Yes, this would explain the "difference in versions" theory.
Cheers, Karen.

In my experience, this happens when slides are copying from another
PowerPoint presentation into the current one. For some reason, the slides
that are copied are not seen by the program and are not included in the
outline view.

Subject: [Athen] PowerPoint slides question
Aloha, all. I have an odd question that I hope someone can help with. I'm
regularly asked to review various professors' Blackboard sites for the
accessibility of their course content. I've recently started to see
Powerpoint slide shows where some slides have all the text accessible, some
slides have only part of the text accessible and part not, and some slides
are completely inaccessible (blank in Outline view). In almost every case,
the prof will have been using the same basic template for every slide, and
producing very "clean" slides -- just a title at the top and three or four
bullet points of text. Some profs are using Office 2007 and a few may still
be using Office 2003. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this
erratic accessibility issue, and more importantly, suggestions on how to
resolve it? I'm trying very hard to coach faculty to produce accessible
materials in the first place, and they're trying to comply, but this problem
is growing and retrofitting by re-typing the slide content into Word docs
and distributing to students is not a reasonable solution at this time.
Many thanks for any ideas you might be able to share,
Teresa

Subject: [Athen] Repost: Question on alt media procedure
In-Reply-To:
References:
Message-ID:
Gaier,
Our process is very similar to what John described.
?Who makes the initial referral? Counselor/Assistive Technology Specialist
?Is it collaborative effort?
The initial referral is made by whomever talks with the student at the
registration meeting - usually one of the Accommodation Counselors. But it
could also be the director or assistant director.
?Who authorizes the final accommodation for e-text etc.?
After the registration meeting, the student and I meet to discuss specific
issues the student struggles with when attempting to access print, various
formats, as well as aspects which John describe ("nature of the disability,
whether or not the student has a computer - and is it Mac or PC, etc.") I
make the final determination based on the student's registration meeting
notes, the AT meeting, as well as disability documentation information.
?Are students required to show competency in using computer assistive
technology such Text-to-Speech?
No. Use of technology (software such as how to use DAISY) is demonstrated
during our AT meeting, and the lab manger as well as myself are available to
help a student should they have any difficulty once they receive their alt
media (and software or hardware).
?Is the process the same for each student or does it vary?
"The general process is the same. The nature of the accommodation varies."
Any information you can provided regarding the approval process for alt
media (i.e. e-text, audio, etc.) would be greatly appreciated!
"The approval process is for the general accommodation. The specific
accommodation is worked out with the student." During the AT meeting, I
demonstrate DAISY (AMIS), TextAloud, and other software as might be
necessary. This allows the student to have a better understanding of what
is available and to see how he/she might utilize a specific format.

You can find out if the Bluetooth the client has is compatible or on the
list recommended by Nuance. You can have him try it out with ANY Dragon 11
available as a practice run to see if it will work. Nuance will let you
purchase and return within 30 days for refund if necessary. Try it before
you buy it!!

Hi Howard
I don't much use Blue Tooth but I do use some hands free mics. I like the
Andrea Soundmax Superbeam (www.andreaelectronis.com
) . It is like a desktop mic but it is
small enough to rest on a laptop lid or an LCD monitor. They have different
versions and I use the bundle with the USB external audio card in my office
with very good results. They aren't the solution for all hands free
situations but check them out and see if they would work for your client.

I'm working with a private client who has limited use of his hands. I'm
working on setting him up with naturallyspeaking 11. He already uses a
bluetooth headset for his phone. Does anyone have recommendations for what
equipment would be needed on the computer end to receive the voice input
from the bluetooth. I know you can purchase a wireless system with a mic
from Nuance but what do you do if you already have a microphone.
Thanks in advance,
Howard

Howard, please make sure any response to this question is available to all.
I have a Plantronic wireless headset that I purchased with Dragon 11 and
POOH! It is too large for my ear and I would love an alternative way to
incorporate my icon blue tooth, if available.
Thank you

Wink,
What do you do if you already have a bluetooth compatible mic. Do you still
have to buy the wireless version of Dragon to receive the signal?

