If you are using the Chrome web browser, then you get the best screen-reader interaction by using ChromeVox, a screen-reader add-on for the Chrome web browser. ChromeVox does a decent job on most web pages and, in particular, on Google-based pages (Google Docs, etc.). You can install ChromeVox from the following page: http://code.google.com/p/google-axs-chrome/ Google has also set up a tutorial for learning how to use ChromeVox to interact with Web pages. ChromeVox is different from Windows-based screen-readers. If anything, it is more closely related to how VoiceOver works on a Mac. The tutorial does a good job at covering how to use ChromeVox: http://google-axs-chrome.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/chromevox_tutorial/index.html Take care, sean -- Sean Keegan Associate Director, Assistive Technology Office of Accessible Education - Stanford University http://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/oae On 10/7/11 7:57 AM, Prof Norm Coombs wrote: > Do anyone of you have experience or know someone with experience using > google chrome with a screen reader? specifically with JAWS? > Norm > > . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . > It's never too late to become what you might have been. The Board approved this motion to facilitate collecting cost information and promote harmonization with standards efforts in Europe. Unfortunately, our work was not completed when we expected. However, work will be completed before the Board*s next meeting in November. Therefore, the staff will be asking the Board to approve the next version of the ICT rulemaking on November 9. The next version will be an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking; a public comment period will be provided on the ANPRM. This ANPRM will make changes in content and structure from the first ANPRM that was issued in March 2010. If the ANPRM is approved by the Board on November 9, we expect that it will be published in the Federal Register and made available on our website and Regulations.gov in early December. There was no admission of any wrongdoing. Penn State has agreed to continue implementing a strategy to make all electronic and information technology systems used on its campuses fully accessible to blind students, faculty, and staff. The information technology systems covered include course management systems, Web sites, classroom technology, library resources, banking services, and more. University Spokesman Lisa Powers said that Penn State strives to maintain strong academic leadership and has a long record of providing equal access to educational information and services for all students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: "Universities must commit to making sure all of the technology that they use is accessible to blind students, or else the blind will be left behind in education and denied opportunity. We are pleased that Penn State, one of the largest and most recognized public universities in the country, has agreed to take additional steps to create an environment of equality in which blind students can pursue their educational and career aspirations without unnecessary barriers. The National Federation of the Blind hopes and believes that the steps that Penn State is taking will set an example for colleges and universities throughout the nation." "For more than twenty years Penn State has provided assistive technologies to students, faculty, and staff," Powers said. "We will work with the National Federation of the Blind and the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, to put in place the additional technologies, procedures, and ongoing policies that will help us continue meeting our strong commitment to access." The university has had a number of policies and programs in place to help individuals with disabilities, such as a classroom note-taking service, textbooks and course materials in electronic format, technology assistance, and adjustments in testing procedures, to name just a few. The university has a longstanding policy of providing reasonable accommodations to anyone requesting assistance. "We can always do more," Powers said. "In addition to any continued adjustments to our policies, we also are working with our outside vendors to see if their products and procedures can be adjusted to meet the needs of our students." Russlynn Ali, assistant secretary for civil rights, with the U.S. Department of Education, said: "Colleges and universities have specific legal obligations to provide students, faculty, and staff with disabilities the same benefits, programs, and services. This office is committed to working with complainants and institutions to ensure that the important nondiscrimination provisions of this nation's laws are enforced and implemented." From: Kevin Todd Mintz > Reply-To: Kevin Todd Mintz > Subject: Request for participation in senior thesis survey from Kevin Mintz To: kmintz@fas.harvard.edu Dear Student: I am a senior at Harvard College majoring in Government and conducting my senior thesis research on the barriers students with severe physical and sensory disabilities encounter as they attempt to acquire the equal access to postsecondary education guaranteed to them under federal law. Regardless of abilities, most students face challenges in their academic course work after high school. Yet students with disabilities often face additional