Accessibility to the rescue! Go to your Settings (usually in the bar at the bottom of the device). Then select General and Accessibility. Under Accessibility, turn on Bold Text. Life will instantly improve! I deplore the fact that designers cannot follow simple guidelines about contrast, but I applaud the fact that in desperation many "nondisabled" folks will now be introduced to the wonders of access for all and Universal Design. The paper first appears bent, but not torn or ripped and occurs along the guide holes on the far left of the document. It only happens about halfway through the page. By the third page, though, the holes are becoming ripped and then this begins to impact the document. Once again though, this does not happen for all the guide holes, but only those holes that are in the middle to 2/3 of the way through each page. At first we thought there was something with the guides before the paper is embossed, but subsequent observations during the embossing process have indicated that the guide holes are fine. We think there may be something with the left-most hammer in that it may not be retracting enough during the print job and is catching the guide holes as the paper is embossed. I am following up with Tiger, but was curious if anyone else has encountered this issue. That being said, I have not been having the best success with MathPlayer and IE right now, so there are no guarantees it would work for a student who requires screen reading support. Depending on the people involved, Cath's suggestion is how we would likely proceed as well. Using the handwriting recognition tools with MathType in Windows, you could meet the professor "halfway" in that the equations could be handwritten with the caveat that it would require MS Word. We have had this situation a few times and our alt format team ended up doing the conversions for such solution sets. Those scanned documents can be a real nightmare as the handwriting can be a mess to decipher so as to convert into MathType+MathML. I do think there may be some options with the Central Access Reader from Central Washington Univ (http://www.cwu.edu/central-access/reader) in that the professor could provide the documents as MS Word+MathType and the student could then use the CAR application to read the content; no need to deal with MathML. In general, though, my recommendation is to at least use MathType+MS Word (or Scientific Notebook) so as to streamline the conversion into a format that uses MathML. This could be for a web page, MS Word document, or DAISY+Math book. Also, we will be holding a special election for the President position. This will be for a one year term, with an election for the position to be held at it's usual time next fall. Currently the existing Vice President and Treasurer have confirmed that they are willing to stand for their same positions. We also have one person who has agreed to stand for the President position. Here are the current nominees: President: Sean Keegan (Stanford) Vice President: Teresa Haven (Arizona State) Treasurer: Heidi Scher (University of Arkansas) Also, we will have a vote on the business plan as proposed in prior email. Nominations for these positions are encouraged. Please send nominations for VP, Treasurer and/or President to me (danc@uw.edu) and Joe Humbert (joehumber@iu.edu). Deadline for submitting nominations is the end of this week, Friday October 4, by 3pm PST. The elections will be held online, current ATHEN membership as described by the bylaws is necessary to be eligible to vote. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you in November at AHG. -- -*- Dan Comden danc@uw.edu Access Technology Center www.uw.edu/itconnect/accessibility/atl/ University of Washington UW Information Technology -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It seems like it would be most useful when used in combination with a caption editor like Synchrimedia, to help reduce time and overhead by creating a "rough draft" to polish up. From the FAQ, "What are some high value MAVIS scenarios?", the answer is: "A company that wants to reduce the cost of closed captioning by getting a ?draft? closed caption to start with." Not a bad idea. But why not just use the free Dragon Dictate app on an iPad to create the starter rough draft, to then edit and polish up? -Alexa On Mon, Oct 7, 2013 at 2:31 PM, Kidd,Allison wrote: > Hi All, **** > > ** ** > > Does anyone have any experience using Greenbutton inCus for captioning? > http://greenbutton.com/Applications/Incus**** > > ** ** > > If so, how have you found it? MathPlayer has been downloaded over a million times and billions of expressions have been rendered by it on the web. Additionally, tens of million expressions have been spoken allowing people with disabilities from dyslexia to blindness to get access to math. However, MathPlayer cannot be made to work with IE 10 or IE11 until Microsoft decides it is worth their attention. Until they address the problems, it means an end to accessible math in IE -- IE goes from being the best solution for math accessibility to having no math accessibility. It also means that websites that deliver math need to use the JavaScript-based MathJax solution if the math is going to render in IE. MathJax is a great solution and works with MathPlayer now, but without