You do not have to buy the wireless version. That version includes the
headset. I would suggest using a 2.4 GHz wireless headset over a
bluetooth. you can get a logitech one for less then $100 dollars.

Good morning all, I hope your all doing well and looking forward to seeing
many of you at AHG in a few weeks.
It is time once again to think about the ATHEN elections. With the changes
to our bylaws last year we are seeking nominations from current ATHEN
members for the positions of Vice President and Treasurer for a two year
term of office. Secondly I am collecting Agenda items for this year's
Business meeting at the AHG conference. The Business meeting will be on Wed
Nov 16th from 6:30 pm to approximately 8:00 with the location to be
determined.
Thanks for your attention to these two important items

To Saroj & Howard et al on Higher Ground,
Could we have them send the materials out ahead of time + send a PPT of the presentation? Could we set up a speaker phone for them to participate by voice while we (collectively) run the "show"? Run it through a "go to meeting" site, or have them send an outline or a recording of their presentation? If the issue is cost and the group can't afford to come, we could do the next best thing and have them be able to field questions "live" either by speaker phone or a video chat.
A few thoughts to save the presentation...

Subject: [Athen] Feds Give $1.1-Million for E-Textbooks for
Vision-Impaired Students
Message-ID: <4CB81C98.1869.00F8.0@sbcc.edu>
October 14, 2010, 6:07 pm
By Travis Kaya
A pilot program to improve access to e-textbooks for students with
disabilities that make it hard for them to read print got a $1.1-million
grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the program announced
today.
The Student E-rent Pilot Project, or STEPP, a public-private
partnership, will digitally format and distribute digital versions of
textbooks for use by students with disabilities like blindness and
dyslexia. Presently, most of these students have to rely on limited
college resources to access these books, but in this program, books will
be electronically reformatted so that they can be read out loud by
computers or e-book readers in a way that makes sense to students. The
grant will help the project add 1,000 books, including 80 percent of the
best-selling textbooks on college campuses.
The partnership is being co-sponsored by digital textbook provider
CourseSmart along with the Alternative Media Access Center of the
University System of Georgia, and the AccessText Network, a nonprofit
organization working with disabled student-services offices on campuses
across the country.
Typically, college students who have trouble with standard book formats
could only turn to their disabled student-services offices to have
textbooks translated into braille or scanned with rudimentary
text-to-speech computer software. *That process is time consuming and
costly,* said access center director Christopher Lee. *The staff
basically have to be publishers.*
With more advanced technology, CourseSmart*a joint venture supported
by several major textbook publishers*and other developers are
digitally reformatting hundreds of books that can be rented online at a
much lower cost to the students and the institutions. Tom Hadfield,
chief technology officer for CourseSmart, estimates that renting
e-textbooks will save students up to 50 percent on their course
material. *Rental is a big movement in the higher-ed course-material
fields,* but without STEPP*s reformatting efforts, *renting
textbooks excludes people with textual disabilities,* he said.

I have an iPad to play with for a few weeks. I've been ignoring most of
the iPad discussions because I didn't have one to use. So now, I want
to try some things. What should I be looking at for apps, keeping
accessibility needs in mind?
Thanks in advance...

Good afternoon!
1. Does anyone have thoughts concerning the advisability of purchasing the "Enhanced Support Plan" one can get with Zoom Text Magnifier Reader?
2. Does anyone know whether rumors that Kurzweil 3000 will soon no longer support the Mac OS hold any validity?
3. What, if anything, are DS offices doing concerning insuring equipment purchased either for students to borrow or to keep in an AT lab?
Thank you!

Hi Dave,
1.) We have just purchased the ESP for Zoomtext Mag/Reader. We did so because we wanted to be able to stay current on the software and we are not sure what our tech funding will be like in the next couple of years. If you have the cash, get it.
2.) Sorry, don't have any info on Kurzweil and Mac.
3.) Not sure what you are asking on this question, do you mean how are we ensuring that we get the equipment back or are you talking about actually purchasing insurance on the equipment that is borrowed?
Hope that helps!

