[Athen] Has MS updated Office for Mac for accessibility

I cannot speak totally to the whole Office suite, but, the publically available current Word 2016 (version 15.39 170829) does indeed have an accessibility checker (in the review tab) that allows the document to be scanned for common issues like missing headings, missing alt text, missing header rows, etc. A report is then generated and the user is told why the issue needs to be corrected. Just to be clear, accessible formatting does not happen automatically – the user still has to format the document using appropriate heading styles, distinguishable hyperlinks, alt text, etc.

ALSO – when an “accessible” Word document is saved as a PDF, there is still work to be done on the Acrobat Pro side (such as setting document language, title, tagging, etc.)

However, this checker is a great addition for Mac users.

Hello All:

I've heard from a very reliable source that you can now run the Office
accessibility checker (as per the Windows version) for Word and PowerPoint
and create accessible PDFs from Word and PPT for the MAC.

I'll need to change some online content if this is the case and since I
don't work much in the Mac environment I just wanted to verify that this is
the case.

Thanks,
Howard

HI Howard,

We have been collaborating with Microsoft Office group as well as their Mac Outlook team. All the points you mentioned have been in our issue list and they are indeed working on them. We are on the insider release and don?t know if all THOSE ENHANCEMENTS MADE TO THE PUBLIC VERSION YET.
Let me verify those features with my students and I will let you know.

Thanks,
Hadi

It looks like it is in an Insider version but am not sure when this was written. I thought it had been released but then I'm on the Insider Fast track.

The latest version of Office for Mac available on our campus has an accessibility checker in the Review ribbon. Not sure if it has been improved recently, but it has existed for at least a few months.

It looks like it is in an Insider version but am not sure when this was written. I thought it had been released but then I'm on the Insider Fast track.

Hello All:

I've heard from a very reliable source that you can now run the Office accessibility checker (as per the Windows version) for Word and PowerPoint and create accessible PDFs from Word and PPT for the MAC.

I'll need to change some online content if this is the case and since I don't work much in the Mac environment I just wanted to verify that this is the case.

Thanks,
Howard

Agreed, Rachel. I've got v 15.36 on my Mac in my office, and the
Accessibility Checker is available in the Review ribbon.

It could still use some work, especially if you're going to push documents
through that to PDF. However, it's much better than nothing and has been
really helpful in trying to get campus to think about accessible document
design!

Hi Heidi,

In general NVDA has fewer application-specific commands/configs than some
other screenreaders. So mainly we would use the Outlook built-in keyboard
commands + the regular NVDA nav commands. Some NVDA features for Word will
work for Outlook if Word is set as the editor (obviously that doesn't help
much with the Calendar).

There are a couple of Outlook improvements listed in the What's New for
NVDA 2017.3 (such as the Appointment datepicker). Hopefully that will be
useful. I haven't tested recently (primarily use Gmail.)

Otherwise, I previously found NVDA to have some problems moving around the
Ribbon system. Although I also was sometimes baffled by the Outlook 2016
Ribbons using Jaws as well. ...

All best,
Patrick

Hello,
Does anyone know who to contact at Facebook Workplace to request a VPAT?
If you are using Facebook Workplace, did you test for accessibility before using the product?
If you tested Facebook Workplace for accessibility, and you found issues, who at Facebook could you contact for help? Were they responsive to your requests, if contacted?
Thank you in advance for any info.

Sincerely,

Lisa M. Caid, B.S.
