While "some" progress has been made on improving their accessibility since they were introduced with Office 2007, they remain mostly inaccessible. One other issue that we often encounter with Content Controls is getting stuck in them and not being able to get out, or inadvertently leaving a Content Control without notification so we are typing in thin air. There is a keyboard command to access the drop-down list: Alt + Shift + F12 and then use Spacebar to expand the menu. BUT JAWS does not announce that focus has moved to the arrow for the drop-down nor do you hear anything that tells you that the list is visible once you press Spacebar. You just have to use the Up and Down Arrows and have faith that what you are hearing and navigating through is the drop-down list. Also, once you leave one of the Content Controls on the first page using Tab, it is difficult to find them again. If I ask JAWS for a list of objects in the document, there are a mix of Text Boxes which seem to be used for captions on images and images with no Alt Text. Captions would only be in a Text Box if Text Wrapping is used and the images are not inline.but the first example of a Text Box containing a Caption is an image that spans the page from margin to margin so there is no need for Text Wrapping. If you use Ctrl + Shift + letter O with JAWS, you'll get this list of objects in the document. You hear things like "rectangle," "shape," Text Box" and "Picture." As with the Content Controls, while there has been progress made in the accessibility of Text Boxes, they are not fully accessible and the current versions of screen readers and Text-to-Speech come across them in a hit and miss manner.sometimes we can get focus to them automatically as we come across them but most often not. And both the improved accessibility of the Content Controls and Text Boxes is NOT backward compatible! You must be using the current version of Office 365/Office 2016 or later subscription in order to take advantage of these improvements. So if a student begins working on this template in a current version of Office 365 subscription and wants to work on it at home or on a laptop with an earlier version of Office, they will not have access to any of the accessibility improvements in the Content Controls or Text Boxes. .and as you can see, the improved accessibility isn't quite there yet for daily use of either of these elements. If someone gets a list of form controls in the document, included in the list are the fields for the Tables of Content, Figures, Tables, and page numbers but not the Content Controls so this method of finding them and putting focus in them is not usable. In terms of educating students, it was something I demonstrated to them when we met for an assistive technology and/or alternate media assessment. We noted that it was intended for "quick services" but it may or may not be fully accurate as much of the OCR accuracy was dependent on the submitted file. We also had a website and short overview of the tool. We positioned it initially as a tool for students to obtain converted documents or audio files as not all students had powerful machines that could run the latest AT software or handle OCR applications seamlessly. So, we wanted to provide a solution in which it did not matter if a student had a lower end system, they could still get quality OCR for a document or offload any text-to-audio conversions. A number of students would also upgrade their computers as soon as a new OS version came out and that could break some AT solutions. The Sensus Access tool was nice because it offered a platform-independent solution to getting materials in an alternate format. There was also a side-benefit for faculty in that the system could convert old PDF documents faculty had into MS Word or text-based PDFs. Yes, there may need to be a bit of clean-up, but it made it MUCH easier to do that clean-up than to try and recreate the whole document again. Also, we could also focus on providing guidance on how to creating accessible MS Word documents and then refer people to the Sensus Access tool to convert that document into many different formats (ePub, tagged PDF, audio, DAISY, etc.). One of the parts that I really tried to communicate to all users was that it was a "garbage in-garbage out" model in that if you uploaded something that was a very poor scan or of highly complex layout, then the system would likely not deliver you the results you wanted (particularly if you tried to go from scanned image directly to MP3). This was an important aspect to communicate to upper management as it was NEVER intended to replace the alt format production program, but rather augment and support students who needed something "right now." Students live a 24x7 life when at an institution, but alt media programs are not always open that many hours. One thing that I felt was very cool about the tool is that we could get metrics on how the system was being used (not sure if that is still available). But it really helped me understand what formats students tended to use more than others. Hope this helps. Take care, Sean On Wed, Apr 3, 2019 at 10:41 AM Melanie P. I used to be able to have the title of the document converted to PDF and