The help text was required because the screen reader will go into forms mode, and it would only read the help text in each form field, not the text outside of the fields. Best practice is to repeat the question in each form field, along with what the form field is. For example the first form text box would have the help text of '1. How much do you earn each year? 2017', the second text box would have the '1. How much do you earn each year? 2016', etc. Is this still the case if a screen reader user is using the latest version of NVDA/JAWS and Word 2016? I am using a fast insider version of Word 2016 and did a very quick test with NVDA and JAWS and found that they read the questions, as well as the help text in the form items. Does one still have to repeat the question in each form item? Or is that outdated advice? Oh and can anyone tell me if Dragon uses the help text as well? WCAG 2.0 makes an exception when users are on a secure site and opening an external link in the same window will disrupt the session. But what about the other way around? Libraries deal with this all over their websites because of the various protected resources we offer (i.e. databases). So my question: If a user is on a website and they're clicking into a protected resource (requires login), is it better to open in the same window or a new tab? In this situation, using the back button doesn't work as expected (you have to double click quickly to get back to the website if it you just logged in) and it starts a new session if the user navigates back into to that same protected resource (the user doesn't haven't to log in again, but it starts a new session). I'm having to incorporate that into my job. Presently, faculty pick and choose videos or movies they want to show in their classes with little regard for accessibility. They record their own using various tools, they borrow dvd's from the library, they utilize Youtube links, etc. They do not vet them as far as I know. I would like to be able to tighten up the process by creating a form for them to fill out to get their videos captioned. I would hope they could provide proof of ownership or permissions so I don't get in trouble for copyright infringement. We are looking at using CaptionSync and/or AMAC for doing the actual work. We are currently making it easier for faculty to record their own videos which may mean we will have even more to deal with in the next semester. If anyone has a system in place, a form, a vetting process or just some advice, please pass it my way. I'm starting from scratch. Thanks so much. A unit can apply to have us create captions on a high impact video by following the process at the videos link on our website at www.uw.edu/accessibility. Sometimes we do the captions ourselves, but most of the time we pay for them through a state-wide contract with 3PlayMedia. Our process is efficient. People can apply at any time by filling out a web survey. We make an approval decision within a day or two and create the captions in a short period of time. We use this process to promote captioning so we continue to communicate with funding recipients about the multiple ways they can caption future videos. In alt-text production if the student wants/needs an (accessible) e-pub text, our conversion steps include putting ALL of the metadata into the word doc and converting through CALIBRE to an epub or other e-book output. This allows a copy saved as MSW document with metadata, and a CALIBRE-converted epub book with metadata. In the case of alt-text conversion, the question of covering copyright info is imbedded in the metadata if we do it this way (ISBN, title, author, publisher, copyright date, edition, etc.). A couple of extra reasons to include it, not just for google searching, but for student searching within the book as well. Is it required for accessibility? No. Does it make it easier or searcher to find the correct version of the book? Yes. Additionally, it helps fulfill a copyright notice as well. Hope this small contribution is useful. We have a student with a recent arm injury who is a language major and happens to be taking a French and Spanish course this term, and needs to use speech recognition to keep up on his coursework. Since the student has a MacBook, it's not clear to me on the Nuance site if both French and Spanish are available for Mac users. The student will also need the English version, so we're needing to get him access to speech recognition software for all three languages. One thought is to have the student use either BootCamp or Parallels for the software in one of the other languages, but if that does work, then we still have an issue with the third language. I've submitted this query to Nuance Support, but I've not always received prompt responses from them in the past, so I thought I'd check with the folks on the ATHEN listserv as well. Any advice/guidance is much appreciated! We are transitioning from Tegrity to Kaltura for lecture capture. Some of the Tegrity videos had been captioned via 3Play. I would now like to move some of these videos into Kaltura just so we don't have too many variations for students within Canvas. (and because the Kaltura videos are searchable) Kaltura is using the Cielo24 captioning on the backend and we are either editing the captions or outsourcing. I'd like to be able to download the SRT file from Tegrity and upload it into Kaltura. Sounds easy enough, but upon closer inspection, the SRT files do not have the same formatting and therefore does not render the captions in the Kaltura video player. We'd like to keep everything within Kaltura such that we can post videos in the Media Gallery which makes them easily searchable. See SRT example below: Tegrity 2 00:02:22.2500000 --> 00:02:24.2550000 Anybody have any questions before we start? Other 2 00:02:22,250 --> 00:02:24,255 Anybody have any questions before we start? It is a little on the advanced side though using wildcards I was able to automate, again with just that one sample, to convert to: 00:02:22,250 --> 00:02:24,255 Here is what I did. (Remember to have a copy of the file so you don't potentially destroy your original!) Again opening the file as a plain text in Microsoft Word, I started the Find & Replace. I enabled "Use Wildcards" (using this page as my reference in the past ) the following inputs: Find what: *([0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}).