At times, his vision is good. At other times, his vision is blurry. College has exacerbated the issue and sometimes the blurriness last for days (instead of hours as it did previously). The student has not learned many of the skills others who are blind/low vision have. At this point, he cannot read tactile graphics in a way that is helpful to him. I read this article in Chemistry Education on making organic chemistry representations tactile and more accessible to students who are blind or low vision. For most of his life until college, he was able to manage the symptoms without a lot of assistance. The article also mentions "using text to speech output with Chem Draw." - Has anyone done this successfully? Would you be willing to share more about the process? The Big Ten Library E-Resource Accessibility Group thought members of this listserv might be interested to hear about the work they’ve been doing with library e-resource accessibility. [Title: Big Ten Academic Alliance Logo] Libraries in the Big Ten Academic Alliance are committed to equitable service and access for all and are therefore concerned about the inaccessibility of many library electronic resources. In 2015, a Big Ten Library E-Resource Accessibility Group was formed to address these concerns through collective strategies and direct engagement with vendors. In its first 2 years, the group has made significant progress by: ● Adopting model accessibility license language that can be found on the Big Ten’s Standardized Accessibility License Language page. This language may be used or modified by any library to ensure that electronic resources contracts address accessibility. ● Funding professional accessibility evaluations of selected vendor platforms. Evaluations, and any responses provided by vendors, are posted on the Big Ten’s E-Resources Testing page. This program provides vendors with the information and opportunity to improve their accessibility and gives the library community information about the accessibility of these resources, increasing transparency and action in this area. Updates will continue to be posted on the Big Ten’s website, Library E-Resource Accessibility. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: More context and an update about Panopto and 3Play Media - * Sometimes when a device is switched (main camera to document camera), there is a snag. This snag prevents the entire video from being sent to 3Play. Like if the main camera was used for 10 mins, then a doc camera was used for 20 mins, Panopto only sends 3Play the first 10 mins to be captioned. This is a problem because the entire video is not being captured. o A snag is also created when a video is edited (like when a professor inserts a splice from another Panopto video). This is a bug. * In Panopto, you can set automatic captioning. You have a folder in Panopto. You set it to automatically send all videos that are uploaded to that folder, to 3Play Media to be captioned. However, the videos end up in one folder in 3Play and it makes it hard to distinguish BIOL course videos from MATH course videos and so on. 3Play Media does allow you to create different projects, to help keep the financials straight. For example, I have a Seattle Project, Tacoma Project, and Bothell Project, to keep the videos separated by campus. But we can't really organize videos using that system without manually re-naming and moving individual videos into folders that you created and named manually. Thus, we asked that Panopto create a mechanism where we can choose which project and folder when we upload a video. This is to help with reporting and to keep our budget people happy as we try to determine who pays what portion of the bill. This feedback was shared with the Panopto team today. They shared that these issues will be fixed hopefully by June 2018, if not sooner. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi all, Another "bug" we've discovered with Panopto: If you create a new folder for a course (for example, for the new semester), mark the folder for Automatic captioning, then move files from an old semester folder into the new folder, files are not sent out automatically for captioning. You can still request captions manually but that can get a bit tedious when you have over 80 videos. Another feature we are working with Panopto on is to have captioning requests tied to a user account at some level. Once you have 3Play tied to Panopto, that integration exists for all users, thus the need to determine which 3Play account to charge based on user account in Panopto. For example, Disability Resources captions for accommodation purposes. However, there are other units on campus wanting to caption course content to provide access for all students, especially students with English as another language, since the courses are part of a micro-campus provided in China. Since these captioning requests are not tied to disability services/accommodation requests, they need to be paid from a different account. Disability services doesn't want to get into the "billing departments" business... My understanding is that this feature is coming soon as well. Keep up the collaboration! So while you are not a counselor, he should be increased to avail himself of alternate techniques for those times when he can't count on his vision. While colleges and universities may be able to be somewhat flexible, employers can not do so easily, you can't pause things for a day or a week. If so that'd help. If not a specific one is recommended then the student may want to try a few. For Java for example, Eclipse, IntelliJ, NetBeans... For C++ I'd think Microsoft Visual Studio is hard to beat. An IDE has many features to make things easier such as automatically laying out a template for a complex project, predicting what you may want next (like an auto-fil dropdown list you can click a name instead of typing the whole thing.) Some have snippets (or similar name) where you can save blocks of code you personally use a lot for quick copy and paste. No IDE will eliminate all typing but good ones are designed to make a developer's life easier. All of them will have some learning curve though to find the most efficiency-gaining features. Much of modern-day programming consists of reusing code, which is kind of the point of object-oriented programming. Of course, he will need to type a lot but if he will be using an IDE (integrated Development Environment) these tools automate many functions. I would figure out what the class will be using, but Eclipse is a popular IDE for Java development. For C++ they may use Microsoft Visual C++.net. SSD folks input is essential because they are the most knowledgeable about the ADA, 508 and can share the impact on our students when IT is not accessible. Our Associate Dean for Student Support Programs (including SSD) was very involved in the Policy & Procedures creation process for the same reasons. Creating an accessible (IT) campus is a responsibility for everyone because it touches almost every area of what we do and, happily, our campus has embraced the work. During our Opening Week this year, most of our workgroup members jointly presented an overview of the new policy, background on the legal aspects, etc. Hope this is helpful! Disability services offices along with many other campus units (e.g., risk management, online learning, teaching and learning centers, student services?) should be engaged in the campus-wide efforts as well. We do this in several ways at the University of Washington. I co-direct an IT Accessibility Task Force that includes representatives from multiple units across the UW, including branch campuses. We also engage about 100 IT Accessibility Liaisons from many units on campus to help promote the development, procurement and use of accessible IT in their areas of influence. We provide training to these folks and others campus-wide (e.g., at the web developers monthly meetings, at the online instructors sig). Sometimes training is co-sponsored by a relevant campus unit. The biggest distinction we make about the provision of accessible IT campus wide between our disability services offices (we have one for students and one for faculty/staff/visitors) and our Accessible Technology Services is that disability service units provide accommodations for individuals with disabilities who use them, and this might include remediating PDFs, captioning videos, etc., for specific individuals. We work proactively to make IT accessible, usable, and inclusive campus-wide. We, for example, offer limited free captioning of high-impact academic and administrative videos; disability services steps in and captions videos when there is a need for a accommodation for a specific person. We work to reduce the number of inaccessible PDFs on campus; disability services remediates inaccessible PDFs for which specific individuals with disabilities need access. You also get to rate the transcriber after each job, so I at least feel like I?m able to give feedback on the quality easily (although to be fair I?m not sure how that rating is acted upon internally). My informal assessment is that accuracy is at least on par with the other vendors if not slightly better. They also have (in my view) the most usable caption editor of any of the vendors we?ve used, plus it offers some neat features like vertical caption placement that you can?t get from the others without an upcharge. There are still specific use cases under which I?ll use each of our 3 caption vendors, but given the price and turnaround time, Rev is currently my go-to for a standard captioning request. My informal assessment is that accuracy is at least on par with the other vendors if not slightly better. They also have (in my view) the most usable caption editor of any of the vendors we?ve used, plus it offers some neat features like vertical caption placement that you can?t get from the others without an upcharge.
