Ah, the subjective/subjunctive rules. We don't often recognize them in
English and don't use them correctly. The rules on the use of the
subjunctive verb tenses often rely on dependent clauses to trip them off:
if/then clauses. "If I were (past subjunctive) president, I would
(conditional) would speak in whole sentences."