have the initial view set to Document title but now, only the Microsoft conversion tool is doing both of these, the Adobe one is doing neither?forgot to mention that second part in my original post. What is troubling is that things that used to be there when using the Adobe conversion tool like document title, initial view set to Document title and primary language are no longer there and I have to ?fix? those things in the resulting PDF. Our approach is not very modern, but I believe it is secure as any enterprise e-mail server can be. We are looking at AIM currently, so that would change some of our practices and allow for a different method of electronic delivery. As far as Google Drive and OneDrive go, they are only as secure as the account they are linked to. I keep Alternate Formats on OneDrive, and create a separate folder to deliver textbooks (because the state-run secure file delivery system I was given is unpredictable and often students can't access their files). With electronic exams, we store them on a USB flashdrive when a computer is required (for Kurzweil or a screen reader usually), and I format the drive after each use. If I need to store an exam for any reason I keep the file on my workstation computer and e-mail to the professor. With the perceived security of data on "the cloud" I am not so sure it's a better solution than an institution's networked storage. If your Microsoft or Google accounts were compromised (both companies are susceptible to phishing or worse attacks, even with 2FA), a motivated ne'er-do-well could potentially obtain the exams. It would be much more difficult to get them from the networked storage run by your IT department. Now for your final question: OneDrive allows you to share the folder and choose who has permission to edit (which includes deletion of files). I think that will also limit who can upload and change files, but they should be able to view and download files. Hope all of this helps. We are thinking of moving to OneDrive using shared folders, but are not sure how secure OneDrive is. We would like to get away from using USB sticks completely. Is anyone using OneDrive for exams? Yes, we are a little concerned about cloud-based storage options. That's why we remove the exams from Google Drive and move them to our network drive each morning. We are using Office 365, which gives us access to OneDrive, so we are in the process of exploring that as an option, but not sure if that's much more secure than Google Drive. As far as alternate formats go, we use WeTransfer to send electronic (PDF) formats of textbooks to students. We like it because we get an email saying our files have been sent, and another when the student downloads the files. Thanks again Neal! My understanding is that ReadSpeaker is embedded on your web site, not on the user?s computer, to give your site text to speech functionality. In other words, one does not replace the other. I had two documents that are forms which means a lot of underline and boxes to visually represent where you enter information. When I used the Acrobat Pro DC (current release/update) ability to auto tag the documents, about 85% of the lines, boxes and bits of the background were tagged as requiring Alt Text and only about 15% of the actual text was tagged. When I deleted the Tags, went to Nuance's PowerPDF and retagged the document, NONE of the background bits, lines or boxes were tagged. ONLY the text on the page was tagged. I had minimal remediation to make the text of the forms accessible (mostly rearranging the question order and separating parts of a question to fit the form controls in). This saved me hours of work I was facing in making most of the things in the Tags Tree Artifacts manually and trying to manually Tag the text in the forms. Nuance PowerPDF does have a Forms Ribbon but I am on a deadline so will try it out once this project is finished. Foxit is trying to get me to not give up on their product but I really can't face another 2-5 days of lost time trying to gain control of my computer, so we are still talking about getting my money back. Their position is that everything I've experienced should not be happening with their software. BTW, for those of you who are either trying or buying Nuance PowerPDF Advanced, their help docs are out of date. They now have a button in the Tags Panel to the left of the Options button that will auto Tag a PDF document. I've added this to my notes for a tutorial.I spent about 15 minutes yesterday trying to remember where the button was. Thank you for the update. It would be great if we could find an alternative to Acrobat Pro for PDF remediation. Last I checked, the pricing was not much different between the Nuance option and Acrobat, sadly. I would be nervous about the Nuance product in terms of stability and accessibility over time based on my experience with how they release updates totheir speech recognition products. They have a tendency to make significant UI changes with little thought to accessibility as well as basic user experience. Their user support also doesn't have a good reputation. But if it offers any competition to Adobe, it would be a good starting point to consider, in my opinion. -*- Dan On Thu, Apr 