Hello all,
Just a note about Access U West - a Web accessibility conference that
will be happening in January in San Jose, CA. It is a great conference
and there are some excellent speakers who will be talking about emerging
accessibility issues for the Web. More details available below!
Take care,
Sean
********
Web accessibility - you know you need it, now you can get it in one, two
or three days of classes in sunny California in January. In October, the
21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act became law.
Learn what that means to you and how you can most effectively implement
web accessibility.
AccessU West is the premier web accessibility training conference:
Date: January 10-12, 2011
Website: http://www.knowbility.org/accessu-west/
Learn from world renowned accessibility experts to improve your design
skills and to understand the both the need and the techniques for
inclusive IT design. From the basics to the bleeding edge, AccessU will
provide the resources you need.
AccessU offers three tracks to meet your needs:
Make it Accessible ? The Design/Development Track for people creating
content, software, web sites and multimedia. All the how-to knowledge
you need to be sure that people with disabilities can use what you
create to make accessibility part of your design strategy.
Make it Usable ? The Usability Track for people creating or evaluating
technology. Learn how to make sure that your websites and software are
usable by everyone, including people with disabilities.
Set the Direction ? The Policy and Administration Track for
administrators, managers and policy makers. Know the laws, and learn how
to set up a program that works for your company and your team.
This is a tremendous professional development opportunity for
individuals, as well as a way for companies and organizations to
demonstrate to their customers that they are committed to usability and
accessibility!
You can choose from one, two or three days of workshops:

Space is limited! A group rate is available with the registration of six
or more people from the same organization/association. Contact

While not an university, HHS has done some work on accessible documents.
They have some test guidelines and checklists for what they view as meeting
Section 508.
Perhaps you can use them as a starting point.

Hi All,
I'm incumbent Vice President of ATHEN, but I do not intend to seek another two-year term. I plan to continue being active in ATHEN, but I'm also serving as chair of the EDUCAUSE IT Accessibility Constituent Group, which now has roughly 200 members and a long list of action items following its annual meeting at last week's EDUCAUSE conference. This means two things: (a) I'm too busy to perform both functions well, and (b) the diversity of our field can be better represented if there's diversity in its leadership.
So, as you read this, if you have an interest in joining a fun and competent officer team in leading ATHEN to realize its goals, please consider serving as Vice President.
The duties of Vice President are defined in the by-laws (http://athenpro.org/node/23) as follows:
5.3.2. The Vice President shall assume the duties of the President in his or her absence and shall have such powers and duties as prescribed by the President. The Vice President shall work with the Program Committee.
And the duties of the Program Committee are defined as follows:
7.2.3. The Program Committee will prepare and recommend to the Executive Council a program of activities for the coming year to include dates and places for these activities. It will serve as the organizing committee for the annual meeting.
It's been a pleasure serving as your VP.
Thanks,

Good morning all, I hope your all doing well and looking forward to seeing many of you at AHG in a few weeks.
It is time once again to think about the ATHEN elections. With the changes to our bylaws last year we are seeking nominations from current ATHEN members for the positions of Vice President and Treasurer for a two year term of office. Secondly I am collecting Agenda items for this year's Business meeting at the AHG conference. The Business meeting will be on Wed Nov 16th from 6:30 pm to approximately 8:00 with the location to be determined.
Thanks for your attention to these two important items

This is a NYT article on the new version of Office for Mac.
http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/21/office-for-mac-isnt-an-improvement
/
Although the author states it is a personal evaluation, after reading
through it I thought that some of the tools he uses would be ones those of
us using adaptive technology might use so thought the article might be
useful.
In terms of accessibility , Outlook has some VoiceOver support but only when
I hover the mouse over some of the information and I can't get it to
consistently read either the list of messages or lines in a message. The
other applications are still not accessible using VoiceOver but there are
keyboard commands for performing tasks.
Cheers, Karen

