Actually, there are several glitches and it happens on any page with this same editor control. But to test, they need something that isn't hidden behind a password. So often, when I find a problem, I can only demonstrate on campus pages behind a password! Does anyone know of a public page I can send them? I'm either looking for one in Canvas or one in any other web application that uses the same rich edit control. Below are the details of the glitches I found. The workaround is to keep refreshing the OSM and switching focus away and back, but that doesn't always work. 1) When you try to go in to forms mode, you are not positioned in the rich text edit field, even though JAWS says "edit". 2) When you try to pull up the menu with Alt-f9 or the toolbar with Alt-f10, you get the browser's menu bar instead, or nothing happens. If outside of the web app, those keystrokes do not pull up the browser's menu bar. Sighted people can click on the three dots, but screen reader users are stuck with these keystrokes. 3) When you are typing text, JAWS says "misspelled" when a word isn't recognized even if you have "detect spelling errors" toggled off. If you are typing proper names, filenames or foreign languages, it's especially annoying. 4) If multiple edit fields are on the same page (such as in a quiz) it's difficult to position to the correct one; JAWS often opens the wrong one and puts you in to application mode. You type in your response, return to virtual cursor mode and then realize you've entered it in the wrong edit field. This happens regardless of whether forms mode is set to manual, semi-auto or auto. And when you are in application mode, you cannot read the field's prompt so you just have to hope you are focused in the correct field. 5) When you are arrowing in a rich edit field with applications mode turned on, JAWS sometimes doesn't properly read the line you are actually focused on. This behavior is random; I have not found a pattern. If you are inserting items, such as a table, a video or a picture, you often can't tell exactly where it landed. 6) If you want application mode to turn on, it sometimes refuses to do so, even if JAWS shows you focused on the application. When you try to return to virtual cursor mode, the PC cursor activates and you cannot get the virtual cursor to re-engage. I see some of these problems with NVDA as well, but NVDA is so verbose on these kinds of pages with multiple rich text editor web apps, it's frustrating to use. NVDA also is less reliable about reading by unit inside a web application. But if I find a public page, I'll certainly post a bug report for NVDA too. --Debee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have an issue with a student using Jaws 2021 and the Discussion Board in Blackboard Learn. I sent the below email to the Jaws Discussion list, but thought I'd check with you all as well. I'm working with a student who is using Jaws 2021 and is enrolled in an English course. The course is being delivered mostly online in Blackboard, version 9.1, I believe. The issue we are having is with the Discussion Board. The students must post an introduction in the Discussion Board, and read and respond to at least 2 other student introductions. When the student clicks on "Create Thread" to start his introduction, Jaws goes into "Application Mode. In this mode, the student can type in the Subject line, but there seems to be no way to get to the editor where the student must type in his introduction. Well, he can get to it by tabbing twice, but once there, he is not able to type anything in this editor, and there is no indication that he has entered the editor. Jaws reads "Thread: Self introduction. - ENGL-102-AS07(1) - 2021 Win..." when tabbing twice from the subject field. We can confirm that no text is being entered when typing by getting out of Applications Mode and narrowing down to where the Word count is shown, and it shows 0 words. The student is able to type his introduction in Word, copy all the text, and then paste it into the editor, but can not then read what he has pasted. We know the text has been pasted by the Word count, and once he submits his post, we are able to open it and read it with Jaws. The same thing happens when trying to respond to another student's introduction. He is able to read the introduction, press enter on "Reply" but cannot type or even know when or if he is in the Editor. He is able to type the response in Word, and copy and paste it into the Editor, but it seems like sometimes pressing tab twice from the subject field takes him into the editor, and sometimes he must tab 3 times, and since there is no indication that he is in the Editor, it is really hit and miss and quite frustrating. Are there settings in Blackboard that can be changed to allow Jaws to work with the Editor in the Discussions area? Are there any Jaws settings that can be changed to make this work? I also experience this same issue on my PC, so it's not specific to the student's computer. The problem also exists with NVDA. We are both running Windows 10 and Jaws 2021. