AT Certifications in Higher Ed Message-ID: Darren Gabbert's definitive 2009 ATHEN E-Journal #44 white paper entitled "Certification and Training Opportunities for Access Technologists in Higher Education: A Survey of Resources" (https://athenpro.org/node/90) concludes: "From a certification standpoint, we are a people without a country." Mr. Gabbert's research finds most assistive technology degree programs and certifications emphasize PT\OT, medical, or rehabilitation-centric training. Eight years on, and the casual observer would still be hard pressed to find otherwise. However, I've noticed that IAAP is now offering CPACC and WAS certifications (http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/certificationapplication). The IAAP is a relatively young organization, but they seem to have put a lot of work into creating industry certifications specifically for web accessibility. Considering the trajectory that many types of compensatory assistive technologies have taken towards mobile and web-based solutions, having this type of certification seems valuable to assistive technologists in higher education. So what's your take on IAAP's certification offerings and\or the dearth of higher education-focused AT professional training? Considering the not-insignificant costs of testing and\or study materials, is it "worth it" to pursue certs like RESNA's ATP or CSUN's ATACP? Are web accessibility certifications more applicable to post-secondary AT para\professionals? Thanks for your input! Joseph M. There are two significant pieces to Ally ? the reporting side and the faculty feedback/remediation side. We have had the reporting tool installed since last year and have found that simple awareness (and identification) of courses and file types that have the kinds of accessibility issues that can be identified through automatic checking. The reporting tools are very useful and provide the opportunity filter down to a course or to look at all courses with a specific issue. For the instructor feedback and remediation piece we have only turned it on for a limited set of faculty. We are finding that the remediation and workflow they provide to assist faculty in making more accessible documents are helpful, but there is currently very little ability to customize that experience to limit what types of feedback we provide or direct faculty to institutional resources. Their workflow for adding alt text to images for example is great and we would love to turn on that functionality for faculty, but we are not yet ready to start asking faculty to tag a PDF document. That said, the Ally team has been very receptive to feedback and are releasing new features on a regular basis. AT Certifications in Higher Ed In-Reply-To: References: , Message-ID: When I worked for a grant for the public schools for the state of Florida that provided augmentative communication/assistive technology evaluations, our team felt it was important to take the RESNA ATP certification. My background is in occupational therapy and I felt like the exam was very similar to taking the OT board all over again. Many teachers did not pass the test so they were not certified. After awhile it became extremely expensive for me to keep up my certification and since I had moved to higher education, it became difficult for me to attend the conferences I needed to in order to keep up my certification. In addition, the re-certification cost skyrocketed (way more for my OT license which I need to practice OT in Florida and OT board certification combined) so I sadly had to drop it. To make a long story longer, I really don't think the RESNA ATP is worth it to work in higher education. There are no jobs requiring these certifications and hardware/software are updating to new technologies on a yearly basis. As a beginner to the field, these could be invaluable, but as someone who works with diversity and inclusion, and see that they only have 2 testing centers for AT users (both on the East Coast) and 1000 testing centers for non-AT users (across the nation), which doesn?t make me want to run out and get their certification (I also use TTS and screen overlays, which isn?t listed on their site as an accommodation). Mr. Gabbert?s research finds most assistive technology degree programs and certifications emphasize PT\OT, medical, or rehabilitation-centric training. Eight years on, and the casual observer would still be hard pressed to find otherwise. However, I?ve noticed that IAAP is now offering CPACC and WAS certifications (http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/certificationapplication). So what?s your take on IAAP?s certification offerings and\or the dearth of higher education-focused AT professional training? Considering the not-insignificant costs of testing and\or study materials, is it ?worth it? to pursue certs like RESNA?s ATP or CSUN?s ATACP? Are web accessibility certifications more applicable to post-secondary AT para\professionals? Thanks for your input! Joseph M. I'm trying to convince them it's the new podcast recorded on mobile devices and uploaded to course shared cloud environments in a Sonocent proprietary format (.ran for desktop recordings and .mran for mobile recordings) not really known by the public. It would also make notetaking a little easier since professors could share their audio and students could use that to perform an "audio replace" and overwrite their audio recording, maintaining their highlighted notes in the process. (it's magical) I didn't have these problems when making SensusAccess, JAWS or ClaroRead available to the campus community. I see that Sonocent is now releasing a mobile bundle. Shotgun mic, 6000mA battery, Desktop client and Sonocent link (Mobile Pro version). I'm attempting to convert my 100 licenses to the mobile bundles, without the hardware. Check out the R&W Chrome plugin. There's another plugin to add where you can OCR content using only the R&W Chrome plugin, which is helpful to those on Chromebooks. If anyone needs a short-term workaround, I just wanted to point out that you can display captions using Amara.org?s embedded player as a substitute for the YouTube embedded player. The only caveat is that you need to have a copy of the video?s caption file that you can upload to Amara?s website, so this is problematic if you don?t own the video. Detailed steps: 1. Log into your Amara.org account (or create one). 