11, 2019 at 6:03 AM Karlen Communications < info@karlencommunications.com> wrote: > Hi Everyone: > > > > As some of you know, I've been trying out Nuance PowerPDF Advanced and > Foxit Phantom for Business. > > > > I had two documents that are forms which means a lot of underline and > boxes to visually represent where you enter information. > > > > When I used the Acrobat Pro DC (current release/update) ability to auto > tag the documents, about 85% of the lines, boxes and bits of the background > were tagged as requiring Alt Text and only about 15% of the > actual text was tagged. If I log into my personal YouTube account and try to find where my videos are the Video Manager link will tell me that I have no videos. When I click the dropdown from my name in the upper right-hand corner there is a Studio (Beta) offered and that is where my videos are visible. But trying to then find the edit subtitles/cc link is not (easily) found, leaving me to switch back to Creator Studio where I'm then asked why it is that I'm reverting back to that. Only there am I easily able to find my captions and be presented with a choice to upload a .srt file, edit as the video plays or, upload a transcript that will hopefully be synced to the content. A new tab will open with the transcript of the YouTube video, which you can edit as necessary. You can then copy your edited transcript, paste back into YouTube's subtitle editor, and set the timings. Note: DIY Captions also has a captions editor with many useful shortcuts, yet there were accessibility issues last I checked. I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to dictate the script, so when I film myself "reading" the script, it feels natural to me and the viewer doesn't get a disconnect between what my mouth is forming and what I'm actually reading aloud from the script. Since I've already spoken it once, it comes out more naturally anyway when filmed. The MSW doc that's created from the script can then be easily uploaded or copied/pasted into the dialog box in YouTube. It is easy enough to make any corrections to the text before uploading. I found the whole process easy to handle. I have also found that the way to find how to captions on YouTube is now quite complicated and hidden from view, making it frustrating and not as intuitive as it's been in previous versions. HTH! The one offering was to put a border around the text form control and then identify the form control as a comb in the Options tab.but even doing that, the comb settings in the Options tab for a text form control is not available. I've tried checking and unchecking things but I just can't identify the text form control as a Comb with a limit of characters. Am using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC with all updates installed. Am now going to check PowerPDF in case I can set this there, but it is strange that I can't do this in Acrobat. I haven't found very much accessibility in their online exams. We tried to use WYNN and a couple of other text-to-speech apps, but none of them worked. ZoomText with the reader only worked on the instructions page and then nothing. JAWS and NVDA worked on some of the items, but not well nor consistently. We ended up using a live reader for that exam. Their only advice when asked about using a text to speech software with their exams was to "order the pencil/paper version". This was a few of years ago (2015), so things may have changed. That was the last exam for this student - she graduated. Since then, we have only had students with extended time and that is adjusted by the instructor - so no issues there. Every so often I have attempted other audio tech, but haven't found anything that works. Please let me know if you find anything different. Although they will look into these findings, I had mentioned that I have found similar errors in other products that seems to show made up ARIA roles, states, and values. Their response was it is acceptable to make up ARIA. This doesn't sound right and I've tried to search for anything to confirm this statement, but have come up empty handed. If developers make up a role/state/property, the browser won't know how to expose it, and the screen reader won't know how to interpret it. Role="fish", for example, will not make JAWS or NVDA consider something to be a fish, because there's no such thing as a "fish" mapping in Windows' User Interface Automation API. Here's some info on how ARIA roles are supposed to get mapped . Again, this isn't necessarily how it all translates out in the real world, but should cover the scope of what you're running into. I'd also share this Role Mapping Table with them, and ask them to explain how (with what ATs and browser combinations) they're coming to the conclusion that fake ARIA works, and what criteria they're using to determine "works" vs "doesn't work." Also, I'm wondering if they're looking at one really specific edge case -- role="text", which was *proposed* for the spec , but not added, and has unofficial support in Safari/VoiceOver on iOS and (I think?) in Chrome -- and assuming that what they can do in a really, really specific scenario applies everywhere. You can also open up the accessibility inspector in Chrome