Thanks again for your inputs everyone. I haven’t noticed fumes either with 3D printers but from what I understand they are not noticeable but can be toxic. https://3dprintingindustry.com/news/toxic-abs-pla-fumes-3dsafety-org-inquires-vocs-60796/

I second what Wink has said regarding letting the other departments own the 3D printers and let you use it occasionally when needed. But, you’re right, Leyna, they are noisy! In our 3D lab we have several types of 3D printers in a rather large room that “supposedly” has ventilation to port the fumes out, but I haven’t noticed any real fumes albeit I don’t stay all day in the room. And I have severe chemical sensitivities.

We have created some amazing 3d tactile graphics for STEM classes. Although if the chemistry dept. wants to own one and let you use it, you get the benes without the fumes or cost.

Not much point in duplicating the devices.

See you soon!

Hi Wink,

We have used 3D printers on campus to create manipulatives for a student who is blind. However, I two objections to buying our own: They are noisy and they have questionable fumes. I think those two things limit my desire to get one. We’d have to create a room for it. So far, other departments have been kind enough to lend us theirs when we need it. I’m still considering. Do you recommend one?

Leyna,

any 3-d printers on your wish list?

Thank you guys! I keep forgetting all the fun stuff we have. We do have a few DaVinci’s for magnification and we are in the process of getting a V-scanner to scan in books without de-binding.

One item that we’ve found to be helpful for low-vision users is the Enhanced Vision DaVinci HD/OCR Desktop Magnifier<https://www.enhancedvision.com/low-vision-product-line/davinci-all-in-one-hd-video-magnifier-with-text-to-speech.html>. We’ve used it extensively in classroom settings in the last few years and with a price tag of $2,995 it could help put a small dent in your budget ☺

We have a wonderful donor who has helped us stock our AT lab with our current software and hardware over the past two years. We have tried to be frugal and still have another $15,000 to spend. The donor wants to see her money spent so we are trying to decide what we might buy that fulfills the following criteria (a) is useful to our students and won’t be obsolete quickly (b) if not directly useful to students, then useful in increasing awareness in staff and faculty (c) is somewhat showy and/or state-of-the-art so that the donor can be proud.

We currently have the following: Read & Write Gold, JAWS, Zoomtext, Dragon, large dual monitors, adjustable tables, task lights, ergonomic chairs, new high-speed scanner, ABBYY, Duxbury, Math Type, a thermoform printer and a Braille printer, Livescribe pens, various tactile tools for the blind including a calculator. Does anyone have any recent large purchases that have made in impact?