Morning Melanie,
Here is a pretty concise discussion on this very topic on the AHEAD list
just this last week.
Ron Stewart
Math ML is fine as long as a programmer knows what is he or she doing?
My school had web conference with Pearson team (programmers, legal team,
director, sales etc..)yesterday
Here is what they said :
Pearson is committed to accessibility.
Its Adobe Flash?s Fault!..
Here is what We have found out talking to them.
- Their Development side has many faults using flash wrongly ,
programmers do not have any idea regarding the smart use of typesetting
language embedded to Math ML.
- They should avoid using excessive Flash and fixed font size etc..
- Programmers do not have a screen reader to test their product.!
- They do not have an reasonable answer on why would you create my
composition lab/myspanish lab with full of dynamic content Flash! In rich
view, Where this could be totally accessible.
- On citrix go to meeting their screen showed algebra mymathlab
/homework where it was created entirely with flash, where we created the
same content 100% accessible to demo to our faculty?
To my opinion/conclusion , most of their my lab series can be provided
accessible excluding some math! It?s matter of choise its not depending on
Adobe Flash or somebody else.
Another lame excuse came from their Legal department that Pearson talked to
you guys last week and talked with National federation of the blind that you
and the federation understands that its not Pearson Fault but rather the
technology?
Which is not true.
Conclusion: if a company like Pearson prepares an accessibility statement on
their web site and shows a video regarding the accessibility and if this
video doesn?t have CLOSE caption it does tell me how their committed to the
accessibility!.
My school legal counselor and EEO have told our faculty that Pearson CanNOT
sell their products unless its Accessible to All.
Looking forward to talk more in Boulder if anyone has questions.
Thanks.
Selim ?zi.
Good morning Ron and All,
I would like to share my two cents regarding Ron?s report on Pearson meeting
and its products accessibility.
At first, to eliminate confusion when I talk accessibility I mean keyboard
/screen reader accessibility with W3,WAI 2.0 recommendations.
At my school I typically provide 300/400 books per semester, in accessible
format in structured word , Daisy, OCR-tagged PDF?s, tagged HTML?s and in
Braille.
As well as using scientific notebook, LATEX embedded structured accessible
books for MATH and Computer Science.
It seems like my school has an Enterprise Agreement with Pearson!, Currently
I am auditing my math lab, myeconlab, myspanishlab, mysciencelab etc..
I have audited them all using Jaws 11.0746, with firefox and I.E.
Here some of the findings on mymath lab.
mymathlab Audit
Overview: Upon entering the Course Compass using JAWS version 11, the site?s
home page is fairly accessible and uses helpful hotkeys, headings and ?skip
navigation? links. The challenges arise after drilling down to the plug-in
that allows the student to complete homework assignments. The problem with
this module is that it is written entirely with Adobe Flash. One general
issue that has occurred, when accessing this site , is that JAWS will lose
focus with the flash player and simply state: ?Open Parent Document Button.?
The only way to correct this problem is to navigate focus away from the
browser window. This usually solves the problem..
Some other functionality issues, as described in further detail below, have
to do with the way in which a screen reader user navigates each problem.
Typical form control elements such as: edit boxes, check boxes, and Radio
Buttons are not always recognized by the screen reader. Furthermore, the
state of these elements is not noted. For example, after checking a Radio
Button with the spacebar, JAWS is not always able to differentiate whether
the object is marked or unmarked.. Another recurring issue is that many of
the graphics used to represent buttons, are not always labeled. They are not
recognized as graphics, or any element. This issue was especially
problematic when trying to navigate a set of instructions, and JAWS would
say something to the effect of, ?
and then press the ?blank? button.? Having
these graphics correctly labeled will be critical in understanding the
procedures that are being described. Listed below, is a detailed description
of the navigational and functional problems encountered when using a screen
reader.
HW1
Question 1
? Graphic of the Continue button is not recognized or labeled
? Graphical help button is not recognized or labeled
? Graphical Check Answer button is not recognized or labeled
? The edit box for typing the answer is not recognized or labeled
? The graphic of Animation button not recognized or labeled
? The graphic of the Help Me Solve This not recognized or labeled
Question 2
? Radio Buttons not recognized or tagged
? Icons of faces not labeled or tagged
? Save button does not trigger
? ?Check Answer? pop-up windows are not accessible
Question 3
? Check boxes are not labeled as check boxes
? When check box is triggered, JAWS loses focus and speaks ?Open
parent document button? (Firefox must leave focus and come back for JAWS to
work again)
? Any action on the page causes JAWS to lose the Flash application
? Save button does not trigger
