I haven?t found that functionality in Zoom itself but I use Otter.ai which integrates into Zoom. There is a free Otter.ai account that gives you 600 minutes a month. I just signed up for the paid Otter for Teams as it gives participants a button in Zoom where they can view a transcript and highlight parts of it then isolate the parts they highlighted?so they can in effect use it for some sort of note taking. I think with the Otter for Teams you can still use the basic Otter.ai functionality and get a transcript but I haven?t tried that yet?still experimenting. URL: From rbeach at KCKCC.EDU Tue Jul 14 06:01:13 2020 From: rbeach at KCKCC.EDU (Robert Beach) Date: Tue Jul 14 06:01:38 2020 Subject: [Athen] Zoom and captions Message-ID: Hello folks, You all may remember that I posted asking about how to turn on auto speech recognition in Zoom. My colleague and I have played around with it. Well, here are the results of our experimentation. 1) Unless I missed it, Zoom does not offer real-time auto speech recognition. I personally do not feel this is a bad thing. Too many people think they can turn on ASR and they have met the need for captions in their live presentations. This is not at all true. For a real-time presentation/meeting, you need a live captioner to correctly caption as you go. 2) Zoom does offer auto captions for recordings after they have been completed. This is a good way to get a draft of the caption transcript. Here are some pointers for this process. A) The feature must be turned on in your profile. This must be done through the web profile since the feature is not in the desktop app. The feature was already turned on in my account but was not on in my colleague's account. I'm not sure what the default setting should be. B) I'm not sure if the option is available in the free accounts since I am using a professional account. C) You must record to the cloud, not to the local machine. D. Apparently, you must stop the recording and end the meeting before the system starts generating the transcript. E) Once the transcript is finished, Zoom will email you and you can log into the web account to download either the video and/or the transcript. The transcript is a .VTT file. F) We uploaded the video and transcript to Panopto and we are quite happy with the results. The syncing was very good. Of course, there was some editing that needed to be done with the transcript, but it was very good. G) The transcript from Zoom indicated who was speaking automatically which was very nice. H) I did try sharing my screen with computer sound to record what the screen reader was saying. Unfortunately, the transcript did not pick up any of that. The screen reader speech has to be manually entered. This is still better than manually typing the entire transcript. 3) We did try loading the Zoom video into Panopto's auto speech recognition system to compare. Here is what we found. A) The accuracy was not as good as the transcript from Zoom. It did not take long to determine we would prefer the Zoom over the Panopto transcript. B) Panopto's ASR did catch the screen reader's voice, but it did not recognize much of the speech at all. We would still have to manually enter most if not all of the screen reader's speech. C) Panopto did not automatically mark who was speaking like Zoom did. This makes sense and was not a surprise. D) Panopto did sync the speech with the video very well. My take-aways: 1) For real-time captions, use a real-live captioner. 2) Use Zoom to record and generate the transcript for the captions since Zoom does a very good job. 3) Upload the video and transcript into Panopto and edit as needed. When I open in the program, I get the password request. I would like to extract the individual chapters. When I attempted to open the book in the assistive technology (Kurzweil) I get a message I am not allowed to do it. You can also explain to them that you usually break larger PDFs into chapters, for easier navigability with the student's technology. Include screen shots of Adobe showing that the password lock comes up when you open the file, and you cannot even read the text without the password. I looked into using them through Zoom but we opted not to. The live captioning through them is all ASR. It could be cleaned up after the class or event but there is no live captionist involved in the process for using three play during a live stream. because of that we chose to use the transcriptionists we use for classes. from what I remember the process, you have the administrator add them as a service provider and then you would need to approve use of the service for each event with three play before it can be turned on live for the actual zoom session. There is a "best practice" that it's nice to combine links that are adjacent that go to the same destination, but *not* doing that is not a WCAG failure. I assume you're talking about the "cards" section on that sample page? Such as "Our Research", "Who We Are", "College of Engineering", and "Community Design Center". Technically, the cards are ok and don't have WCAG problems. From a usability perspective, having each card be 3 or 4 tab stops might not be the best. ("Office for Sustainability" is 6 tab stops). I'm not a designer but I would probably make the entire card a big link with the link name being "Our research", "Who We Are", etc. Then use aria-describedby on the link to point to the paragraph of detailed text. Left to R right, standing: Rev. Harold Wilke and Swift Parrino, Chairperson, National Council on Disability, 07/26/1990. Thirty years ago on On July 26th, 1990 President George H. W. Bush signed the ADA with these words: ?Today, America welcomes into the mainstream of life all of our fellow citizens with disabilities. We embrace you for your abilities and for your disabilities, for our similarities