obstacles because of unique limitations arising from their conditions. As a student with a physical disability, I have faced many challenges in my own pursuit of a college degree. My research is motivated by the obstacles I have faced. I am writing to you to invite you to participate in my study. Doing so would require you to complete a 20 to 30-minute online survey about your experiences as a student with a disability at a postsecondary institution. The survey will also ask about your experiences with certain federal and state government agencies that are designated to support students with disabilities pursuing postsecondary education. In order to participate, you must be a student with a physical, mobility, visual, or hearing impairment, age 18 or older, and currently attend a postsecondary institution. The survey is designed to be accessible to those who use a screen reader. At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview which will provide you with an opportunity to share your experiences in greater detail. As a token of appreciation for your participation in the online survey, a $10 gift card from Amazon.com will be sent to your email address. If you feel comfortable doing so, please forward this message to as many as five additional students who you feel may be eligible to participate. Please carbon copy kmintz@fas.harvard.edu on any such invitations so that I can keep track of the recruitment process. By participating in this survey, you will not only be helping me complete my senior thesis but will have the opportunity to make a contribution to a piece of research that will hopefully inform scholars and policy makers about the challenges students with physical and sensory disabilities face as they work to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become contributing members of their communities. They are requesting 10 licenses within the $2864 amount On the SCF proposal. Let me know if you or the committee need additional information. * General description of it and what you use it for. A: Mplus is a statistical software package designed to conduct latent variable modeling similar to that of AMOS, but with wider capabilities. For instance, while AMOS can only handle continuous data, Mplus has the advantage of being able to analyze binary and categorical data in a latent-variable context. The software is also used in psychometric analyses, and is featured in texts on psychometrics, that, if we have access to the software, we could then teach from. Overall, having Mplus would benefit the department in that students could have access to one of the latest cutting-edge statistical programs that is specialized to conduct particular advanced analyses that SPSS (and even SAS) cannot do. * Is it used in a lab or classroom? (I know it's for psyx 222, 520, 521, 522) A: The software would be used both in class and in lab for courses such as Psyx. 522 and Psyx. 524. More than that, the software would be used for students' dissertations, etc., who wish to learn a popular statistical package and reap the benefits of it. Having a couple copies of Mplus would add to our capabilities to conduct higher analyses in these courses, as well as for students to have more options when it comes to data analyses for theses and dissertations. If I mention the software in class, and discuss the code for a particular analysis, I want students to know there is a copy downstairs in the lab that they can try these analyses on. Having "Mplus knowledge" (or at least exposure) on one's CV is a very attractive marketing feature for students who may go on to teach quantitative courses. * How many students do you think uses it? A: I usually have approx. 5 to 8 students enrolled in Psyx. 522, and another 10 or so enrolled in Psyx. 524. Any or all of these students would have access to it, at least as a means of trying out procedures that are listed in textbooks, etc., Regarding dissertations, I suspect fewer students would use it, but at least we'd have a copy or two available should they venture in that direction. In the structural equation modeling field, there are generally 4 very popular packages: 1) AMOS, 2) EQS, 3) Lisrel, and 4) Mplus. Having AMOS and Mplus "on board" in the department extends students' quantitative options for data analyses, and in particular, the *types* of data analyses that can be performed. Barrier-free lesson topics are: * Week 1: Accessible Online Learning Is a Three-legged Stool * Lesson 1: Introduction to Online Learning * Lesson 2: Online Learning and Students with Disabilities * Week 2: Using Tools You Already Use and Know * Lesson 3: Creating Accessible Content With MS Office * Lesson 4: Creating Accessible Content With PowerPoint * Week 3: Going Beyond Authoring with MS Office * Lesson 5: Accessible Content for Science Technology and Math * Lesson 6: Creating Accessible Content Using Multimedia * Week 4: Pulling It All Together * Lesson 7: Putting Content Online and Checking Its Accessibility * Lesson 8: Supporting and Managing Online Accessibility The recommended text for the course is: Making Online Teaching Accessible (available from Amazon and an accessible version from bookshare.org) Those who register for Barrier-free E-learning in November 2011 will receive a bonus pamphlet: Ten Tips for Online Teachers Students from overseas and EASI Annual Members receive a 20% discount on the registration fee of $350.