2. Go to ?Subtitle Video?. 3. Enter the YouTube URL you want to use, click ?Begin?. 4. On the left side of the page that loads for the video, click the ?Upload them directly? link to upload your .srt file. (If you?re lucky, there will be a ?Languages? section that says ?English?, which means that someone has already uploaded English captions for that particular video.) 5. Once that is done, click ?Get Embed Code? next to the ?Language? header in that left sidebar. 6. Paste that code into your HTML to replace the YouTube embed code. Thanks for any connections. My former student worker, Amber Cruz has relocated to Reston, Virginia upon graduation and is looking for work. She was with me for over 2 years. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Her excellent work ethic and attention to detail is unsurpassed. She was willing to go the extra mile whenever we needed after hours help. She was compassionate with our students and yet was able to attend to all her editing tasks. She is an expert using ABBYY to convert textbooks to an accessible format and also helped with research finding books on learning ally, book share, and access text network. She contacted publishers as well and located hard to find books on several occasions. Along with the usual workload, she used her artistic talents to create marketing tools and helped with our open house events. She is quiet, creative, organized and mature beyond her years. I was so sorry to lose her. But they do graduate and leave us as we all know. If anyone has information about a job including alternate media conversion or similar detail-oriented work, please let me know and I will pass it on to her. We also have it available at 4 other UC's. Here's my latest report: http://access.sensus.dk/report/ucdavis/report-2017-06-23.htm Note: Usage went down for Spring quarter. I usually have 180+ conversions performed within the last 90 days. Pro's: - Easy to use, includes an email submission as well as a web portal iframe. - Can be restricted to campus email accounts. - Attachment sizes are not a worry (larger files are provided as a link). - Automated conversions into multiple formats. - 27 audio languages available for students or language departments to use - Conversion into accessible formats without the need of specialized software (Adobe Pro doesn't need to be installed) - Reports can be sent of usage (usually done everyday showing 90 days of usage) - Can submit through web portal as URL, Computer upload, or pasting text into window. - Students can submit chapters of textbooks to service for quick conversions into audio. Con's: - Sometimes documents need to be resubmitted due to becoming stuck in the queue. - Some documents may need more than one submission o PDF to Word, then Word to Tagged PDF (PDF to Tagged PDF != Accessible PDF) - Garbage in, garbage out (bad scans = inaccessible document reading random characters) - Can not submit URL's which require authentication. - Will attempt to OCR wording within images, making science books interesting. - Marketing usage of the product - Can have issues submitting content within Safari sometimes. It works similar to the Ally plugin. The differences between the 2 being: - SensusAccess creates a straight audio file of the text. - Ally creates an audio file which announces "beginning of paragraph" before each paragraph, and if a PDF is tagged incorrectly, every sentence may announce "beginning of paragraph". - SensusAccess can create DAISY math audio overlays using Word math editing tools (NOTE: I've never used it). - Ally, I'm not sure what it's doing to my math. From what I can tell, it's not doing anything. I only have access to my original MathJax HTML files and there are no "accessible downloads" available. In one document where I have my math as images (PDF), it didn't do anything but state "missing an alternative description". - SensusAccess formats: RTF, MOBI, ePUB*, Tagged PDF*, audio MP3*, TIFF, HTML, JPEG, GIF, BMP, DJV, and J2K. o Can alter audio speeds and choose languages - Ally formats: Tagged PDF, ePUB, HTML, Braille, Audio. o Can not alter speeds and only English is available (New feature) - SensusAccess works through a web portal or email submissions and can provide reports on usage. - Ally ties directly into an LMS and provides an "accessibility score" for each document uploaded. * Most used conversions From: athen-list [mailto:athen-list-bounces@mailman13.u.washington.edu] On Behalf Of Normajean.Brand Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2017 11:08 AM To: ATHEN Subject: [Athen] Circling back around to topic: SensusAccess Hello All, Late last year (Oct/Nov, Feb 2016) and even in fall of 2015, there were several inquiries made regarding SensusAccess. One problem we have is that with standards software purchases we can police them through our purchasing system. However Most of the software that is purchased for use in courses is being purchased with textbooks through the bookstore. Currently our professors submit their requests directly to the bookstore with little oversight from their departments. We are working with a third party bookstore that we will most likely need to get involved in this effort. Does anyone have an advice about what worked for their school on how they have handled the use of publisher provided content and how to monitor it to guarantee access for students with disabilities. Her eyes are open yet her gaze is not fixed upon anything within the picture frame. Her is mouth opened in a smile. Helen?s dark wavy hair is parted on the left and pulled back from her face. Short waves of whiter hair flanking the part frame her face. Her light-colored damask, short-sleeved dress has a V-shaped neckline that is both wide and deep. It covers her shoulders and dips down to just above her breasts. She wears a triple strand of round white pearls around the base of her neck.
