The suit claims that changes in the processing manual are incongruent with OCR's mission and neglect its obligation to investigate complaints of disability and race-based discrimination in the nation's schools. Denise Marshall, executive director of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates said that the new case processing manual released last March has summarily eliminated substantive rights of students.; "With this arbitrary and capricious action OCR has abandoned its basic duty to investigate legitimate complaints of discrimination by students with disabilities and their parents." The U.S. Department of Education has stated that the changes are necessary to effectively manage limited resources by allowing OCR to dismiss complaints if they're part of a pattern of similar complaints filed by an individual or a group. "This is intended to permit OCR to remain active in every type of discrimination subject matter while retaining discretion to engage in technical assistance efforts where appropriate," Hill said. inntended to permit OCR to remain active in every type of discrimination subject matter while retaining discretion to engage in technical assistance efforts where appropriate," Denise Hill said. Hello, First, I really enjoy absorbing the knowledge and input from the various accessibility groups - so, thank you for that. However, as I sit in on these groups and learn more about their work I've realized I'm not yet finding clarity on how they fit in/contribute to the larger ecosystem of accessibility in higher edu. I'm hoping some of you can help paint that picture for me or point me to resources I may be overlooking. The groups I'm familiar with include: * EDUCAUSE Accessibility Constituent Group * IMS Global Accessibility ILN * AHEAD * ATHEN * WCET Are there any others I'm missing? I guess my questions can be broken down as: * Which roles are most represented in each group? * How do you distinguish which group is most relevant to your work? * Do the groups communicate with one another/track initiatives in order to prevent duplication or leverage previous work? Do initiatives ever merge to form a larger level workgroup or are the boundaries here strictly enforced given the sponsoring bodies? * If only picking one, which group would be most relevant to someone new(er) to the field of accessible technology in higher ed? (And yes, there are probably different answers depending on the person's role and scope of work, but imagine if the person had to wear every accessibility hat on campus -- as is the case for many of our smaller colleges.) * Are there other spaces for developing communities of practice if someone was looking for a venue to foster great collaboration on projects? I'm happy to collect input and pair it with more research if others would also benefit from having some sort of clearly defined "eco-system" from which to present to folks entering/navigating the field. Maybe this could be picked up as a roundtable at Accessing Higher Ground as I know others have approached me with similar questions. (Or maybe the full eco-system hasn't developed and that's why I'm feeling a little disjointed. In which case, I'll try to be more patient. ?) Thanks for your continued guidance and input! The tag RO (Tag panel) or the architectural/construction RO (Order panel)? There are situations where the Tag reading order will be changed in Acrobat. 1. If the architectural/construction Order is changed, the tag tree will also be changed in most cases. 2. If the Autotag utility in the latest Adobe Acrobat is used, it will re-evaluate the tag tree and retag it as well as change its reading order. 3. If you cut/paste items into the PDF (but you really shouldn't be editing a tagged PDF to begin with). 4. If pages are added into an existing tagged PDF. (It can be done, but carefully.) In InDesign, the tag RO following the story threads so moving text frames, cutting and pasting, and anchored objects will change the RO. The Articles panel can affect the RO, too. And the layers panel controls the architectural/construction RO, so arranging front-to-back and other stacking order tasks will change that RO. It's being planned that I'll be teaching an all-day pre-conference workshop on InDesign and Accessibility at this fall's Accessing Higher Ground conference. I love using them to create accessible business cards. I emboss the braille onto the Embossables, cut them out, and stick them to the back of the cards. They send their content overseas for remediation. Ask to see their corporate information, such as listing in D&B or a state or federal government registry/database. Some true American companies send content overseas, too. So define that your content must not be transmitted outside the US, if that's what you want. And you must define what standard you want your documents to comply with (such as PDF/UA-1), and additional features you want for your college, and how many tests must be passed for the file to be accessible. Hint: just passing the internal Adobe Acrobat Pro DC accessibility checker isn't enough (it misses quite a few items). A good checklist is published by HHS at https://www.hhs.gov/web/section-508/making-files-accessible/checklist/pdf/in dex.html Also ask for a guarantee/warrantee on the documents; that is, if an accessibility error is found within X months of delivery, the contractor will correct it at no additional cost to you. Of course, if you want to make edits to the document, that will be billable. -Bevi - - - Bevi Chagnon, founder/CEO | Bevi@PubCom.com - - - PubCom: Technologists for Accessible Design + Publishing consulting . training . development . design . sec. 508 services Upcoming classes at www.PubCom.com/classes - - - From: athen-list On Behalf Of Rovner, Amy Sent: Monday, June 18, 2018 1:30 PM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: [Athen] PDF remediation service recommendations? For the California Community Colleges and all those who are already part of the Alternate Media eXchange Database, we are providing another training to learn about the launch of the new AIMHub Database and receive training on the new system. Please be aware: If you are a current user of the AMX Database, it is imperative that you or a representative attend training. Once we have completed the migration to the AIMHub system, the AMX Database will be taken down. Attendees must register to receive the webinar log-in information. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. For those of you who are not currently part of the AMX Database, we will eventually be expanding the services of AIMHub. We expect to have more information in the fall on that aspect of services. You are still welcome to attend the training. We have not lost a table since I started, so this is working. That being said, it's probably just one table per semester that we are loaning out. This will help you narrow down which one might work best for you all in your situation. Keep in mind that some are designed ONLY for finding lost things inside your house (phone, keys, wallet), while others may have a short transmit range (ca. 100? or less ?not effective for what we?d need it for to track furniture I think). Some vendors charge a monthly fee for their tags. Some do not. I share this so you can make a more informed decision. https://www.podtrackers.com/blog/technology/choosing-right-type-tracker-gps-tracking-tech-explained/ If you want to, you could also attach bar-code labels to the furniture/equipment and check it out using a DB such as AIM. It can be ?checked out? to a specific room for a specified period of time, and you could narrow down location by starting with the LKL (Last Known Location). Partnering with maintenance might also help since their crews are largely responsible for taking care of seating & room layout(s). It's an Apple issue. Forms is one area where its usefulness is limited. I believe you can learn more about Voice Over's capabilities (ha ha, really, should be lack-of-capabilities) on the www.WebAim.org forum where folks post their questions and findings on accessibility tech topics like this. An option would be an HTML-based web version of the form, but I'm not sure even that would overcomes VO's shortcomings with forms. He reads braille and is very technologically savvy. He has obtained a few certifications from Cisco in IT support outside of our institution and is now enrolled here in our Web/Database Technology (AS) program. The first two terms of this program require that he takes Introduction to Networks and Routing and Switching Essentials courses which are part of the Cisco Certified Entry-level Network Technician Certification (CCENT) facilitated by an instructor here qualified to do that, but the program is entirely run through Cisco's NetAcademy. It seems that Cisco is trying hard to be as accessible as they can, but it has been this student's previous experience that Cisco's NetAcademy continues to be significantly problematic for a completely non-sighted student. I am reaching out to see if someone (or some institution) may have come across this before. I am thinking that somewhere a precedence for making these Cisco courses accessible to non-sighted students can be found. *Warm Regards,* *Kellie Sturgeon, BSN, BA, MA* *sturgek@linnbenton.edu * *~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~* Accessible Technology Specialist Center for Accessibility Resources (CFAR) Linn-Benton Community College Red Cedar Hall Rm 118 (541) 917-4865 Albany, OR 97321 "Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others." ~Cicero (106 - 43 BCE) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am not an expert in typography, but I was asked for advice on how to evaluate fonts for accessibility a while back. After researching a number of sources, I made the following recommendations. Note that I actually recommended to err on the side of less stroke thickness, because, for some fonts, if strokes are too thick it can cause features of the type to become indistinguishable for individuals with reduced acuity. I'd be interested to hear if folks think these recommendations make sense. Anyway, here they are: - Font should use consistent stroke width. Any weight changes within characters should be subtle. - Letters should have large counterforms or "counters" - Letters should have open apertures - Letters should have pronounced ascenders and descenders - Letters should have wider horizontal proportions - Letters should have ample lowercase x-heights - Font should have distinct forms for each character (such as tails on the lowercase letters ?t? and ?j?) - Font should use extended horizontal strokes for certain letterforms (such as the arm of the lowercase letter ?r? or the crossbar of the lowercase letter ?t?) - You should generally avoid scripts and decorative typestyles - Font should not use excessively light or bold weighting, but lighter is probably better. Stroke thickness of around 18% of x-height best. - Sans serif, roman (as opposed to italic or oblique), and monospaced fonts are preferable for dyslexia - If font has serifs, they should be short, bracketed, and not distracting - If font is sans serif, ensure sufficient kerning - Avoid ALL CAPS fonts *Situational factors* - Sans serif better for numerals - Condensed proportions better in cramped quarters - Sans serif better for smaller font sizes *Heuristic Testing for Font Legibility* As a simple heuristic spot check, to see how your choices might affect people with low visual acuity, try this (note, though, that people with dyslexia are also affected by font choices): Go to TypeKits (https://typekit.com/fonts/) and for each font, at 16 points, enter the character set that follows: qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm QWERTYUIOPASDFGHJKLZXCVBNM 1234567890`~!@#$%^&*()-_=+[]\{}|;?:?,./<>? Using the NoCoffee Vision Simulator for Chrome (https://chrome.google.com/ webstore/detail/nocoffee/jjeeggmbnhckmgdhmgdckeigabjfbddl?hl=en-US), set ?Blur (low acuity)? to 3, and see how well each one holds up in terms of ability to distinguish between characters, paying particular attention to filled in counters. In looking for distinctions between letters, consider the difference between the following: - I (uppercase eye), l (lowercase el) and 1 (one), - 1 (one), and 7(seven) - ! (exclamation), and i (lowercase eye) - B (uppercase bee), 8 (eight), and 9 (nine) - 3 (three), and 8 (eight) - c (lowercase see), and o (lowercase oh) - d (lowercase dee), a (lowercase aye), o (lowercase oh), and g (lowercase gee) - 0 (zero), O (uppercase oh) - g (lowercase gee), q (lowercase cue), and p (lowercase pee) - G (uppercase gee), and & (ampersand) - 5 (five), and 6 (six) - 6 (six), and G (uppercase gee) - 5 (five), and S (uppercase ess) - A (uppercase aye), R (uppercase are) *Reference* If you are unsure what any of the terms I used mean, look here: https://www.fonts.com/content/learning/fontology/level-1/ type-anatomy/anatomy The sources I drew upon and the notes I took are available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b7WeCYIkPizGbKI4G3213P_ 0U0G4vC0zdTSQO-BU7cA/edit?usp=sharing Best, Rob On Thu, Jun 21, 2018 at 9:07 PM, Gian Wild wrote: > Hi > > > > Does anyone have some research or evidence about the accessibility of > different fonts?
