[Athen] JAWS and NVDA training help

I know this keeps going but I wanted to share this.

I uninstalled my SetPoint software that goes with my keyboard thinking I will just not use the extra software. And, by doing this, I was able to use the Insert F7 without issues. It is an ergonomic keyboard and I like the fact that it helps with wrist strain. Going to a standard keyboard started hurting right away. Without the SetPoint software, and even though Windows 10 has toggle keys sounds it did not work. My toggle keys is a huge feature for me. My keyboard does not have lights to let me know if they are on or off.

So, I went to the web and found an updated version of SetPoint. I installed it and low and behold, I was able to add F7 into the keystroke field. On my older version, I did not have this option. It would only let me add certain keystrokes and F7 was not one of them. And, this is the default setting to open a web browser, thus Google Chrome opening when I pushed F7.

I am so happy I persisted as I did not want to lose my main keyboard and did not want to use it without the SetPoint software. It has been a great day.

Now, on to training. ☺

The problem with my Insert F7, it is my keyboard. I have a Logitech K350 and it has options for the what they call the F key function. Nothing I do lets me bypass it. By default, F7 is set to open your web browser, thus my Google Chrome opening each time I press F7.

So, I am resorting to a USB keyboard when I do testing.

Thank you to those who helped.

Now, on to training.

As for F7 opening Chrome, it kind of sounds like your keyboard has its own shortcuts built in and they’re being triggered.
This is quite common, and annoying to screen reader users. Almost every time I buy a new laptop I have to go into the BIOS and turn off the extended functionality so I can get the old function keys, F1, F2, etc., back.

Yes, Robert, I played with that, too. Nothing changed. In fact, without any screen reader running, when I initiate the Insert F7, my Chrome browser opens up. It must be some setting on my system. I am not sure where to look? I do not make any custom settings in NVDA or my browser.

Now, on to searching there this is set…. ☺

Also, just like when you are using quick keys such as H to jump between headings, you have to have Browse mode turned on by pressing insert+space. When you hear the low pitched sound you will know you're in browse mode. The elements list will not work unless you're in browse mode.

Hi Vicki,

It seems like you might have some sort of Windows shortcut for Chrome setup. If you change the NVDA key to Capslock, do you still have the same issue?

Thankx,

P.S. I would still recommend that you seek out more screen reader training whether it be free or paid to help increase your knowledge 😊

In fact, I can’t get the Elements List to work in a PDF either. It just opens the Chrome browser, too.

Thank you, Joe, that was it for the H quick heading problem. Now, I still can’t get the Elements list (Insert F7) to work in a Word document. No matter what I do, it still opens the Google Chrome browser (it is my default browser).

Just a follow up:

We hit certain walls that even though a YouTube video and other documentation tells us we are doing things correctly, we can’t get it to work the way it is documented. For example, with NVDA, you can use the quick heading key of H to navigate headings. In a Word document, neither myself nor my colleague can get this to work. It just types out H. And, if I initiate the NVDA elements list (Insert F7) while in a Word document, it opens google instead.

Joe: This is because NVDA is in “Forms/interaction Mode” and is passing through the keystrokes to the Microsoft Word Application so it types h.
(The main function of a Word document is kind of a giant text area field).
If you exit NVDA’s forms mode using NVDA Key (usually INSERT) + SPACEBAR (low pitch noise means you have switched into “virtual reading mode”, High pitch noise means “Forms mode”). Once you are in “reading mode” the H key and INSERT+F7 commands will work again.

See section 8. Reading Objects in NVDA’s key quick reference for more help https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvdaTracAttachments/455/keycommands%20with%20laptop%20keyboard%20layout.html#7 (possibly old link) or section 6. Browse Mode https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html?#BrowseMode (this is the latest documentation)

Hope this helps!

Joe Humbert

Hi Vicki,

I work for The Paciello Group (TPG). We offer many different kinds of training and our sister company is Freedom Scientific (Full disclosure: the training sessions will probably not be free).

You can contact Brian Landrigan at our company, blandrigan at paciellogroup.com<mailto:blandrigan at paciellogroup.com> or call him at 603-661-0204. He can help figure out, in collaboration with you, what training you might need.

To provide a high level answer, screen readers have different controls for web browsers versus other desktop software so all commands might not be cross compatible. The available screen reader functions will also depend on which mode the screen reader is in “virtual reading mode” versus “interaction/forms” mode.

I’m happy to help where I can in my free time.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Thankx,
Joe Humbert

Subject: [Athen] JAWS and NVDA training help

Our college tests all software that is requesting to be renewed or purchased. Our department is responsible for this task. Even though we have the basic skills using both JAWS and NVDA, we want to improve our skill set. We are both sighted users of these two products.

We are seeking anyone who is willing to do training for us. Both basic and advanced training. This can be remote training using Zoom video conferencing, in person, using email or phone calls.

We have Windows 10 and use the latest versions of NVDA and JAWS 2019.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.
