That was fine, however now both Narrator and Magnifier both always load at the login screen.? This makes the login screen hard for some to see because it is so large.? It appears to require the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.2 or higher. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zoomreader/id414117816?mt=8 There are two one-star ratings, but it is apparent one person clearly did not read the directions and tried installing the app on an iPhone 3GS and another person was just negative (no real description as to any problems). Such an app could be really useful on a form factor the size on an iPad. Unfortunately, the iPad 2 camera is of much lower capability than the iPhone 4, so until the iPad 2 camera gets a serious upgrade, it looks like this will only be useful for the iPhone 4 device. If anyone gets the chance to play with this, I would be interested to hear your comments. It did not do well on scanning and recognizing the instructions on over the counter medicine boxes although the instructions do say that you need to hold the camera steady and of course since I was concentrating on holding the camera steady it wobbled so I am going back from time to time to try it again but as of now, four days later, no luck. The other issue might be that the text on the packaging is often red on white or blue on white and is quite small. They are right about glare and lighting and in a restaurant, despite being under a light I couldn't get any information from the menu. To be fair, again the menu had a plastic coating and in this case the fonts are not plain although they were not script. I think this is a good tool and this is the first iteration of it which I accept. I'm trying it with anything I can think of to see what it likes and what it doesn't. Am also experimenting to see how steady I can hold the camera. I don't have a mobility disability or tremors so it is just a matter of holding the camera steady at the right distance from the content. Like any new tool, it takes some getting used to. The text recognition on the iTunes card instructions came out quite well with only a few OCR mistakes and again I found that steadiness and distance from the text affected the OCR. I like that I can change the contrast for reading and there is a setting to automatically read the content once it is recognized but I like to choose when to read the text so haven't used this setting yet. So, for a first iteration of a tool it works well if you can hold the camera steady at the right distance from the text. I wouldn't give it a negative rating. Once more of us are using it, we can provide some feedback on performance but I like the idea of not carrying around a separate device to do this. It is just so easy to use on-board. We started with the Kurzweil 3000 server about 4 years ago. The JAWS and ZoomText servers were added about 2 years ago. Read and Write Gold is a recent purchase so we got its server up just last fall. The Kurzweil 3000 server seems to have the most features. There are a few methods for loaning out the software, including loans that do not require internet access. I like that the Kurzweil server keeps some basic statistics on usage. This really helps when justifying purchases. The largest down-side for us has been the upgrade path. The Kurzweil 3000 server only works with a single version of Kurzweil 3000. When we upgrade the server we also have to upgrade all of the clients at the same time. This requires some planning on our part. We have not had much trouble with the JAWS server. There have been a few places where firewalls have prevented access to the correct ports for connecting to the server. JAWS can also be a bit tricky to use on a machine with wireless on our campus. The process usually involves running JAWS in demo mode to log in to the wireless network. Then the user needs to shut JAWS down and restart it. The second time JAWS can find the server. I also wish there were a simple way to use one of the JAWS license for a period of time without connecting to the server. The JAWS server cannot be easily used when off-campus. I end up using NVDA at conferences etc. The ZoomText server is somewhat challenging to use. The client must be installed directly from the server. There is only one client version and I have always had some difficulty getting a particular build that is stable on all of the stations where ZoomText is needed. The server must be linked as an active drive each time ZoomText is run. Sometimes I have had to reconnect the drive before ZoomText finds it. There is also no easy way to run ZoomText without an internet connection. Read and Write Gold runs directly from the server. Nothing needs to be installed on the user's machine. So far, we have not had a lot of usage. I am not sure how the server will work with many concurrent users. I almost forgot, we also have Kurzweil 3000 for the Macintosh as a network version. This has also worked well for us. There does not seem to be a way to loan the software without requiring an internet connection each time the software is launched. I do not know a lot of the nuts and bolts for the server installations. The servers are all installed on a common IT license server. Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh essentially has its own server since it has to run on a Macintosh. Apparently, most server software runs on a Windows box at this point. I'm seeking suggestions on technology that's rather out of my field because of the age of the user involved. A student at my university approached me this week asking for suggestions on purchasing a laptop for his little brother, age 11. The younger brother experienced near-drowning at the age of 15 months and has resulting difficulties with vision and motor control due to anoxic brain injury and epileptic activity. Also significantly, he lives in Syria, not the US, although reportedly he can work well in English despite it being his second language. Reportedly he learns well by listening and has already had limited exposure to computers, so the older brother was interested in something that would provide screen reading/speech output and screen magnification. My first thought was a Mac of some sort, since they have screen readers, TTS utilities, and screen magnifiers built-in, but I think the older brother is hoping for something designed even more specifically for a child with a disability. Does anyone have other suggestions they can make? Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2011 1:37 PM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: Re: [Athen] Networking of Assistive Technology At Purdue we have had networked versions of JAWS; ZoomText; Read & Write Gold; and Kurzweil 3000 for a while now. Nothing needs to be installed on the user*s machine. So far, we have not had a lot of usage. I am not sure how the server will work with many con current users. Why not consider NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access)? I've been teaching screenreaders, including JAWS and Window-Eyes, for several years. Now, I mainly recommend and teach NVDA to my clients who are blind, unless there is some unusual preference requirement or they are used to a commercial setup. NVDA is free, donationware, and portable (can run from a USB flash drive on any Windows machine without administrator authorization, so good for a campus [e.g. you don't even have to add it to the computers]). WebAIM recently conducted a screenreader survey showing that, while JAWS is still popular, NVDA is used more often than Window Eyes and growing the fastest in use as a primary screenreader. I believe free is much more feasible! :) Chris Johnson, Assistive Technology Specialist, eABLE Loveland, CO On 4/13/11 8:58 AM, Dianne Moore wrote: > > I am currently looking at adding Window Eyes to our campus. I would like to underscore that this is an ongoing project, and some of the testing is still in progress and/or under investigation. We welcome your feedback on this project. We are considering expanding this kind of accessibility/usability evaluation to other products, such as library resources, communication systems, e-mail systems, etc. If you find such projects helpful, it would be great if you could also help us in these efforts. Please drop me a note if you are interested in helping enhance the criteria, performing accessibility/usability testing for any of these LMS. Here is the link to the paper.
