[Athen] Assessment Tools

All,
Here’s the link to the Google Form itself:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TafBRa995SdJC2H_deeE7Gqg_HAPPCip56kaGpZIfJ4/viewform?usp=send_form
If I’ve done it correctly <fingers crossed>, you should also be able to view the corresponding responses spreadsheet. Sadly, I’m not a programmer type; I created the Google Form as a mock-up example for a more secure online form I’m hoping our web designers can implement for me. An online form will allow all of our campuses to easily aggregate data into the same database. Hopefully, this means we’ll be able to generate meaningful reports for our entire system.
Here’s the link to the shared folder:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BztZX9jiaWWdTnNOeXJuUzJnUEE&usp=sharing
Apart from the Google Form and corresponding data spreadsheet, the folder contains the following MS Word documents:
1. The original .DOCM version of the form.
2. The assessor’s Assistive Technology Reference Tables. Following the SETT Framework, these tables match various assistive technologies with specific academic tasks. They are intentionally NOT organized by function. Therefore, using the reference tables appropriately requires a level of familiarity with each of these technologies.
3. A “quick print” assessment. Although the AT Fitting is meant to be completed using a digital form, I imagine circumstances when that’s simply not possible. However, an abbreviated printed format can be filled out quickly by hand and retained for later data entry.
Finally, a couple of notes about the “AT Fitting” process itself:
A. IMO, (HE) AT assessments are most useful when administered multiple times for any given student throughout their academic career. Apart from ensuring a student’s AT toolset matches changing Tasks and Environments, collecting data over time helps the Assistive Technologist dynamically pinpoint AT and services that can best afford equal access to many students right now. Additionally, data gathered can helpfully inform future effective AT purchases and service programs.
B. You’ll notice there are 3 types of AT or services that are glaringly absent from the Reference Tables and the AT Fitting form itself: screen readers for people who are blind (in other words JAWS), Braille alt format, and ASL Interpreter\CART services. I intentionally left these out of the assessment process simply because I rarely, (if ever), need to recommend them. Students who require these technologies and services typically don’t need me to tell them so; they’ve been using them long before they enrolled in college.
Thank you all so much for your feedback and critiques! I sincerely appreciate your consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Gratefully,

FYI I’ve created an AT assessment tool based on Joy Zabala’s SETT framework that I’m pushing to have implemented throughout our college system. It’s in final development stages, but I’d love to have input and critique from fellow ATHEN members.
Apart from functioning as an AT-matching assessment, I’ve tried to design the instrument so that it also gathers data over time that can help quantify:
1. What AT is being used the most
2. How effective recommended AT is at overcoming given learning barriers
Please let me know if you’d like access to the Google Form I’ve created and if you’d be willing to offer advice or input for improvement.
Thanks!

Yes the WATI has some great forms but least 1/2 have no place in the HE legal space. I have been trying to promote research and outcome based evaluations for over 15 years, and for a variety of reasons it does not happen. One of the biggest reason is that almost all of this research is funded by OSEP.
One could wish, I always try to base my decisions on data, unfortunately the data is more often than not not valid or reliable.

That's a good point Ron. I've been trying to do a quick search for AT models that are geared towards HE, but haven't found any. Aren't the WATI and ASNAT also in the K-12 sphere?

These are all developed in the K12 space. You need to be careful that your use of them are age appropriate and appropriate for HE.

Hi all,
I'm going through CSUN's assistive technology applications certificate and just finished the module on assessment tools. The top tools seemed to be the SETT framework, the Human Activity/Assistive Technology model (HAAT), and the Matching Persons to Technology (MPT). You don't need to follow these by the letter, but they are good "scaffolds" for developing your own.

The only ones that I am aware of for the HE space are out of the K-12 space. They can be adapted, or at least you used to be able to. I would take a look at the QIAT website.

Subject: [Athen] Assessment Tools
Does anyone out there have an assessment tool for AT that you would be willing to share, or links to resources that may be helpful with the creation of such a tool? In the short term what I need is an actual tool for assessing the effectiveness/usefulness of AT that is being used; but, for the long term, tools such as intake and programmatic assessments would be helpful as well.
Thanks!