or FF to get an idea of how elements are getting mapped in the accessibility tree, and then take screenshots of how their code gets translated out to screen readers. This won't *necessarily* correlate 1:1 with the OS' internal mappings, but should be enough to show them that their fake roles aren't actually changing anything. Message-ID: I have a "the more you know" post to share with all you lovely ATHEN'ians today. This morning I was thinking about the OpenDyslexic font for whatever reason, and I remember hearing that it didn't really do much to improve reading for people with Dyslexia. Does it make sense to that a special typeset could compensate for a difficulty with decoding symbols? It's still a symbol, right?... I had a look to see if any research had been done. I found this study: The effect of a specialized dyslexia font, OpenDyslexic, on reading rate and accuracy And this one: Dyslexie font does not benefit reading in children with or without dyslexia While these are not large population sizes, these two studies show that there doesn't seem to be a difference in reading speed or accuracy between the Dyslexia-focused fonts and Arial or Times New Roman. The second study seems to indicate that the buzz around these fonts was largely due to the designer's claim that the weight of the letters was what helps readers with Dyslexia. The research however, does not support it. Date: Tue Apr 23 13:21:14 2019 Subject: [Athen] ARIA attributes In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Alex is basically exactly correct. ARIA that is made up will have no impact on accessibility whatsoever. ARIA roles that aren?t implemented properly will usually create more problems than it solves. I would extend the technical description a tad; the browser reads the DOM (code of the web page,) and presents the browser?s interpretation of the DOM to the Accessibility API of the operating system. Screen readers, by and large anyway, read the accessibility API and interpret that output. So, in short, the website must implement the specification properly, and both the browser and assistive technology in question must support and implement the specification. If any of these things are not true, it can lead to problems. For example, it is possible, and often does occur, that there is a lag between roles being part of the specification, or proposed for inclusion, and when those roles, states, and values are supported by the browser and screen readers in question. Older browsers or screen readers may not, and often times do not, fully work with the latest version of ARIA. This is why ARIA should not be used as a first-line solution to accessibility problems; and especially not ARIA that is simply proposed or newly included ARIA. As an aside, this is also why pushing the browsers and assistive technology vendors to stick strictly to the specification is so important. It is challenging enough to ensure accessibility in this space, but all the more if browsers and assistive technologies don?t uniformly implement the specification. From: athen-list On Behalf Of Alex Umstead Sent: Thursday, April 18, 2019 7:37 PM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: Re: [Athen] ARIA attributes Hi Khoa, I'll put it this way: if they think they can make up ARIA roles, states, and properties, they don't know much about ARIA. :) ARIA only works (at least as I understand it) through the browser exposing information in very specific ways to the OS' accessibility API. Here's some info on how ARIA roles are supposed to get mapped. Again, this isn't necessarily how it all translates out in the real world, but should cover the scope of what you're running into. I'd also share this Role Mapping Table with them, and ask them to explain how (with what ATs and browser combinations) they're coming to the conclusion that fake ARIA works, and what criteria they're using to determine "works" vs "doesn't work." Also, I'm wondering if they're looking at one really specific edge case -- role="text", which was proposed for the spec, but not added, and has unofficial support in Safari/VoiceOver on iOS and (I think?) in Chrome -- and assuming that what they can do in a really, really specific scenario applies everywhere. You can also open up the accessibility inspector in Chrome or FF to get an idea of how elements are getting mapped in the accessibility tree, and then take screenshots of how their code gets translated out to screen readers. This won't necessarily correlate 1:1 with the OS' internal mappings, but should be enough to show them that their fake roles aren't actually changing anything. He has many limitations that include: extremely visually impaired (needs 3x-4x magnification); has extreme hearing loss (reads lips only ? but with his visual impairment, not sure how much he can actually get from lip reading); has tremors, and uses a motorized scooter/wheelchair. He does not read Braille or use ASL. We are struggling with finding the right mix of accommodations that will meet his needs in the classroom (both lecture-type setting as well as laboratory setting). Here is what we are doing thus far for classroom accommodations: ? Providing alternate formats (when he requests it. Oddly enough, he has