At this time, we?ve solved some of the barriers by hiring a technical assistant/academic aide to work with the student. I?m going to throw this out there as a thought. In the past, when we encounter areas that are near impossible to accommodate, we step back to the drawing board. Is knowing 3D CAD and how to use that program an essential function for the degree? Is it essential that the student interact with that element in order to complete learning objectives and degree requirements? Or, are there other ways the student can acquire the learning objectives present for this course, perhaps by taking a different course or having an independent study opportunity? I know we have worked through this in both the academic and work environments - there are very few occasions where we have had to determine accommodations are not reasonable due to the essential function requirements of the degree/work programs. ~Dawn Dawn Hunziker IT Accessibility Consultant, Sr. | Disability Resources The University of Arizona | hunziker@arizona.edu drc.arizona.edu | itaccessibility.arizona.edu 520-626-9409 From: athen-list On Behalf Of Normajean.Brand Sent: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 9:25 AM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: [EXT]Re: [Athen] Technical Standards for Engineering program External Email We have a similar situation here - completely blind student wanting/demanding to take engineering courses and of course the 3D CAD course is in his plan. Small fonts, low light, and difficulty accessing digital texts all presented obstacles to his love of literature. Then he signed up for the Internet Archive?s program for people with print disabilities, which he calls a ?godsend.? Doug gained access to millions of books without a waitlist, in digital formats that were easier for him to read. If you are blind, or have low-vision, dyslexia, brain injuries and other cognition problems that require extra time to interact with materials, discover how you may qualify for our program. This week, Lillian Michelson, 92, saw her dream come true. After donating her Michelson Cinema Research Library to the Internet Archive, Lillian was able to cut the virtual ribbon on the new digital library bearing her name. The Internet Archive has begun scanning the more than one million books, photos, clippings and ephemera that were her life?s work and legacy. Go behind the scenes of Hollywood with this legend of cinema research. Libraries have always helped level the playing field?putting books into the hands of those who need them. But in the digital age, publishers are challenging our libraries? right to buy, preserve and lend books. Some publishers even embargo their newest ebooks from libraries. And during the pandemic, four of the world?s largest publishers sued the Internet Archive for copyright infringement, calling for an end to our digital book lending program (called Controlled Digital Lending or CDL) and the destruction of 1.4 million volumes in our collection. If the publishers win, it will change the digital future for all libraries. Library Futures is about organizing, activating and leading a movement for digital equity in libraries. The Internet Archive is honored to join Library Futures, and we hope you will too. The future of libraries and library readers is at stake. How local racial justice movements sprang to life? Or how your community pulled together during a natural disaster? Much of our life is now conducted solely online, so that is where public librarians are turning to preserve the often underrepresented voices in their communities. The Internet Archive is now accepting applications from public librarians to join our Community Webs program. Thanks to a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, participants will receive technical training, free web hosting and storage, and professional development stipends as they create web archives of their local histories. Oscar Isaac was lead guitarist and vocalist for a ?90s ska band called The Blinking Underdogs. Their music is preserved in the Internet Archive thanks to the Internet Underground Music Archive, considered by many to be the birthplace of online music. In the early days of the Internet, it provided a unique way for unsigned artists to get their music directly to listeners. While IUMA was forced to shut down in the mid-2000s, thousands of songs were uploaded to the Internet Archive. Is Oscar Isaac a better actor or musician? Listen here and decide. This 18th century text is written entirely in code, purporting to contain magical secrets and the key to extending life. Even odder, this alchemical book takes the form of a perfect equilateral triangle. With fanciful drawings and text inscribed in rainbow inks, this hand-written manuscript is a truly unique find. This is one of dozens of volumes in the Internet Archive?s Manly Palmer Hall Collection of Alchemical Manuscripts on the "subjects of alchemy, hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, and related arts.? On small screens or with vision problems, students say they often want to see the presenter more clearly and do away with the shared screen. Or maybe they want to just see the shared screen and nothing of the presenter or participants' video. Are either of these possible? 