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Once the system has processed the files about a ;minute or so you are then given a link to share in the meeting invite and or in the chat of the meeting and that is it. The link opens a small minny player that the user can access with their own at in a ;separate window that is synchronized with the slides on screen. there is a small bot that logs in to the meeting that watches for when the screen changes so you should make sure to let the scribe bot join if it asks but that is it smile all the meetings you create are stored on the server and you can get the link any time to share with meeting participants. I was hoping to use mine to do some image-only scans (for later OCR) and I'm having absolutely no luck. I know I could use the camera with An Open Book, which I do have a license to use, but according to a knowledgebase article you have to completely remove JAWS to install An Open Book and I didn't want to do that. Instead, I installed their FSCam driver for 64-bit systems and now the Pearl does show up as an unknown device. It's not recognized as a scanner or camera in Windows 10 2004. I have K1000 and several other scanning tools, and none of them see the Pearl camera. JAWS sees it fine, but can't do image-only scans and its OCR is too quick and dirty for my needs. --Debee -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have not used Blackboard but for Canvas, I make sure I am in applications mode and then issue one of the keystrokes to call up the menu bar or toolbar in the editor. Then I press Escape which is that editor's keystroke to return focus to the editor. This seems to convince JAWS and Chrome that I am, actually in the editor. Another keystroke for both JAWS and NVDA is insert-Escape. This refreshes its off-screen model as it resyncs with the document object model. Try issuing that keystroke before applications mode is triggered. Also try finding the form field for the editor and typing the content first, and then tabbing back to enter the subject last. I'm pretty sure this is a bug with JAWS and Chrome and not necessarily related to Blackboard. The student is using Chrome as his browser, so I've been trying to solve the problem using Chrome, to no avail. This morning I tried using Firefox, and the Discussion Board seems to work fine with Jaws in Firefox. As the student is more familiar using Chrome, if anyone has any ideas how to get this working in Chrome, that would be greatly appreciated. I also tried using Edge, but no luck there, and no surprise as it is also based on Chromium. Thanks, Russell From: athen-list > On Behalf Of Russell Solowoniuk Sent: Sunday, January 10, 2021 8:28 AM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network > Subject: [Athen] Jaws issue with Discussion Board in Blackboard EXTERNAL: Use caution. Hi everyone, I hope the new year is treating you all well. The author was very happy to send me the book but was waiting for more inventory and planned to ship me the hardcopy. But when he learned I was going to scan and create a PDF, and that I did it routinely, he balked. I explained we require proof of purchase and that students are told to destroy the copy at the end of their quarter (we don't have semesters here), but this author wonders why alt media doesn't work like public libraries, where the book automatically expires at the end of the loan period. I told him it just isn't done that way, and of course we cannot absolutely guarantee our students always comply and have shared their PDF files with others. My students mostly want plain PDF which they open in Kurzweil or Read and Write. Many have the Mac and use a variety of apps for reading. For them PDF is more versatile than anything else. Originally, when I started this job, there was more weight given to the "specialized format "clause in the law. We used Braille, Kurzweil and Daisy files which was a way to reassure authors that easy to read copies weren't floating around in the ether. But none of my students ever warmed up to specialized formats - sighted ones want PDF and blind ones want word. I realized I had no real way to reassure this author his book would be truly safe from unauthorized distribution. Myself, I'm happy to use the Kindle, Ibooks, Daisy, K1000, public library eBooks in epub that expire ... but I love to read so I'm willing to jump through hoops. Most of our students are not. I ended up suggesting he give his book to bookshare, which seems to be doing a better job of reassuring publishers than I am. I feel conflicted over this discussion. I want to protect authors while at the same time giving my students what they need. And in reality if it's on bookshare for example, I don't ask for proof of purchase. I myself read many books on bookshare I never intend to buy. And yes as a visually impaired person, I can do this. But bookshare also doesn't have a public library book expiration model either. I find it interesting how recent lawsuits have stressed the timely delivery of alt media while the specialized format clause has been virtually ignored. It's getting harder and harder to get books from publishers and I think authors' concerns are part of the problem. Have we, as access technology and alternate media specialists contributed to the problem by not insisting our students learn specialized formats and be restricted to specialized reading platforms? Should we adopt a public library eBook distribution model? But is it fair to make students jump through hoops instead of providing the easiest to learn solution? Are the rights of our students more valid than the rights of our textbook authors? I would have to disagree with your premise that it is getting harder to obtain alt format from publishers. I find the exact opposite. I do teach my students to use ePub - those who have used it prefer it to other formats for most of their material. Maybe I am outside of the norm here, but I also do not try to make students end their access to a file when their class ends - if they sell their book, sure. However, if they still have the physical book I do not see any reason they should have