Summary: Due to the fact that the issues are a recurring pattern, the
above-mentioned is simply a sampling of the challenges faced. The easiest
way to solve all of the above-mentioned issues can be alleviated by
eliminating the Flash module (except when it is absolutely necessary for
animation.) Most of the controls can be reproduced and easily be made
accessible to screen readers. When working with mathematical expressions,
style and accessibility can be accomplished by using the type-setting
language known as LaTex. This will allow the screen reader user to access
mathematical expressions in a linear way, while at the same time making the
expressions look visually appealing to the sighted.
I can easily say that by Auditing most of the my lab products that their
accessibility commitment is weak.!
I can understand that for Linear algebra or Calculus 3 lab work there are
challenges with current technology!
But building up a my spanish lab/literature/writing lab with entire flash
content, without tagged/labeled graphics is not acceptable.
To add an positive comment they have very dedicated accessibility team to
respond and they are willing to help ?
I would love to talk to you all in boulder in November and findout what
others doing in their school?s.
Selim ?zi.
Good morning,
In my voluntary role as the Chair of AHEAD's IMAG effort I had the pleasure
of attending an internal Pearson conference on accessibility and innovation
a few weeks ago. I am going to share, with fairly broad strokes, some of
what was presented and discussed by the staff of Pearson as well as various
industry and accessibility experts at the event. As one of only a handful
of invited quests I want to express my thanks to Pearson for the opportunity
to get a much better understanding of the complexities of the accessibility
challenges that they face with their very widely adopted MyLab and related
products.
As I understand it there are at least two different underlying systems for
the MyLab products, one for soft subjects (Literature, Writing...) and
another for hard subjects (Math, Econ, and Stats). At this point they have a
long way to go before I am willing to consider their products fully
accessible but clearly they have done a very good job of identifying where
the challenges are. They have also developed collaborative strategies for
tackling them. To give you some of an idea of what they are up against; my
understanding is that MyMathLab and its related products draw from a
learning object database of over 700,000+ items. Some are accessible, but
many are not. In dealing with these challenge some of the approaches they
are taking have promise but others will probably result in an accessible
solution but not an equivalent one for some users of assistive technology.
This is not a situation that is unique to Pearson. It is very common to
retrofit for accessibility based on adding complex and cumbersome steps to a
product interface for users of AT. The only way to truly insure both
accessibility and equivalent usability are to design them in from the
outset, and that is not an option with the current versions of these
products.
MyStatsLab and related Pearson related MyLab products are all based on the
same underlying technologies so are going to present a variety of
accessibility challenges for users of assistive technology. As I understand
it there are three types of content that the user will have accessibility
issues within the MyLab environment:
-HTML which for the most part should be accessible according to Pearson
though I am not sure about the quality of the descriptive text that is
associated with the image and graphical content.
-Pearson's proprietary eText which as I understand is not currently
accessible.
-FLASH where almost all of the accessibility is related to the way in which
the FLASH was constructed and is presented.
Further, Pearson has had a JAWS script for the use of that particular screen
reader with their MyLab products. The functional usability of that is not
something I can speak to because I don't do use JAWS in my evaluation work
for my clients. Unfortunately the link to that site appears to have been
taken down in the last few weeks. I would suggest contacting the support
group for the particular MyLab products you are using to get an update on
this. There have also been some resent changes made to the presentation
environment some of the MyLab products use that will increase the ease of
use as far as the learning interface goes.
I hope this provides some further insight into this very problematic
situation.

If there are single candidates for the two positions, there is already a

the human condition and the environment seen through the lenses of art,
law, societal and individual experience. Multiple Perspectives reaches
across typical divisions between disciplines and communities focusing on
the intersection of disability with education & employment; scholarship
& service; business & government; religion, race, gender & ethnicity.
Past programs and conference updates as they become
available can be found at: http://ada.osu.edu/conferences.htm.
To be on the mailing list for the conference, send
e-mail to ADA-OSU@osu.edu
Presentations should provide an opportunity for
participants to step back from the daily demands of access and reflect
on tools and strategies needed to transform a commitment to justice and
excellence into that future.