2) If you have configured your settings so your video is always off and you are muted when you enter a zoom meeting, is it possible to tell Zoom to automatically enable your video and unmute you for a specific meeting? This would be handy for people who have difficulty mousing or typing and would like to enter some meetings muted with video off and other meetings, such as classes which require it, to be unmuted and have their video already on. If you have any links to tech support articles on these subjects, I would welcome them. --Debee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: I'm finding that I can use various tools like WAVE or ANDI to identify inaccessible web content like a form field with no label or an image that lacks an ALT tag. But then not being a regular author of web content via HTML, I have to say to myself, "Now how is it your supposed to label a form field?" and go look up resources like examples on webaim.org. Is there anything out there that will both identify say, a missing form field and then also let the user fill in text that then gets added to properly pair up with the text box? I am thinking of something like what one can do in Adobe Acrobat Pro for at least the lack of ALT tags where one can go image by image, type in ALT text and go on to the next one then save the PDF. A tool like this that was open source would seem like such a great way to go. On small screens or with vision problems, students say they often want to see the presenter more clearly and do away with the shared screen. Or maybe they want to just see the shared screen and nothing of the presenter or participants? video. AutoCAD and probably some other 3D CAD programs have command line modes. I have met folks who made large sections of drawings on a text-only display, granted this was 30 years ago when high-end graphics were a luxury. I have actually done some drawing this way via AutoCAD. I always needed notes to keep track of locations dimensions etc. Essentially, I built the drawing in my mind and confirmed via the display. One could use a 3d printer for feedback. I suspect this would be very challenging to learn from scratch. It would be easier for someone who was familiar with using a 3d CAD system visually and then was trying to relearn non-visually. As others have said, it would all depend on what is actually required for the program of study. One is a screening software by Pymetrics based in NY and the other is HireVue based in Utah. Pymetrics? AI software puts a potential job hire through a series of online ?games? which include counting the number of dots in a pair of boxes, filling a balloon with air before it bursts open, and matching facial expressions with emotions. This software is used by a number of multi-national companies such as McDonalds, JP Morgan, PWC accountancy firms, and Heinz to screen (out) applicants for their potential success on the job. If they ?pass? the screen test, they (may) get a face-to-face interview. According to the founder of Pymetrics, ?Everyone wants the right job, and to hire the right person. It doesn't benefit anyone for the match to be off. Trying to use these AI systems in smart ways is to everyone's advantage." The second software, HireVue, uses the applicant?s video and audio to record their answers to preliminary interview questions, creates a written transcript and then screens the transcript for specific vocabulary usage (I vs. we, for example). ?The recruiting company can then choose to let HireVue's system reject candidates without having a human double-check, or have the candidate moved on for a video interview with an actual recruiter.? Both of these raise red flags for me both in terms of screening out people with certain types of disabilities, and the software from Pymetrics particularly appears to prevent applicants with visual and visual perception disabilities from using the preliminary screening process at all. Have any of you seen, evaluated, used either of these AI recruitment screening technologies for accessibility and/or hiring bias? I?m not going anywhere with this. I am curious and concerned. At one point I had access to a good demo site for CVENT's Attendee Hub. It was their own conference. But since it's ended I can only access the registration screens. Here's a sample conference site: https://web.cvent.com/event/dc3d1e64-801d-493b-ae5a-5df9deda648e/summary if you want to check it out. You can't get into the Attendee Hub portion with registering for a fee. Jon Gunderson mentioned that you have a report on CVENT accessibility issues. Would that be something you could share. I'm negotiating a contract with them for Attendee Hub and CVENT registration. I'd like to provide them with a list of accessibility issues. Also, do you or anyone else have recommended language for including in a contract to force compliance with WCAG 2.1? BTW, I've also looked at a product called Hopin. You can view use of their platform for different conferences at https://hopin.com/explore. They seem very motivated in becoming WCAG 2.1 compliant. It's not a fit for conferences - only large academic institutions. FYI - I've tested out Attendee Hub (from CVENT) and Lucy also tested it and it's the best regarding accessibility that I've seen. Not without some issues but significantly better than Whova. I received an email from a rep for a platform called OpenWater which they say is WCAG 2.x compliant. In anticipation of our January 27th (tomorrow!) ATHEN Quarterly meeting (all are invited, member or not), we wanted to discuss the real issue around software accessibility testing and how we can share information about the current state of a specific software. We have a facilitated discussion planned and ask you to consider the following questions to maximize the value of our time together. - How often do you need to answer the question "how accessible is [insert software name here]?" - When you need to know if a current software is accessible, where do you go? - What makes you trust someone?s competence in software accessibility testing? - Do you use the ATHEN Listserv for these queries? - Do you respond directly to the person and not the listserv? - Do you ask to schedule or offer to schedule a meeting? - Do you do your own software accessibility testing? - What does that look like? - What are your top concerns with sharing your findings? We are excited for what will result from this conversation. See you then! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: There?s definitely a need for this, and it?s technically possible, but it?s not easy due to Livescribe's proprietary pin connections in the audio jack. Most stereo audio plugs have 3 connections: tip, ring, and sleeve (TRS). Plugs that incorporate a microphone (like the iPhone) have 4: TRRS. Note that the Livescribe Echo?s proprietary recording headset has 5 pins (TRRRS), and we don?t know how they use those connections. BTW, this came up in a Nov. 4, 2019 ATHEN thread ("Using Another Audio Source for LiveScribe Pens"), and we decided it would be a great project for a music or audio engineering student to pursue. ;-) However, if you use one of the newer Livescribe pens ? Aegir (discontinued) or Symphony ? they don?t have built-in microphones, so they record audio directly into the Livescribe+ app using the mics on a Bluetooth-connected device (iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, PC). If the device running Livescribe+ is using an external mic or other audio source plugged in the mic input, Livescribe+ will link handwritten notes to recordings of that audio. (I tried this on an iPad ? haven?t tried the other options.) This ought to allow additional audio patching possibilities ? e.g., using a virtual audio patch utility like Soundflower (macOS) or VB-Cable (macOS, Windows) to route audio between Zoom and Livescribe+. - Shelley _____________________________ Shelley Haven ATP, RET Assistive Technology Consultant www.TechPotential.net www.AT4LD.net > On Feb 15, 2021, at 12:41 PM, Bourbeau, Maureen wrote: > > Hi all, > Given the move to remote classes and students still wanting to use their Smart Pens, is there anyway to capture the audio output from a Zoom session on the computer into the headphone port on the LiveScribe Echo pen? > Scenario -- when the student is listening to the Zoom session with headphones because they are in a shared or noisy environment. > I?ve been trying to use a patch audio cable from speaker out to the headphone port on the pen, but all I hear on playback is the sound of the pen moving on the paper. > > Has anyone found a successful hack for this? Message-ID: Maureen, I don't quite get the desire to capture to a Livescribe Pen as opposed to saving directly to the computer as the end product is going to be audio only and won't be associated with the Livescribe paper. Or will the student be taking notes on the proprietary paper while taking in the Zoom session? The jack on the Livescribe pen isn't a traditional stereo plug but instead has I believe, 3 rings or maybe 4 and livescribe sells earbuds that double as microphones where it captures from both left and right earbud with tiny microphones pointing outward and also play back left and right via the speakers on the earbuds. Those proprietary earbud/mics aren't hampered by that pen writing on paper sound and could even be hung somewhere near the computer's speakers if the student is using that to hear Zoom. Or I imagine the same Livescribe earbuds could be used in conjunction with microphone/headset if that is how the student is taking in a zoom session. And the bigger closed ear headsets would likely make for better isolation of the recording....student has Livescribe earbuds in ear canals and headset on over those to take in zoom...maybe having one earbud hanging loose if one can't hear the zoom session well enough. That's my 2 cents worth of audio ideas. Last spring, school went virtual for everyone from kindergarteners to grad students. Some college students had no safe place to go to. Parents and caregivers working in and outside the home have had to contend with competing and sometimes impossible demands on money, time, and energy. Some teachers, faculty, and staff have been pressured to return to in-person teaching in unsafe conditions. Many students have been craving in-person learning and community. Everyone has felt the demands to rush, and above all, to perform and achieve despite the collective trauma and mass death of the pandemic. And still the pandemic has hit disabled people at the margins of the margins the hardest, depriving us of resources, support, and care. This fireside chat between two leading scholar-activists will explore what access-centered pedagogy, rooted in disability justice, can offer us all. We will provide ASL interpretation and CART captioning for this event, which participants will be able to join by video or phone. Speakers Aimi Hamraie is associate professor of Medicine, Health, & Society and American Studies at Vanderbilt University, where they direct the Critical Design Lab. Hamraie is author of *Building Access: Universal Design and the Politics of Disability* (2017). They are co-founder of the Nashville Disability Justice Collective and Nashville Mutual Aid Collective. Mimi Kh?c is a writer, scholar, and teacher of things unwell and Scholar/Artist/Activist in Residence in Disability Studies at Georgetown University. She is the managing editor of The Asian American Literary Review and guest editor of *Open in Emergency: A Special Issue on Asian American Mental Health*. She is very slowly working on several book projects, including a manifesto on contingency in Asian American studies and essays on mental health, the arts, and the university. But mostly she spends her time baking, as access and care for herself and loved ones. RSVP for ?Disability Justice & Access-Centered Pedagogy in the Pandemic ? Contact: Lydia X. Z. I have looked at Endnote, Mendeley and Zotero and I'm getting mixed results with all of them. Zotero desktop works somewhat but the insert citation option in Word isn't accessible. Mendely seems to be a bit better but again the insert citation option in Word is a bit off and doesn't read the correct citation. Finally, it looks like Endnote's insert citation works in Word but I can't get JAWS to easily interact with the Desktop application and read the left navigation area. The web-based options might work, I haven't looked at that Word/citation option yet... Anyone have suggestions or information for best the combination to use?