to end their access to their accessible version. Just some of my thoughts. Thanks for sharing yours! These are interesting observations! I, too, am finding roadblocks in getting some materials, like self-published things. I argue with publishers on a regular basis about what we do and why and how we do our best to hold to copyright restrictions, but that we cannot guarantee it. I also point out that what we do is protected by law, and that we have a legal mandate to provide alternate format to students who qualify for that accommodation. I also use my famous phrase: Civil Rights trump Copyrights, every single time. The right of the student is absolutely above the right of the publisher or the author. I make it very clear that I will be scanning a hard copy of their book if they refuse to provide files. We are doing our best by requesting proof of ownership of the book by the student, we are doing what we are able to do. And that needs to be good enough. We also do not waste time trying to claw back the student's electronic files at the end of the semester. How many students are reading those books after the end of the semester? I was an undergrad once. I can tell you I never went back and re-read books from my classes after the semester was over! I am an author. I understand and author's reluctance to provide files and why they feel like things will be shared beyond the original. But in reality, this doesn't happen all that much. Our students who are getting alternate format don't even want their friends to know they are getting accommodations in the first place. Sharing of electronic books is likely the furthest thing from their mind. *Please note: I am currently working remotely, so can be reached by email.* Susan Kelmer Alternate Format Production Program Manager Disability Services Division of Student Affairs T 303 735 4836 www.colorado.edu/disabilityservices [cid:image001.png@01D598AC.79FC1C60] Due to the nature of electronic communication, the security of this message cannot be guaranteed. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Eric et al Throwing out a possible solution. We had a number of student workers in our adaptive lab who we had set up with off-site login access to our AT lab computers with the OCR software and other text revision software we had available. We liked this because we (administrators) could easily track their hours and didn't have to buy extra software for the student workers to use. They liked it because it allowed them to work outside of the campus' open hours and outside of their class hours. I used a utility called logmein to get access (I was an administrator in the system). I've also had success having the DSS AT software loaded on the college servers and having IT set us up with open portal access. Both ABBYY FineReader and Omnipage Pro work in the open portal environment. Either are worth exploring in your situation, I think. Good luck! But it's nice to know the platforms themselves work great with screen reading technology. One piece of advice, if you use such a whiteboard is to let your students with reading disabilities practice with it ahead of time. I had to focus on the webinar while simultaneously trying to figure out how to navigate the whiteboard interface. And many use that combination for hours every day. The biggest issue new low-vision folk seem to have is finding the meeting controls at the bottom of the screen. If you are helping someone over the phone, simply be patient and get them to explore. They can learn the keystrokes to activate the meeting controls or even change them to suit their needs. For example, after I had hand surgery and could use only my left hand for a month, I changed my mute key to F1 and nade it global so I didn't have to do alt-tab to return to zoom to mute and unmute. People who typically don't use the keyboard and are faced with using magnification often forget they need to move their lens around to see everything or use the keyboard to force the focus to where they want and get the magnification to track the focus. My mom has macular degeneration and I've simply learned to keep reminding her to look carefully and move her magnification around to be sure she sees everything. She gets impatient if she doesn't see a button I've told her to click on and is convinced it's not there. I have to remind her that these days, she isn't seeing everything and it's important when helping someone with limited vision for the helper to realize this as well. --Debee From: athen-list On Behalf Of Spade, Maria Sent: Monday, January 18, 2021 2:58 PM To: athen-list@u.washington.edu Subject: [Athen] ZoomText and Zoom Good evening. During the pandemic, our communities have witnessed and experienced constant violence ? in the medical and psychiatric systems, in the criminal legal system, in the educational systems, and in our own homes, communities, and movements. We are all burned out and far beyond capacity even though we are often on the front lines fighting for justice and freedom. This webinar will discuss what it means to survive burnout from racism and ableism during a global pandemic, and how we can offer care to each other outside of harmful systems. We will provide ASL interpretation (with a CDI) and CART captioning for this event, which participants will be able to join by video or phone. This week, Lillian Michelson, 92, saw her dream come true. Libraries have always helped level the playing field?putting books into the hands of those who need them. But in the digital age, publishers are challenging our libraries? right to buy, preserve and lend books. Some