I appreciate the heads-up on the lack of medical support regarding Irlen
Syndrome.  I am aware of the controversy and have already discussed this
with my director.  I don't feel the need to override the student and her
doctor's diagnosis based on my own non-medical opinion.  She has numerous
other symptoms due to a TBI and has found this method to be effective for
her to alleviate headaches and difficulties with reading.  I don't want to
disregard the student's opinion of what works for her, whether it is a
placebo or otherwise.

I have a new student who is able to read more clearly and accurately using a
cyan transparency over printed material.  I know that Read & Write Gold has
a very nice masking tool to use on the screen which works great for her on
campus computers.  However, the student is wanting the same sort of function
on her own laptop (pc).  Does anyone know of any cheap or freeware that
masks the color of the screen?  I've found a couple of apps for iphones but
nothing else.

You might try http://fx-software.co.uk/assistive.htm and scroll down to find
ssOverlay. Works well on Win 7 & Win 8. Only problem is in Win8 it only
masks desktop programs and not Win8 metro apps. It is free.

Leyna,

Did your university purchase a site license for Read and Write gold?  I did
and I made the software available on our school site for any student to
download.  Use can use a tool provided by R&W to create take home versions
of the software for students.  It even lets your create a software key that
is only good for a set amount of time.  This way they can only have the
software while they are a student.
