Hi Susan,

The feature is definitely still available in Mojave. Here’s how to enable it:

1. Go to System Preferences

2. Choose Accessibility

3. Choose Accessibility Features

4. Choose Speech.

5. Choose the voice you wish to use. (default is Alex system voice)

6. If you wish, you can set the speaking rate here too.

7. Check “Speak selected text when a key is pressed”.
8. The default key combination is Option + Escape.

Now the student just needs to select the desired text and press Option + Escape to have the text read.

Hope this helps.

I’m still looking for a link. There isn’t a new one yet which is frustrating!

Can you post that link? I might have a general idea but it keeps falling back to VoiceOver to which you did say you're not talking about it.

When working with students with Macs, I’ve always sent them a link to the instructions for using their Macs to read short pieces, in addition to giving them Kurzweil. I met with a student today, and went to send the link I usually use, and…it’s a 404. And all my searching on google only brings up years-old instructions for using the technology.

Has Apple suddenly removed this functionality from Mac OS? I can’t believe that they would have, but it appears to be gone. Anyone have any information to say otherwise?

(I am not talking about VoiceOver)