not requested his textbooks to be put into an alternate format at this point). He does not use JAWS or Voice Over. He enlarges PDF files. ? He sits in the front of the class ? Wheelchair accessible, adjustable-height table (not adjustable on the fly, but the legs are adjustable, and they are adjusted to the highest setting) ? Provided a laptop and high-powered microphone for real-time captioning (remote). We live in a rural area and do not have anyone local who can provide real-time captioning. ? Provided a student (visual assistant) who uses a livescribe pen to write what he/she sees on the board on livescribe paper and this is transmitted to the student via Bluetooth to a tablet he is holding. Admittedly, there is a lot for him to look at in class (the laptop for captioning, the tablet for what is happening on the board, etc.) ? MAGic dongle for use in the computer labs Here is what we are doing thus far for testing accommodations: ? Access to CCTV ? Access to computer with screen magnification software ? Access to large-print keyboard ? Access to alternate pointing device if necessary (because of the tremors) ? Access to MathType (which he uses at home) He has his own personal iPad, and he is quite proficient at using this (to get an idea of what kind of magnification and technology he uses). He does not use voice over ? just magnification and pinching to zoom. As you can imagine, in the math classes (higher-level math), there is a lot of white board (or in our case?chalk board ? yes, I did say chalk board) use. We want to be sure we are providing the best mix of accommodations for this student. Are we missing something? Could we do better? Suggestions are very much appreciated! Side note: I have looked into the Luidia Smartmarkers (these things are pretty cool!) https://www.luidia.com/smartmarker/. These may assist/replace the student (visual) assistant, and get the student more real-time access to what is happening on the board (rather than waiting for the assistant to copy what is on the board). These are only for white boards, and currently he is in classes with chalkboards only. We can certainly look into getting portable whiteboards though. Ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated! Plus you are lost and don't know how to find your way back. Has this ever happened to you using JAWS? Fear no more, the don't panic button is pressed, and this post will show you how to back out of most scary situations. The Where Am I Key Hold the JAWS key, which is either Insert or caps lock, depending on your setup, and press the T for Title key. Insert-T reads the title bar. Most windows have a title bar, and the window that is currently active is the one whose title will be voiced. This is like reading a street sign; it tells you where you are in general. But Where Am I Really? Knowing the name of the current road isn't enough; it helps to have the current address, and maybe the closest intersection and the name of a nearby business. The JAWS equivalent of it is the number 5 on the numeric keypad. Press it by itself to hear the current character. Hold down Insert while pressing the numeric pad's 5 key and you'll hear the current word. Hold Insert and press the up arrow to read the current line. Hold Alt and press the numeric keypad 5 to hear the current sentence. Now you know exactly where your cursor is positioned. But what else is here? If you are being asked to supply information, you might be inside a dialog box. It's called that because you are "dialoging" with your application. To read the entire contents of the box, and often the current window, press Insert-B. This differs from Insert-Down arrow the say all key which moves through an open document or web page, reading everything as it goes. Insert-B reads just what's on the screen in that box. Often a window can have more than one "Pane" or section. To move between panes, try pressing the F6 key. Some applications have more than one window open as well, and F6 will often navigate to the next open window in that application. In Windows more than one application is usually running, and perhaps you aren't where you think you are. This is easily fixed by holding the Alt key and repeatedly but slowly pressing and releasing the tab key. Alt-tab moves between your open applications, reading the title bar of each one as you cycle to it. Eventually you will alt-tab back to where you originally were. If you want to switch to a particular application, simply release Tab when the chosen application's title bar is voiced. Using Alt-Tab in conjunction with Insert-T lets you keep multiple windows open and quickly switch between them. Like beaming up on the Enterprise, it's efficient! If you prefer to arrow through a list of open applications, hold Insert and press F10. This pulls up the JAWS task list which shows a list of open applications and lets you move, using the arrow keys and tab, to any one. It's also a way to find applications which are open but still hiding from the alt-tab way of switching. But Everything here is Strange You might feel threatened on that dark and lonely street, but with JAWS, even when it is reading strangely, you can always tell it to take another look around and reconnoiter. To