Perhaps you can point out to him that book publishers have much more sophisticated layout systems, and people with expertise in kerning. (See also Bevi's email earlier about the kerning capabilities of common document processing software.) It's OK in books, because they go to a lot effort to make sure it is.

I am struck once again by how little correlation there is between "it looks tidy" and "it's effortless to read/use".