and indeed for our differences, for your past courage and your future dreams. Last year, we celebrated a victory of international freedom. Even the strongest person couldn't scale the Berlin Wall to gain the elusive promise of independence that lay just beyond. And so, together we rejoiced when that barrier fell. And now I sign legislation which takes a sledgehammer to another wall, one which has for too many generations separated Americans with disabilities from the freedom they could glimpse, but not grasp. Once again, we rejoice as this barrier falls for claiming together we will not accept, we will not excuse, we will not tolerate discrimination in America. With, again, great thanks to the Members of the United States Senate, leaders of whom are here today, and those who worked so tirelessly for this legislation on both sides of the aisles. And to those Members of the House of Representatives with us here today, Democrats and Republicans as well, I salute you. And on your behalf, as well as the behalf of this entire country, I now lift my pen to sign this Americans with Disabilities Act and say: Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down. I was able to get Kurzweil to work with Respondus by using the "Allow access to specific external web domains" option within the Lockdown Browser settings. I then add the three following URL: https://www.kurzweil3000.com/KLogin.php, https://www.kurzweil3000.com/ShowFileList.php, https://www.kurzweil3000.com/ReadFile.php. The first is to log into Kurzweil 3000 online, second to get to the password page of the test, and third to open the test itself. I send the student the password when they are scheduled to take the test. On the instructor side, they would set the Lockdown settings with the URL's and provide a link to kurzweil3000.com in their test instructions. The instructor must also provide a test to my office. We upload it, with the password, to the student's Kurzweil account. The student then goes into Lockdown as they would normally. They click the Kurzweil link, log into Kurzweil open their exam with the password, and navigate back and forth between tabs to read and answer their questions. That is a quick overview so I hope it makes sense. If you have any other questions please let me know! Date: Tue Jul 28 12:21:05 2020 Subject: [Athen] Voice thread accessibility In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi Wink, I recently tested the VoiceThread Canvas LTI with NVDA and FireFox and found the following issues. Many of these issues seem to appear on their website as well. I didn't actually get to the point of reviewing a VoiceThread itself as I ran into so many issues on the VoiceThread setup side. My plan is to try to get the person who is our VoiceThread admin to talk with the vendor about making improvements but, with COVID, it may be a while yet before I get that ball rolling. Findings: - It is not possible for a keyboard only user in Canvas to complete the VoiceThread Setup task from the Main or Universal mode, so they are unable to choose what their students see when they access a particular VoiceThread link. WCAG 2.1.1 - In the VoiceThread Setup, the buttons are not in the tab order, the buttons are not described as ?clickable? or ?button? so users know they can be interacted with, and the buttons cannot be activated using keyboard commands. WCAG 2.1.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 (H44) , WCAG 3.3.2 - When a student accesses a VoiceThread Setup page, they are asked to provide an email address and the field does not have a programmatic label. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 (H44) , WCAG 3.3.2 - There isn?t always a visible focus indicator and sometimes a slight shift in color is the only indication. The color shift often does not have enough contrast between the focused and unfocused state to be noticed. WCAG 2.4.7 , WCAG 1.4.3 - Especially in the course home view, the hamburger menu in the upper left has an odd almost layered structure to it that makes it difficult to navigate with a keyboard. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - When the banner image selector pop-up is opened, a screen reader user must know they have to navigate to the very bottom of the page behind the pop-up before they can access the pop-up?s contents. WCAG 2.4.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - In the pop-up for choosing a banner image, the visible button labels and the screen reader labels do not match. Buttons also do not have visible focus indicators. The Import from web button may also not be in the Tab order. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 (H44) , WCAG 3.3.2 - The VoiceThread provided banner images are not in the Tab order and therefore cannot be selected by a keyboard only user. WCAG 2.1.1 - On the VoiceThread Home page, the Training and About links in the footer do not have strong enough color contrast until the links receive focus. WCAG 1.4.3 - In the VoiceThread Home page, the double right chevron (double arrows on left of screen) that expands a multi-faceted panel does not verbalize its collapsed/expanded state. Additionally the contents in the panel can be accessed by screen reader users when that region is collapsed. WCAG 4.1.2 , WCAG 2.4.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - In the VoiceThread Home view, the catalog of existing VoiceThreads are such that the title is the last thing you hear when exploring with a screen reader. It would make more sense if it was the first thing you hear. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - The date on a VoiceThread thumbnail does not have strong enough color contrast. WCAG 1.4.3 - The ?minus button? on a VoiceThread thumbnail is not descriptive enough for a screen reader user to know what it does. