I forgot it was enabled on my work PC but not on my employers? laptop I?m using here at home, I could read the slides, but not the way google shows screen reader users doing it in their videos. You have to tab around a lot. Screen reader support is under tools-accessibility for google slides and it?s hard to enable if you are using a screen reader, but it?s a one-time thing; once you do it, it is saved with your account but apparently doesn?t auto-enable if you switch to a different computer. The other weird thing was that to read the questions the students would need to respond to I had to enable Braille support. Then with a lot of tabbing I could read most of what I needed. I?m not convinced this is fully accessible for a student participating in class but it was good enough for me as a volunteer assistant. The other issue with Pear Deck is a problem for any print disability. You will need speech to read everything and then as a student you?re going to need to answer questions and respond interactively and possibly read others? responses as well. If you are in a live classroom you?ll need to use headphones if you can?t read visually which means you won?t be hearing the instructor. If you are on a zoom meeting, same problem except you will need to stay on mute and can dispense with the headphones. I think when we talk about accessibility we forget the problem of a student who uses audio who needs to work in realtime and listen to the class and listen to their computer reading to them as well. At least I have Braille, but if I didn?t, I think it would be much harder for me to be a full participant in a class realtime especially when I had to read while listening to the teacher or a live discussion. --Debee From: athen-list On Behalf Of Ann Newland Sent: Monday, March 1, 2021 10:43 AM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: Re: [Athen] Pear Deck accessibility I looked at the Peardeck VPAT and the slides appear to be rendered as images of text instead of true text. Message-ID: Hello, My pics have both been mentioned, but let me add some reasons why I use these for conversion to MP3... CAR I get great results converting to MP3 with the free Central Access Reader, which can be found at Central Washington University. It is also my go-to for converting MS Word with MathType or EquationEditor equations to MP3 or screen reader accessible HTML with MathML. Can't say enough about how our students have benefitted from the HTML that is easy to access by default screen reader/browser combinations using the screen reader commands used for surfing the web. No plug-ins or special software required. I'm a big fan of CAR and the Central Access Toolbar is also very helpful and also very free. I pray these tools aren't allowed to atrophy and become obsolete! They are still compatable with the latest Window OS, but require 64bit OS. But I worry, since they haven't been updated in the last few years, and they are such valuable parts of our workflow for accessible STEM! BALABOLKA I'm also a big fan of Balabolka, for it's variety of language support, and how many features and options it has. Tons of control over pauses, pronunciation, splitting large files into multiple mp3s... and too much to mention. Yet can easily be used by novices. Only drawback is that it lacks MATH support. Hope that helps. Sean Loraas Accessibility Technician Alt. Those are necessary to use the script while others (MathJax-SRE and Aeneas) are for advanced features (math and MP3 bookmark creation). If you are interested, I can put it on Github and share a link to a video about its usage. Joseph On Tue, Mar 9, 2021 at 2:10 PM Russell Solowoniuk wrote: > Thanks Tristen. I am quite sure we purchased through campus supply vendor. I prefer comb because it is easier to take apart if needed (add/remove/replace) pages. Coils tear less but are more time consuming to make changes to binded document in my experience. I had a previous model that is no longer produced that had more fine tune adjustments for page sizes as well as more punch/no punch adjustments than this newer model. That is the only drawback I have with this one. I do not use this one as regularly as the other model I had due to decrease need to produce in house, but it does great, especially for the price! She's relying heavily on shortcut options listed at http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/keyboard_shortcuts. htm. I worked with her as someone who could help explain accessible ways to navigate while one of her college peers/supervisors helped us know which features she needed to access. There were a few items that weren't reading correctly but we were able to figure out alternative ways to access/input info. Like all programs, it's not fully accessible, but it was more accessible than I was expecting based on the interface I saw. She's just beginning to use the program so my experience is based on a very small portion of what I expect this application can do. EXTERNAL: Use caution. Hi Russell: I have found that most software programs that produce MP3 files are lacking in one of the following features: - voice changes (for foreign languages) - natural pausing at the end of paragraphs, page numbers; pitch changes for parenthetical content - ability to read math content - metadata for MP3s - MP3 bookmarks for easier navigation For all of these reasons, we have gone away from using the tools that the vendors provide and created a script that uses Balabolka's command-line tool + Microsoft's native voices to produce MP3s. Note: There are a few dependencies you would need to install to use it, such as Git for Windows (to recognize all the script's commands), Lame (to convert WAV to MP3), id3 (to add metadata), and FFMPEG (to add a Cover image to the MP3). Those are necessary to use the script while others (MathJax-SRE and Aeneas) are for advanced features (math and MP3 bookmark creation). If you are interested, I can put it on Github and share a link to a video about its usage. Joseph On Tue, Mar 9, 2021 at 2:10 PM Russell Solowoniuk > wrote: Thanks Tristen. Hello, My pics have both been mentioned, but let me add some reasons why I use these for conversion to MP3...