MathPlayer, the display is many times slower than if MathPlayer is used. So with every page containing math that you view, you are paying a price for the lack of MathML support in IE. Why MathPlayer doesn't work in IE10 and IE11 We wish we could make MathPlayer work with IE10 and IE11, but we can't. A half a year ago when we released MathPlayer 3, IE10 simply had too many bugs for us to be able to say MathPlayer worked with it. A recent update to IE10 fixed a number of bugs so that MathPlayer now works tantalizingly well except that math inside of a span or table causes IE10 to crash. The crash is in IE10, not MathPlayer -- earlier versions of IE work well with the same MathPlayer code. Unfortunately, these two cases occur quite often, so MathPlayer isn't usable in IE10. Microsoft is aware of the bug but indicated that fixing the problem was not a priority for them. There is a different reason why we can't make MathPlayer work with IE11: Microsoft disabled the plug-in technology MathPlayer uses to display math in IE called a binary behavior. Behaviors allow third party developers to extend the capabilities of the browser. It is a powerful idea, but unfortunately Microsoft disabled support for binary behaviors. What can you do? If math and accessible math on the web is important to you, make some noise! Write a blog post, share this story with your friends and colleagues, contact Microsoft directly and get your friends and colleagues to do so also. If they get enough direct feedback from customers ? not other software developers, they will hopefully give this matter the attention it deserves. You can report Internet Explorer issues directly to them at http://connect.microsoft.com/IE. If you can contact their Technical Support Staff by telephone your report will carry even more weight. You can contact Microsoft Technical Support at (800) 936-5700. In the meantime, if you need math accessibility or don't want to wait extra time for pages to display math, don't upgrade to IE10 or IE11. That also means not upgrading to Windows 8.x because Windows 8.x only supports IE10 and IE11. With your help, we hope that IE returns to being the best browser for viewing math. Message-ID: Hi Group, What do your institutions say about the use of inaccessible publisher content? We are working hard to make sure our faculty are aware of the accessibility requirements and standards while constructing their courses, but then they adopt inaccessible publisher content. I've had so many publishers contact me and want to "partner" on accessibility. By partner, they seem to want us to be OK with their not being 100% accessible. While I understand that they might not be there yet, they seem unwilling to say when they will be (or they say and then don't meet that deadline). Do you forbid use of inaccessible content from sources like publishers and other outside sources where we can't do anything to retrofit them? I'm not sure whether there is a transitional type of solution to give publishers time to bring their content up to accessibility standards, or whether this just lets the publishers put off accessibility for a few more years. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks, Karen Karen M. My name is KimBoo York and I'm the new Assistive Tech Lab Coordinator at FSU. I am replacing Patti Lester (whom many of you know), who has gone off to greener pastures. While I have worked here at the Student Disability Resource Center at FSU in a part-time position doing mostly alt-text work, I'm new to the whole "running the whole place" gig. The newbie question I've got right now is more of a request. We do not have a written policy here regarding alternative text services, in relation to fair use and the Chafee Amendment. I'm getting with legal to discuss this matter, but I was hoping that anyone here who works for a state university which *does* have such a policy would be willing to share it with me as reference? It a topic fraught with land mines and I want some clarity, especially since it concerns being able to adequately support our student population. Please feel free to reply to my personal email (kyork@fsu.edu) or to this list, I'll be looking out either way. Message-ID: Hi everyone, I have been asked to look at a PDF form and evaluate its accessibility with a screen reader. The first thing I notice is that the document is untagged, and I'm not sure whether the fields are properly labeled. Jaws couldn't read many of the field names when I tabbed through the document in Acrobat Reader. What's interesting though is that I accidentally tested using the built-in PdF reader in windows 8, and to my surprise, found that Jaws read fields much better in the native Windows 8 app than it did using Adobe's own reader. Why would that be? I'm attaching the form to this message, any comments or thoughts would be much appreciated. That is a definitely a valid concern though, as many people are curious as to what the experience is like from a user's perspective. Nonetheless, we will leave some time for Q&A so that people have an opportunity to have some of their questions answered. More than the live demos though, the hope is that information is shared about the workarounds that can be provided, who to work with/contact for the remediation of issues, and what to expect in months ahead.