([0-9]{3})[0-9]{1,}* Replace with: *\1,\2* The above explained: Parenthesis tells Microsoft Word to remember what is found in the enclosed statements. Each segment remembered will be in the order of \1, \2, and so on. First saved set looks for a set of ##:##:## Note the period is outside the parenthesis as it will discard that Second saved set looks for 3 numbers directly after the period Capture (but subsequently discard) anything that follows after the three digits after the period. Replace with the following: saved set 1. Insert comma. Insert saved set 2 While highly unlikely...but it checks the whole document indiscriminately. So if somehow that exact format shows up in the captions, it will get changed if you were to commit to a "Replace All". The chances of it showing up in regular text is generally low I'd imagine. Anyways hope you don't have to resort to such but it is a potential option and people are able to suggest something easier. -Paul Nguyen On Fri, Oct 13, 2017 at 12:19 PM, Bourbeau, Maureen < Maureen.Bourbeau@unh.edu> wrote: > Happy Friday all, > > I have a question that is a bit in the weeds, but I?m sure at least a > couple of you might have a good solution or recommendation. You *can* purchase either the French or the Spanish version of Dragon NS. When using either one, the program can switch back & forth from French or Spanish to English, but the user must stop and switch to a different voice profile each time. The speech dictation between languages is not seamless. According to Nuance, you cannot have more than one version of the DNS loaded at the same time ?i.e., not possible to install French with English, and Spanish with English into the same OS as the voice profiles and the load sequences are stored on the same path. It IS possible to set up parallel OS on a partitioned HD, with one language loaded into one OS, and the other loaded into the second partitioned OS. I have done this with more than just dictation software ?I have had daisy-chained OS set up in separate languages to do typesetting & design work in multiple foreign languages. It is also feasible to purchase DNS 15.0 Professional ($$) and get the capability of dictating in various languages with the primary operating (command) language being English. The downside to this is that the user has to create separate profiles for each of the languages (Wink-English, Wink-Spanish, Wink-French) and stop to switch voice profiles each time you need to insert a word or phrase in the desired other language, then switch profile back to continue working. I did not purchase DNS 15.0 Professional, only the Individual Professional version, so the language switching for me in DNS 15.0 IP was not quite as easy as outlined above. I have tried using the French/English version and the Spanish/English versions and having to switch user profiles every time I wanted to switch languages as I dictated became too much of an interruption for me. Yes, even for me! I suppose one *could* create a macro for Dragon that would switch voice profiles making the switching from French or Spanish to English and back again easier. I could not have both French and Spanish versions of DNS on the same computer. I used two different computers for this set up. Here is what I ended up doing, though. Of course because I am perverse and have way too much time on my hands (no, really it?s because I?m a geek!), I have Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and English versions of DNS, and have accumulated over the years, a HUGE vocabulary in my voice profile. And I did what Nuance said was not possible: I named my profile the same thing in each language I worked in (I was lucky and well-off ?I had different computers for each of the languages ? back in the day.?). Then I saved ALL of the different language voice profiles into one single profile that combined all of the different languages and now run DNS 15.0 Individual Professional in English, but am able to dictate in any of the other languages and the vocabulary is recognized in the target language correctly. This takes some dedicated training to do it. Your student could start with a version of DNS pro (in English) and you can load lists upon lists of French vocabulary and Spanish vocabulary, and then spend some dedicated time training the correct pronunciation of the words & accent mark placement. For example I programed the pronunciation of the names of the accent marks in each language as macros: c?dille ?, aigu (acute accent) ?, circonflexe (circumflex) ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, grave (grave accent) ?, ?, ?, and tr?ma (dieresis/umlaut) ?, ?, ?. And for Spanish, I created the pronunciation & trained DNS to recognize tilde, agudo, grave, cedilla, circumflejo, and dierisis. Another thing to keep in mind is that the French/English and the Spanish/English versions of DNS operate IN that language, not in English. So unless your student is fluent enough in those languages to manage all of the menus and commands in the target language. Also, all the install instructions are in the target language. Not a problem for me, but odds are your IT folks would need this info in English. My best professional, educated recommendation is that you try out the DNS 15.0 Professional version and have your student work on some separate voice profiles for each language. He/she can switch users via the PROFILE menu. If you do this, all the commands, including all of the punctuation STAYS IN ENGLISH, and will be less confusing to a less than proficiently fluent foreign language user. Nuance allows a 30 day trial on their software so you could purchase, let your student work diligently enough to ascertain whether it will work sufficiently well for them, and if not, you can ?return? the software for a full refund. I would recommend purchasing the disc rather than the download version. If you already have a version of Dragon installed, have your student back up (export) their voice profiles to a flash drive, as the new install will remove the previous version and finding the .dll files will be a serious headache. Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more guidance/help. I would be happy to be of whatever assistance I can. We have a student with a recent arm injury who is a language major and happens to be taking a French and Spanish course this term, and needs to use speech recognition to keep up on his coursework. Since the student has a MacBook, it's not clear to me on the Nuance site if both French and Spanish are available for Mac users. The student will also need the English version, so we?re needing to get him access to speech recognition software for all three languages. One thought is to have the student use either BootCamp or Parallels for the software in one of the other languages, but if that does work, then we still have an issue with the third language. I?ve submitted this query to Nuance Support, but I?ve not always received prompt responses from them in the past, so I thought I?d check with the folks on the ATHEN listserv as well. Any advice/guidance is much appreciated! If you are only looking at presenting a syllabus, it seems appropriate, especially if your syllabus is text only. But if you are considering "authoring accessibility," then some remediation is needed. For example, in the template you can add a 'description' in an element, such as an image. But that description does not become its accessible name [alt={description}", aria-label="{description}]. So the fallback would be unassociated text that accompanies the image. If using as a content management system, not being able to add the accessible attributes to content is serious and takes more QA work before publishing, especially if you wanted to repurpose content. Another example, using assistive tech to create the syllabus would not be 100% effective. It has some mouse dependent features. Their leadership was very interested in the feedback and seemed willing to put it on their roadmap. They also were interested in 508 adopting WCAG. They claim that their cloud-based solution "is built and tested from the ground up to support Section 508 compliance." https://www.intellidemia.com/ If anyone has used it, I'd love to know how it's going. Feel free to contact me personally instead of on-list, if you prefer. We're already using Digarc's Acalog for our course catalog and policy manuals, and I'm wondering whether Concourse would simplify the accessibility aspects of our syllabi, in a similar way. I'm especially interested in fully online courses but if that is integrated with how you support faculty for not fully online courses, that's good too. Questions 1. Does your school require any training for faculty before they teach fully/mostly online courses? If so, does the training include digital accessibility? 2. What technology staff support is available at your school for faculty who teach online courses? If there is any technology staff support, do those staff also have responsibility/knowledge of digital accessibility? If you could point me to info on this topic other than what your school does, that's appreciated too. Please feel free to reply to me at am2621@hunter.cuny.edu Thank you!! Our international conference 2018 will be held at the Clayton Hotel in Chiswick, London from Monday 25th-Wednesday 27th June 2018. It will focus on the priorities for ensuring quality provision in the field of disability support and inclusivity. We invite you to share your innovative methods, tested solutions, and proven results with an audience representing an array of countries, backgrounds and institutions. The topics include, though are not confined to: * Policy development and implementation * Enhancing the disabled student experience * Systems for evaluating Disability services e.g. measuring impact on retention, progression, achievement or employability * Aiding transition to and from higher education * Engaging the student voice * Individual or group support systems * Inclusive Practice - e.g. benchmarking, strategic implementation or evaluation * Academic Assessment and associated methodologies * Evidence based-research informed practice * Collaborative working between Disability and Inclusivity Professionals and Academics We are inviting abstracts for presentations, workshop sessions, panel discussions and posters. Message-ID: I am not remotely surprised that any "blind" student would encounter this a almost any school. The biggest impediment I have encountered in assisting students across the country is the "Arrogance and Ignorance" of the higher Ed administrations. Virtually all of them go the "compliance" route instead of the "inclusion" route which leaves huge gaps in their ability to provide accommodations. With the few number of students that are willing or able to provide a legal fight, the Risk management at the institution normally advises them to stall as long as possible. I am working with a student at a school that is on their "4th" Civil Rights complaint with the Department of Education with their particular institution. They are about to sign an agreement to rectify the third one, while the fourth one is the most egregious. It is for "retaliation" that the school engaged in against the student after the first two complaints were mitigated and resolved. Of course this is a top tier "elite" university, but drops the ball in many aspects of educating its students. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <7D15C67B-5248-4E27-B505-CAE182A6D1EE@contoso.com> Good morning, Has anyone come across (or developed) a rubric that can be used to evaluate the accessibility of library resources and related academic content? I am developing a workshop for faculty that will teach them how to find and then evaluate library and external resources for use in their online and face to face courses. I?ve looked at a few rubrics to evaluate OER objects, but that?s not quite what I was looking for. I can develop one but wondered if others were doing anything similar and if there were any templates already out there that might serve as a starting point. Thanks for any ideas.
