Subject: [PPAT-friends] ATHack 2018: Call for Co-designers!

Dear friends,

My name is Ishwarya (I'm sure many of you know me by now!) and I'm currently a PhD student at MIT. For the past several years, I have been involved with Assistive Technology efforts here in few different ways, from helping to teach to our design class to organizing the annual hackathon. Thanks to many of you, the hackathon has been an incredibly meaningful experience over the past several years (check out the article<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__news.mit.edu_2017_mit-2Dstudents-2Dhack-2Dassistive-2Dtechnology-2Dsolutions-2Dfor-2Dlocal-2Dclients-2D0612&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=3pRIsq3Pd5AtfyALJNcc9pC2vmnzfxHCDaVjz2NMIe8&m=Zmx9Uhglvc3hu4ov4NJSNAdGaa4-tr9VySYJdSl8zz0&s=qI97K2h8Ct4OaxMvLPMQU--9K5_C1p-nCQ7Hu1nPOw8&e=> and video<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.youtube.com_watch-3Fv-3DPEW-2DeqRvARg-26feature-3Dyoutu.be&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=3pRIsq3Pd5AtfyALJNcc9pC2vmnzfxHCDaVjz2NMIe8&m=Zmx9Uhglvc3hu4ov4NJSNAdGaa4-tr9VySYJdSl8zz0&s=YJb2yvmO7lHAKCOjVkFyoT7T62FCn_QJPOryWms3OJs&e=> that MIT produced about the event if you haven’t already!) As you might have guessed, it's now time to get ready for this year’s hackathon, ATHack 2018!

We're wondering whether you or anyone you know would be interested in participating as a co-designer! We're looking for approximately ten co-designers who have a problem in mind. This could be anything from something you are unable to do, to an activity you would like to make easier, or even a passion that you are unable to pursue. Teams of students, comprised of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and computer scientists, will be matched to co-designers. Over the course of the hackathon, each team will try to develop a solution that addresses the need presented by its co-designer.

The schedule of the hackathon is roughly as follows:

On the evening of February 13th, 2018, we will host a dinner in which co-designers will introduce themselves and describe a problem that they wish to solve. Students will form teams, and each team will begin to brainstorm ideas with its co-designer.

On Saturday, March 3rd, 2018, students will create their prototype assistive technology solutions. In the evening, we will invite the co-designers back for dinner and to try out the students' creations!

Because this is a 2-day event, we do not expect all teams to create workable products. However, we do expect each team to connect with its co-designer, work together with that co-designer to understand his/her situation, and develop at minimum a concept or early prototype assistive technology solution for that individual. We hope that with your help, we can raise awareness at MIT and inspire more students here to develop assistive technologies in the future.

If you are interested in participating as a co-designer at the hackathon this February, please fill out this form before January 28th, 2018 so that we can learn more about you and your ideas: (https://goo.gl/forms/Iv8wL8QuoRdR9mcp2<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__goo.gl_forms_Iv8wL8QuoRdR9mcp2&d=DwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=3pRIsq3Pd5AtfyALJNcc9pC2vmnzfxHCDaVjz2NMIe8&m=Zmx9Uhglvc3hu4ov4NJSNAdGaa4-tr9VySYJdSl8zz0&s=wSXopSZgT0FB7YWd26CM76Fdwmq8AQU4EupzcWMvUZQ&e=>). Our student team will review responses and respond to you within a few days, so please stay tuned! Feel free to reach out to us at at-hack-team at mit.edu<mailto:at-hack-team at mit.edu> if you would like us to provide this questionnaire in an alternate format, or with any questions you may have.

Thank you for your time,
Ishwarya, on behalf of the ATHack Team
