When they talk about a "cell-5 heading," it refers to a heading that begins in the fifth cell (in other words, has four blank spaces before it) and has a blank line before it. (You can find headings in Chapter 4.) A 1-3 margin means that the first line begins in cell one (no indent) and each succeeding lines begins in cell 3 (two blank spaces), like a "hanging ident" in print. There were about 6 of us representing postsecondary institutions. Most attendees were Policy #188 coordinators from state agencies that are not educational entities. Below I?ve shared some content for those who might be interested. The Summit was primary a series of presentations by representatives from state agencies that included the DES Office of Risk Management, Department of Health, Department of Ecology. Ryan Leisinger of WATtech hosted the meeting. A few highlights/recommendations within the content of presentations are provided below. Consider conducting three types of web accessibility testing: - automated code testing - functional, usability testing - user testing ?It is not just about accessibility; it?s about usability.? "Lack of accessibility = discrimination? Throughout this work we need to gets vendor buy-in as far as accessibility. Consider sending a letter to existing vendors to tell them to share their VPAT, to share with them the Policy #188 requirement, and to tell them that they are accountable for providing accessible products and lack of accessibility could lead to loss of business with the agency. Develop a plan that includes Procurement. Personnel can be motivated by making a positive difference, by being a change agenda. Build accessibility into the life cycle of developed/procured IT. Ideally, provide accessible content; if not possible, articulate alternative access. Develop a document/website that includes covered technology, policy, standard, planned steps, and name of IT Accessibility Coordinator. Consider having an IT accessibility seeding committee, task force and/or work group. Engage people with disabilities; gain feedback on IT, content. Provide training tailored to specific audiences. Conduct assessment, monitoring, reporting, process. Prioritize your work; focus on high impact products. Report progress toward increased accessibility of IT. ------------------------------------------------------------ Sheryl Burgstahler, Ph.D. Director, UW Accessible Technology & DO-IT, UW-IT Affiliate Professor, Education University of Washington, Box 354842 Seattle, WA 98195 206-543-0622 FAX 206-221-4171 http://staff.washington.edu/sherylb sherylb@uw.edu From hkramer at ahead.org Fri Aug 4 13:37:52 2017 From: hkramer at ahead.org (Howard Kramer) Date: Sat Jun 9 18:34:23 2018 Subject: [Athen] Invite to test MOOC for Inclusive Design for Online Education Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, Recently a couple of colleagues and I completed development of a MOOC on "Inclusive Design for Online Education." In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <2531227fa0b4451abc6b6af6ef57aa64@ES-CHL-EMR-06.es.govt.state.ma.us> We did research on form builders back in 2013. We did not find any that had fully accessible builder interfaces. For the ones that were mostly accessible, the drag-and-drop features were the problem areas. We dropped quite a few from consideration because they didn't create accessible forms, either. (Many others were rejected for not meeting our business requirements, such as federated management.) We ended up selecting Formstack, with the following known problems: * Form CAPTCHA: The CAPTCHA feature they offered did not have an accessible alternative. We instruct form authors to NOT use it. An accessibility warning appears if they try to enable it. * Supporting Text: Forms allow the display of supporting text in addition to input titles. There was a coding error that caused the supporting text to not be read by screen readers. We instruct users to NOT use supporting text. We reported this bug to the vendor. * Conditional Logic: This feature allows the display of certain fields based on the value of other fields. This feature did not pass accessibility testing. We notified the vendor of the issue and instruct users to NOT use this feature. Note that this was 4 years ago and they may have addressed some or all of these. sb Sarah E. Dragon NaturallySpeaking users cannot dictate into the captcha screen as dictated text is not recognized as a series of keystrokes. If you want to prevent robo fills in your online forms, I suggest choosing "I am not a robot" checkboxes. These can be made accessible for both JAWS & dictation software users. We did research on form builders back in 2013. We did not find any that had fully accessible builder interfaces. For the ones that were mostly accessible, the drag-and-drop features were the problem areas. We dropped quite a few from consideration because they didn't create accessible forms, either. (Many others were rejected for not meeting our business requirements, such as federated management.) We ended up selecting Formstack, with the following known problems: . Form CAPTCHA: The CAPTCHA feature they offered did not have an accessible alternative. We instruct form authors to NOT use it. An accessibility warning appears if they try to enable it. . Supporting Text: Forms allow the display of supporting text in addition to input titles. There was a coding error that caused the supporting text to not be read by screen readers. We instruct users to NOT use supporting text. We reported this bug to the vendor. . Conditional Logic: This feature allows the display of certain fields based on the value of other fields. There has been pressure from administration to shift my position from the Adaptive Technology Coordinator to the Alt Text Coordinator. I maintain our AT software, show students how to use the AT, do the alt text requests, maintain the database of files and student requests. In 2016, I requested or scanned almost 1000 alt text requests. I have been told by a student user of JAWS that the files I provide from publishers are set up with headers and she does not have any issues with the files. Because of the recent AHEAD conference, I am now informed that all the file names must be changed to "01 Chapter, 02 Chapter", etc. I do have a couple of student workers who can assist me with the file name changes. I have started with my current requested files and plan work back, by semester, to rename all 3000 titles in my database. I hope this shows good faith effort on my part. Along with this issue, I am also expected to demonstrate to my department staff the steps to make all documents created within the office to be accessible before we disseminate them. While the accessibility check in Microsoft Word is useful, it is sometimes difficult to follow their steps to correct errors. I am feeling a little overwhelmed and could use some tips on how to stay up with these requests. Thanks for reading.
