is no download link on their site. This is a strange approach in this day and age, in my opinion. Pretty much all the other vendors offer downloadable demo versions of their software. I recommend that you install this on a test computer -- one that you don't rely on for daily work. We had some very odd problems with Read & Write -- more than just about any other program. It's a shame, because I think once it's working properly, it's a fairly decent application. But like many other apps that use TTS, it seems to assume it's the only program that will be installing SAPI voices and can cause some conflicts that may be difficult to fix. I sure wish the vendors who implement TTS software would come up with a solution to this perennial headache. -*- Dan On Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 8:28 AM, Prof Norm Coombs wrote: > I have been going round in circles looking for a trial version of Read&Write From easi.easi at gmail.com Tue Nov 30 11:24:03 2010 From: easi.easi at gmail.com (Prof Norm Coombs) Date: Sat Jun 9 18:30:12 2018 Subject: [Athen] Read&Write Gold In-Reply-To: References: <6.0.3.0.2.20101130082520.045672a8@pop.gmail.com> Message-ID: <6.0.3.0.2.20101130112348.050e20d8@pop.gmail.com> Thanks, Dan. Does anyone have any experience with the Hawkes Learning System for math courses? We have a couple of blind students taking College Algebra next semester. Our Math department uses Hawkes for college algebra. I called the vendor and they said that the software is not fully accessible. Can anyone comment on the accessibility (or lack of accessibility) for Hawkes Learning System, along with any hints for making this work?
