Hi all,

Another "bug" we've discovered with Panopto:
If you create a new folder for a course (for example, for the new semester), mark the folder for Automatic captioning, then move files from an old semester folder into the new folder, files are not sent out automatically for captioning. You can still request captions manually but that can get a bit tedious when you have over 80 videos.

Another feature we are working with Panopto on is to have captioning requests tied to a user account at some level. Once you have 3Play tied to Panopto, that integration exists for all users, thus the need to determine which 3Play account to charge based on user account in Panopto. For example, Disability Resources captions for accommodation purposes. However, there are other units on campus wanting to caption course content to provide access for all students, especially students with English as another language, since the courses are part of a micro-campus provided in China. Since these captioning requests are not tied to disability services/accommodation requests, they need to be paid from a different account. Disability services doesn't want to get into the "billing departments" business... My understanding is that this feature is coming soon as well.

More context and an update about Panopto and 3Play Media -


  *   Sometimes when a device is switched (main camera to document camera), there is a snag. This snag prevents the entire video from being sent to 3Play. Like if the main camera was used for 10 mins, then a doc camera was used for 20 mins, Panopto only sends 3Play the first 10 mins to be captioned. This is a problem because the entire video is not being captured.
     *   A snag is also created when a video is edited (like when a professor inserts a splice from another Panopto video). This is a bug.
  *   In Panopto, you can set automatic captioning. You have a folder in Panopto. You set it to automatically send all videos that are uploaded to that folder, to 3Play Media to be captioned. However, the videos end up in one folder in 3Play and it makes it hard to distinguish BIOL course videos from MATH course videos and so on. 3Play Media does allow you to create different projects, to help keep the financials straight. For example, I have a Seattle Project, Tacoma Project, and Bothell Project, to keep the videos separated by campus. But we can't really organize videos using that system without manually re-naming and moving individual videos into folders that you created and named manually. Thus, we asked that Panopto create a mechanism where we can choose which project and folder when we upload a video. This is to help with reporting and to keep our budget people happy as we try to determine who pays what portion of the bill.

This feedback was shared with the Panopto team today. They shared that these issues will be fixed hopefully by June 2018, if not sooner.