publishers even embargo their newest ebooks from libraries. And during the pandemic, four of the world?s largest publishers sued the Internet Archive for copyright infringement, calling for an end to our digital book lending program (called Controlled Digital Lending or CDL) and the destruction of 1.4 million volumes in our collection. If the publishers win, it will change the digital future for all libraries. Library Futures is about organizing, activating and leading a movement for digital equity in libraries. This 18th century text is written entirely in code, purporting to contain magical secrets and the key to extending life. Even odder, this alchemical book takes the form of a perfect equilateral triangle. With fanciful drawings and text inscribed in rainbow inks, this hand-written manuscript is a truly unique find. This is one of dozens of volumes in the Internet Archive?s Manly Palmer Hall Collection of Alchemical Manuscripts on the "subjects of alchemy, hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, and related arts.? I am in the process of working with departments on campus to train student workers how to make PDF files accessible, and then building a campus database that will hold them all. However, as it turns out, we've never had to make any STEM PDF's accessible. Can I please be given some guidance on how to go about this? I have tried various searches on Google and really haven't found a simple answer that gets me started. I also haven't seen anything that states exceptions to accessible PDF files, so I am really confused as to how to make some of these materials read with text-to-speech or a screen reader vs providing an alternative format. I think it's important to note that we are doing this to be compliant, versus current student need. If there is some exception where alternative formats can be provided for these PDF documents, that works. At the same time I need to better educate myself so that should one of our vision impaired or blind students take a STEM class I know exactly what I need to do without scrambling. Given that you?re in a college setting where students use all kinds of devices, you?ll also want to go beyond the requirements and also make the Architectural/Construction reading order logical too, as many of those devices use the Order panel instead of the Tags panel. And you?ll need good, descriptive Alt-text on conventional graphics. After that, work on the STEM portions: * Formulas/Maths * Statistical charts/graphics * Info graphics * Technical drawings There are many ways to make them accessible; what you choose depends upon the subject matter and content in the PDF. FYI, try to avoid making alternative formats. You end up with duplicate versions of the content and inevitably one gets out of date. It?s really management nightmare. So aim to make PDFs work for all users. ? ? ? Bevi Chagnon | Designer, Accessibility Technician | Chagnon@PubCom.com ? ? ? For example, a completely blind student takes a 3D CAD course requiring the use of software that requires visual manipulation and creation of on-screen 3D models, accommodations have been exhausted. Should there be technical requirements to let these students know beforehand what types of vision or physical skills are required to complete a course? I see UNC has technical standard for medical/clinical programs that address this. The Livescribe Echo has been discontinued ? more on that at the end of this post. > Has anyone found a similar note taking tool? It depends on the feature set you?re looking for when referring to "Livescribe Echo smartpens". To me, the Echo has five primary features: 1) Record continuous audio 2) Capture handwritten notes 3) Automatically time-synch notes to the audio 4) Ability to upload audio and notes to another device (computer, tablet) for storage and/or manipulation (or do this within the tool itself) 5) All features housed in a single device or app. The Livescribe Echo can do 1-5. The Livescribe 3, Aegir, and Symphony pens can do 2-4, but require a connected bluetooth device to do 1. The Neo line of smartpens , conceptually similar to Livescribe pens (capture anything handwritten on special "Ncode" paper in real time) can do 2 and the notes part of 4, but require a separate device (Neo RECO ) to capture and synch to linked audio (1 and 3). The Notability iPad app can do 1-5 (plus a lot more), but of course you need an iPad and probably a decent stylus (Apple Pencil, Logitech Crayon). AudioNote 2 is conceptually similar to Notability. (The macOS, iOS, and iPadOS versions work best.) The desktop (not online) version of Microsoft OneNote can do 1-5, but for typed (not handwritten) notes. I?m not sure if it can also do 2 with handwritten notes when using a Surface tablet and stylus. On a related note (no pun intended), I contacted Livescribe/Anoto recently to ask about the dearth of Echo pens. They confirmed my fears that: > The Echo Smartpen is discontinued and Livescribe will no longer produce units for this smartpen. But they quickly added some good news: > However, we will continue to support any issues relating to the Echo smartpen and Echo Desktop software application until the launch of the Echo 2. > We look forward to bringing you more updates on Echo 2. We do understand the need for a single unit that can handle all features and this is what the Echo 2 is expected to be. I'm very pleased to hear that Livescribe/Anoto understands the Echo's major advantage over other smartpens of not needing to link to a separate Bluetooth device (one less thing to think about ? important for those with learning challenges).
