Spread the word! -Sheryl -------- Many postsecondary IT leaders?in part to address diversity and equity issues or to meet their campus obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and its 2008 Amendments?struggle to get IT companies to make their products accessible to individuals with disabilities. On the other hand, companies are complaining that they cannot find computing and IT professionals who know how to design accessible products. To help faculty members include accessibility topics in their classes and to help IT accessibility specialists support them in doing so, the UW?s AccessComputing project is hosting a pre-conference workshop at the 2018 Accessing Higher Ground conference: Teaching about Accessibility in Computing and IT Courses: A Capacity-building Institute Date: November 13, 2018 Location: Westin Westminster, Colorado Presenters and panelists will share how accessibility/inclusive/universal design topics can be integrated into your computing/IT course or how you can encourage faculty in these fields to include these topics in their courses. They will bring in perspectives and promising practices from the field. Discussions will be facilitated to explore key issues related to promoting the teaching of inclusive design strategies in computing and IT courses at all levels, but particularly in postsecondary environments. Resources will also be shared. For more information and to register, visit the Accessing Higher Ground website described in the following message. . It is time that I retire as the ATHEN President and allow for others to step forward and guide the organization. For those who may be interested, you would be engaging with a talented and effective Executive Council. While we have accomplished much, I know there are ATHEN members with unique ideas who can lead ATHEN in new directions for supporting access technology professionals in higher education. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I agree with Dan and Leyna on this too. Tables headings, captions, and summaries should be in any data table to make it accessible. Tables Concepts on w3.org and Creating Accessible Tables on webaim.org are very useful pages for learning about this topic. I have also found, the less table complexity, the better for screen reader users. Avoiding: nesting, merging, and multiple table headings for the same cell reduces confusion and ensures greater support. "Despite being standard markup for tables for many years, some screen readers still do not fully support complex tables with spanned or multiple levels of row and/or column headers. When possible, try to 'flatten' the table and avoid spanned cells and multiple levels of header cells." This is a simple table that should be understood by most screen readers: EXAMPLE: Concerts Date Event Venue 12 Feb Waltz with Strauss Main Hall 24 Mar The Obelisks West Wing 14 Apr The What Main Hall This is a lot more confusing and sometimes missed on some screen readers: EXAMPLE: Availability of holiday accommodation Column one has the location and size of accommodation, other columns show the type and number of properties available Studio Apt Chalet Villa Paris 1 bedroom 11 20 25 23 2 bedroom - 43 52 32 3 bedroom - 13 15 40 Rome 1 bedroom 13 21 22 3 2 bedroom - 23 43 30 3 bedroom - 16 32 40 But both are semantically correct but I find complex tables to be more cumbersome and less supported by screen readers. We encounter these types of tables within a course syllabus or with bookstore orders and the easiest solution is taking the first column as a caption or heading. I would like to get some opinion on this. > Providing a grouping and a label for radio buttons and checkboxes has two purposes: differentiating the options from other groups of radio buttons/ checkboxes and also to provide context to them. Generally, the label for each radio button/ checkbox is specific to the individual control, but the controls themselves are part of a *set* of controls. Therefore, the set of controls will often have a label. That label should be available programmatically in a way that will be associated with the controls within the set. So even if there aren't other sets of controls on the page, the fieldset & legend are helpful in providing that context around what the set of controls are all about. Artificial intelligence used to be all about the distance future, but it has now become mainstream. It is already impacting us in ways we may not recognize. It is impacting us today already. I have student workers who work on videos (and word, ppt, and pdf files) For videos they upload them to Youtube and set the videos to private and allow YouTube to autocaption them. I would say these days, and depending on the faculty member, the videos are coming in at 85-90% accuracy, the students then correct the captions, and add audio descriptions if possible, and if not possible they compile info per video which we share with the faculty member to potentially fix later. We then provide the faculty member with the caption file, a transcript file, and notes if it needs audio description. In doing this the cost is about $.41 a minute. The cheapest commercial option we have available comes in at $1.00 per minute. Vance Vance S. Martin, Ph.D.?? I?d be curious to hear people?s thoughts on automated captioning, any success stories (or cautionary tales), cost/benefit analyses between automated and outsourced captioning, and especially what degree of accuracy would be sufficient (and is currently achievable) for such tools. I look forward to your thoughts on this. Todd T.M. Your response has definitely cleared things up for me. My understanding is if a developer follow the WCAG standards and WAI-ARIA best practice then there should not be any issues with contents when it comes to using different AT, such as JAWS and NVDA. Is this correct? The reason brought this question to the community is due to a response I had received from a vendor. When I brought some code such as the one in the original attached image and invalid ARIA codes, they said they had to modify or engineer the code in order for it to work with JAWS specifically. I didn?t believe them to begin with, but it seems they were adamant about their coding practices. Is this correct? In general, meeting the WCAG success criteria and following WAI-ARIA best practices should result in content that is functional with assistive technologies, such as JAWS and NVDA. That said, which browser is being used can have an impact on the actual user experience and so it is important to conduct manual testing to ensure the implemented code solution is indeed usable by an individual. >From my perspective, this means - follow the standards to develop/design the user interface and then perform manual testing using the assistive technology+browser combinations that are expected in the real world. If there are situations where the user experience fails (e.g., the screen-reader+browser combination do not result in an equivalent user experience), then you may need to try other combinations to evaluate if the code is the problem or if there is a bug with the AT product and/or browser. But what should not happen - and this is what usually does happen - is that a specific AT+browser combination is decided upon in advance and then the user interface is written to specifically address that AT+browser combination. To developers and uninformed QA and Product Managers, everything "sounds good" and so the solution is considered "accessible." The difficulty is that to those developing such applications, the fact that the code works with JAWS = accessible and that is just not the reality. Granted, there may be some specific situations in which you do have to create customized solutions...but with the use case you have identified with the labeling of form controls, both the native HTML solutions and WAI-ARIA techniques can result in code that is broadly accessible across multiple screen-reader and browser combinations. Starting with accessibility standards instead selecting a specific AT+browser combination (and then only building around that combo), can result in a more accessible product overall. AT is no different here. It is also inevitable that there will be cases where there is an inconsistency between how things should work and how they do work, with respect to a browser or AT's implementation of standards. If anything, this proves the need to code to the standard. For instance, if the AT has a bug or has implemented something wrong, when they later go to fix it they will do so according to standard. > > The reason brought this question to the community is due to a response I had received from a vendor.
