[Athen] function signs in NVDA

Hi Wink,
I think you want to suggest she adjusts the verbosity, as Steve infers so that “some” is the selection. I believe to read ASCII math, you need ”most” so that the minus (hyphen) is read.

Best,
Cath

Thanks Steve! I have already pointed my friend Sue to your link below. I keep your resource links bookmarked ;>)

I'll forward on the info about the edit vs presentation view + the toggle key. I suspect that may be it.

Thanks again!

Make sure the reading is taking place in the Presentation view (F5)...not the slide edit view. Also, it the prof is trying to use plain text dash for a minus sign (that is, not embedding it in a MathType expression), then that is typically not voiced by NVDA unless you set it to read all punctuation.

There's a nice writeup of how to use MathType in PowerPoint so that it is accessible to screen readers:

Try downloading the Access8 Math add on through NVDA - that has built in code to read out many math symbols.

Here is the link:

Hi all,

I was contacted by a math colleague of mine from AZ about a project she's working on creating a PPT slide deck for math using NVDA.

She's set up with MathType & MathPlayer, but has reported a problem with NVDA not recognizing simple function symbols such as "+" and "-" being read correctly in NVDA.

I could not easily find my notes on this and wondered if anyone out there has a suggestion about a simple fix for this? A setting?

Any info would be helpful for me to pass along to her

Thanks in advance.
