[Athen] Sonocent Notetaking

Liza,
Our current goal at the moment is not to get every student using it, but to get sufficient data collection for future funding.
The landing page has just been live since Wednesday of this week. So far advertising has been to SWD only,  and we have 47 downloads. I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but next week, our academic partners will begin promoting it in their areas. Thousands of possible students, athletes and veterans.
We have purchased 250 (3-month) loan license for this phase of the pilot. In Fall 2016, we expect the need to triple that number.
I personally used Sonocent in my graduate level courses this semester, and wish it would have been around when I was going for my undergrad (late 90s).

At UCF, we have begun assigning licenses to students using the handy loan manager that Sonocent offers.

SAS has two notetaking technologies options for students. Recently, our Accessibility Consultants have found greater success for students using tools that can help them take notes (and study), instead of depending on another individual. We moved to a volunteer system, instead of paying notetakers. The money we saved, we moved toward these two technologies. The first one, everyone already knows, LiveScribe Echo Smartpen. We knew that this hardware option might not be the best option for some students, so we invested in Sonocent Audio NoteTaker too.

Sonocent has been very popular from day one. When we first started offering to SWD, we had friends, roommates and/or classmates of SWD contacting our office asking for copies of the software. Recently, we have partnered with our Academic Support for Student Athletes, Veterans Academic Support, and our General Academic Support Center (Tutoring and Learning Skills) for a pilot.  Instead of just handing out licenses, we decided to have the students request from a Sonocent landing page<http://kars.sdes.ucf.edu/sonocent> in our Knights Academic Resources webpage. This also gives us an opportunity for data collection to help with future funding. Once we get the request, we send out a step by step guide on how to install the program and how to activate the semester license. We thought it would be best to purchase license for the semester length and renew them, as opposed to purchasing yearly. I can send you a copy of this step by step guide install guide if you email me.

*Review the landing page all you like, but If you click on ‘request for license’, please do not submit the Qualtrics survey. It skews our data collection. I know I shouldn’t have to ask, but I just did a presentation at ATIA, and half the members of the audience looked ahead at the presentation slides and already submitted before I requested that they not. Obviously we can’t send you a copy. :) *

My big suggestion…talk with your faculty centers. They need to know that this software is being given away. We recently added a statement on the website and the emails - ‘Sonocent may not be permissible in all classes. Please review your class syllabus and policies regarding audio recording and notetaking technology or discuss with your instructor..’