do this, press Insert-Escape, the keystroke to refresh the JAWS view of the screen. You can also try holding the Windows key and pressing the up arrow key. This causes the current window to maximize, that is to fill the whole screen. This forces JAWS to take a new snapshot of what it can see in your application and often corrects problems it has reading things. Also many applications, including web browsers and Windows Explorer use the F5 key to refresh, so pressing F5 can often make things right. You can also try running optical character recognition (OCR) on a screen JAWS is unable to read. To do this press Insert-Space to invoke a layered keystroke. Next press O for OCR followed by S for Screen. You will notice the JAWS cursor is now active and it will let you navigate everything the OCR process can convert onscreen to text. But I just want to go Home Holding the Windows key and pressing M "minimizes" all open windows and returns you to your desktop. This leaves all the applications open, but hides their windows so only the desktop is visible. Sometimes returning to the desktop is the best way to keep from loosing your work but get re-oriented. You can also exit most applications by insuring you are able to read its title bar which signifies it is active, and then holding the Alt key while you press F4. If that doesn't work, hold the Alt key, press space and a "window" menu appears. From there you can arrow down to Close and press Enter. This is the keyboard equivalent of clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of your currently active window. If you want to play it safe and close just the current window without closing the entire application, try pressing CTRL-W or Ctrl-F4. For example, CTRL-W will close the current web page and leave other pages in the browser open. CTRL-F4 will close the current Microsoft office document without closing the office application. If you want only to step back to something familiar, you will often find that the backspace will help. On web pages, it moves back to the previous page. In documents it erases the previous character. And if some automatic formatting is happening, such as bullets or numbering, backspacing can erase those auto-formatted characters as well. Press Home to get to the beginning of a line and backspace will erase anything Microsoft Office automatically typed at the start of that line for you. Oops, I pressed the wrong key If you are editing or typing text, use CTRL-Z to "undo" whatever you did by mistake. Hold control and press Z (think Z for Zap) and each time you press it, the previous thing you typed or did will be undone. If you were not editing text, your best bet is to use the previous techniques to figure out where you are and what you might have accidently invoked. Uh-OH, I missed what it said Did JAWS speak some important message you failed to catch? The speech history feature comes to your rescue. Press Insert-Space to invoke a layered keystroke. Then press H for Speech history. You'll be able to move through the last fifty items spoken using the arrow keys, and even arrow through them character by character or word by word. JAWS has pulled up its virtual viewer for you, so you can also copy and paste from this window, handy if you need to grab a contact's email address or name. And besides using the virtual viewer to reread anything spoken, you can virtualize the currently active window using the JAWS key, Alt and W. Hold the JAWS key down with Alt, then press the W key. You'll get a JAWS virtual viewer with everything it can read in the current window. Remember it's easy to make that virtual viewer disappear by pressing escape. But How do I do this With JAWS? Can't remember what you forgot? JAWS command search is your secret weapon. Press Insert-F2 for a list of JAWS managers. Command search is the first choice, so just press enter. You can now type in a search phrase - press Enter again if forms mode isn't active - and after you type your phrase, press tab to look through a list of results. Each result is the name of a command, followed by the keystrokes to invoke it. You can also press Insert-W at any time to get a list of common Windows commands or Insert-H to get a list of common JAWS commands or JAWS commands that are specific for the currently active application. And in most applications, pressing F1 invokes that application's specific help. If all else fails, ask Google. Type in the name of your application followed by the word keystroke or hotkey and Google can probably locate a list of keystrokes used by your application. Has your Data Been Saved You might know your soul is saved by your faith, but only the computer can save your data! In most standard Windows applications, if you have work that needs saving, pressing Control S, Alt S or F12 will usually do the trick. Before you exit an application, if you are unsure, save again. I'm just Dazed and Confused The best way to become a competent computer user is practice and training. Take advantage of all the free training offered online, and don't be afraid to ask for help locating those trainings. And be sure to schedule time to practice the new skills you are learning. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
