Message-ID: <003001d08448$a8c63c60$fa52b520$@gmail.com>
Calling all ATHEN-ites!
Help is needed STAT on a mathplayer challenge.
I have downloaded and installed the latest version of MathPlayer from
Design Science (beta version). I have followed their instructions for
toggling IE in and out of the Enterprise (legacy) version for voiced math.
The documents have been prepared in MATHTYPE, all equations have been
converted per Greg Kraus's instructions to set cut & copy preferences to MML
&/or LaTex. Have also included the HTML code in each Math Type document page
header for local .htm: [] allowing the toggle between current IE version
and IE8 enterprise version.
Doing so has resulted in SPLENDID results using Central Access Reader from
Central Washington Univ. However nothing works at all using IE, Firefox, any
of our screen readers (NVDA or JAWS 16.0).
MathPlayer is installed but does not show up in any tool bar, and the "Speak
expression" command menu does not appear in any document.
There must be a step we're leaving out in the PUBLISH TO MATH PAGE.
Can any of you help troubleshoot the steps with me? I need to make sure we
have a workable workflow testing set up, plus I need to help get this set up
correctly on the student's computer.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I've had the same issue. If the target is not downloaded to the registry, it won't read. I've also had to reinstall the MathPlayer beta and then it reads. You might try both.

Hi Wink,
Is the math content being provided to the student as an alternate format solution or is the content being posted to a website?
If just an alternate format solution, you could use NVDA directly with MS Word as long as MathType is installed. You will need a special build of the NVDA screen-reader, but this may be another option such that you can bypass the conversion to a web page (the download link is on this page):

Take care,

Subject: [Athen] Accessible rapid eLearning tools
Message-ID:
Hello everyone!
My team is currently doing a research project on the accessibility of different "rapid eLearning tools". We are attempting to narrow down our list of preferred tools based on users' ability to create accessible course material with them. Below is a list of tools we are currently exploring:
Zebra Zapps
Articulate Studio (presenter, quiz maker, engage, etc.,)
Captivate (version 7, 8 and beyond)
Storyline and Storyline 2
Adobe Presenter
Kaltura
Recording in Adobe Connect Rooms
Does anyone out there utilize the programs listed above? We're interested in hearing what the accessibility experience has been with the output of these tools. We would also love any suggestions of tools other schools are using that create accessible course material. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, Dawn. Of the three you mention, I've had the opportunity to do some research on and see some demonstration of Kaltura, and their accessibility appears pretty good. Everything, including their players, is built on HTML5 (no Silverlight, no Flash); they encourage captioning as part of their wider searchability marketing; and everything I've seen so far is keyboard-accessible. They say they will have a good Descriptive Audio solution in place in the near future (next 90 days, I believe). I haven't gotten to play in a demo space yet, but what I've seen and read so far seem very promising.

Regarding Kaltura, I would suggest you do diligence and speak with schools that use/have used their system. To be frank, customer service was an area in which we found them lacking ? having used their product for ~2 years.
I am happy to share further details of our experience off the list for any who are interested.

Starting this month, Wiley will roll out a workflow to include alternative
text (alt text) in nearly all of our frontlist books. Wiley is one of the
first major publishers to include alt text this broadly.
Alt text is a description that provides contextual meaning to images and
illustrations. Non-visual browsers and screen readers express alt text to
readers when images cannot be accessed. This is an important criterion for
accessibility compliance.
Why alt text? As one of the major building blocks of accessibility, alt
text provides readers with contextual descriptions of images, enhancing
comprehension and providing a richer reading experience. By making our
products accessible, we ensure as wide an audience as possible can learn
from and enjoy them. Alt text also improves the versatility of products for
all readers; for instance, it can enable read-aloud for a user who prefers
to listen to a book.
Betsy Beaumon, President of Benetech , a non-profit
that develops new technologies to improve global literacy, said ?Readers
accessing content through digital audio simply hear the word ?image? when
alt text is not provided, depriving them of information critical to
understanding the relevance of the image. By ensuring that alt text is
provided for all images, Wiley is showing great leadership in the growing
movement in the publishing industry to ensure that content that is born
digital is also ?born accessible.? This is a milestone achievement.?
We developed our alt text guidelines in consultation with industry
standards organizations?including Benetech?s DIAGRAM Center, DAISY,
International Digital Publishing Forum, and the World Wide Web
Consortium?to ensure best practices are current. Going forward, alt text
will be included in our upcoming XML, EPUB, Kindle files, and select online
courses, and will begin appearing in products later this year. All of this
will help ensure we are also better positioned to meet the needs of
adoption partners?institutions, both public and private.
When materials are correctly designed, developed, edited and enabled, users
of all abilities have equal access to information and functionality.
We?re proud to continue to improve and enrich our products so that they can
be enjoyed by as many readers as possible!

In conjunction with this topic, I'm wondering if others would share whether they are including a statement of accessibility for their learning management systems ( a Quality Matters standard) in their syllabi accommodations statement, or in a technology section of the syllabi, or perhaps solely in their courses?

I went to Karen from Karlen Communications preconference on accessible
documents at CSUN, as well as her session on PDF/UA and they were both
excellent. The handouts that she shares on her site are really useful.
I also attended sessions from staff from Simply Accessible, and they
were also great. In particular, I think Derek Featherstone, was an
engaging and knowledgable presenter.
I'm not sure if either of these companies charge in US or Canadian, but
the Canadian dollar sucks right now, so you might get some added value
there.
Cheers,
Tara

Karen,
Is there a way to use a text outline with the descriptions of each of the items? Here?s a good description on the Penn State accessibility site on how to make flowcharts and concept maps accessible: http://accessibility.psu.edu/images/flowcharts/

I'm not sure if either of these companies charge in US or Canadian, but
the Canadian dollar sucks right now, so you might get some added value
there.
Cheers,
Tara

Hi Colleagues,
Does anyone know of a drawing or mapping software that's accessible to
screen reader users? Our Computer Information Systems courses use ERDs
(entity relationship diagrams) in their courses for database schemas, and
we are trying to come up with an equivalent.
Thanks!

Karen,
Is there a way to use a text outline with the descriptions of each of the items? Here?s a good description on the Penn State accessibility site on how to make flowcharts and concept maps accessible: http://accessibility.psu.edu/images/flowcharts/

Hi Linda,
Clockwork is not going to function on a Mac - it is a Windows only program. There is a limited web interface for students that is usable with most any web browser, but the main program itself is Windows.
Have you reported the issue to the Clockwork people regarding the issue with Dragon? I know they have said they are compatible with Dragon in the past and it is possible that something has changed on either side.
Take care,
Sean

> Hello all!
>
> Interested in learning what other institutions are doing with the access issues with the MyLab products. Specifically, our institution has transitioned to a math course only offered with the enhancement of MyMathLab. Students are required to do classwork, homework, practice tests, quizzes, and exams through the program, which is presenting some accessibility concerns. We would like to push for the math department to have an on-ground course which is fully accessible.