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 (H44) , WCAG 3.3.2 - In the Individual VT view, the links in the left sidebar do not have strong enough color contrast. WCAG 1.4.3 - In the Individual VT view, the Refresh all link is not in the Tab order. WCAG 2.1.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - In the pop-up where you are asked if you want to create a VoiceThread for the course or share a previously created VoiceThread, it is impossible to activate the buttons with keyboard commands. WCAG 2.1.1 - In Universal mode, after the Create a new VoiceThread option is selected, there is no verbal indication that the subsequent page has finished loading. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 3.3.2 , WCAG 4.1.2 - When creating a VoiceThread in the Universal mode, after a file has been uploaded through the add media interface, there is no upload progress indication heard. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 3.3.2 , WCAG 4.1.2 - [Possible user error?] When uploading media in a Create VoiceThread interface in the Universal mode, I received an error that the VoiceThread could not be found. If I must name a VoiceThread to create it, I should be prompted to do that before adding media. This said, after I did add a title, the Universal mode still said I had no VoiceThreads. - After a media has been uploaded, the screen reader accesses the Create VoiceThread page behind the file upload page and the Return link that would semantically belong to the Create VoiceThread page activates the Return link for the files upload page. This is incredibly confusing. With the exception of the Return link, the same is true of the audio recording page.WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 - When previewing an audio recording, the screen reader says to press one thing to continue recording and Enter to Save. Enter continued the recording. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 3.3.2 , WCAG 2.4.3 , WCAG 1.3.2 , - The ?Audio Recording using your microphone or webcam? button label is deceptive. When someone is glancing through the options, the mention of webcam may make them think they could record video and audio, not just audio. WCAG 1.3.1 , WCAG 1.3.1 (H44) , WCAG 2.4.4 , WCAG 3.3.2 - [Notes] In what I explored, I didn?t see any function/content that could not be made in an accessible way so that the Universal Mode is unnecessary. It is possible that there are functions inside of a VoiceThread that cannot be built in a way that can be completed by a screen reader/keyboard only user in the main interface, and, in that case, having the separate interface for just that part seems reasonable. Otherwise, I would move towards retiring the Universal mode. - [There?s more?] Hope this helps. -- Have a wonderful day! *Michelle Tuten | CLEMSON UNIVERSITY* Accessibility Coordinator Clemson Online 864-656-9319 Zoom Meeting Space (by Appointment) Office Location: Pendleton, SC ADA30*1990-2020 Americans with Disabilities Act Celebrate the ADA! We use both Brightspace and Read and Write here at PCC. We are rather fond of the Chrome extension but the Desktop version is efficacious as well. For exams and quizzes we find that the ?Screenshot Reader? feature is a good work around for this especially when a student discovers this issue mid exam. Depending on the version of RW you use there may be an additional extension to enable this feature. There is a bit of a lag associated with this tool so I always sort of promote it as a back up tool over the other TTS features but it works pretty well. We have also found that, and my knowledge is not as thorough in this area, but there is an adjustment that the instructor themselves can make in the way that the exam is configured for individual accommodated students who need to use Brightspace with TTS/RW. It has something to do with enabling the ability to make selections of text such as you would for copying and pasting, which is frequently disabled to prevent students from extracting sections of the exam to share with others. Your instructional support branch may know more about this or I am happy to check in with ours about altering these settings. I would love to hear more about the way you use Windows Narrator in the Brightspace environment. I know that there have been vast improvements to this screen reader though it sort of remains on the outs with the AT community in comparison to applications such as JAWS NVDA and VoiceOver. About: Our Scope of Products: We specialize in 3 lines of products, all intended to assist in access to adaptive electronics, enhance experiences for guide dog teams, and offer practical solutions for organization and travel with a variety of leather bags, pouches, and backpacks. Then there are the random products that are included, just for fun! We enjoy working with our customers 1-on-1 to their money is well spent and not wasted on something they may not use. In thinking about our customers and whether we will carry a product our guiding motto is that it must be: practical, affordable, simple, tested, and accessible (the pasta principle) and it seems to work very well. What We Do: We bring our business either via zoom, phone, or to your conference or convention, to give each customer a chance for questions and where possible, "hands on" evaluation of the merchandise. Kae and I test and use each product as blind users before we put it in our catalog. In the case of products for guide and service dogs, our own three guides, Thor, Debra and Melody, are engaged in the process of evaluating the usefulness, durability, and/or fun of the product. We want each of our products to be useful, accessible, afforable, and, whenever possible, fun! Our inventory is constantly changing, so a visit to us is never the same experience twice! 6 of 12 Sponsorship Packages still available.
