The intent being not having to crank up the volume to listen with the headphones on while minimizing those nearby sounds. They aren't made for using the microphones to eliminate noise coming into the microphone. Cardioid microphones attempt to only pick up sound from one direction but aren't necessarily great at stopping background noises. Dragon is fairly forgiving if it's trained in a noisy environment, especially if the student is using a uni-directional mic (AKA a "noise cancelling" mic). The journal will be released in printed and digital formats. My institution is relatively new to incorporating alt text and other forms of digital accessibility, and we are therefore seeking a consultant with expertise in alt text and digital accessibility. We anticipate two phases to the consultancy. First would be relatively soon to look at a recent publication where we first used alt text and report on ways that it works, fails, and can be improved so that we can incorporate this feedback in our forthcoming publication. The second phase would be closer to publication, around March, to assess the publication and identify any areas needing redress prior to release. Please contact me directly if you are interested in learning more, and please feel free to share with others who might be of interest. As this is new to us, I am happy to discuss in more detail the scope of what we are working on. A modest consultancy stipend would be provided. I am using JAWS 2022, and was not able to get in at all. I tried using the JAWS cursor, but that didn?t work. I closed the meeting and tried to sign back in, and after that, the text that I was able to read with the JAWS cursor was in Spanish. I ran into this same issue in a TextHelp! Webinar back in December of 2020. I didn?t recall how I managed to get around this in December, but found some notes I had made, and in December I was able to get in on my iMac. Luckily I was working from home today, so had access to my iMac, and, sure enough, I was able to log in with no issue at all. The sad part is that there were only 10 minutes left in the webinar by the time I figured it all out! They will be sending out a recording of the webinar tomorrow, so I?ll listen to the rest of it then. I agree that we should suggest to vendors that they not use the GoTo Webinar platform. It?s so frustrating. Take care, Russell From: athen-list On Behalf Of Robert Spangler Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2021 8:51 AM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: [Athen] Accessibility of Go To Meeting EXTERNAL: Use caution. Hello, I use NVDA and JAWS, and have not had any success using Go To Meeting with either one! When I access a meeting link, the app opens, but I cannot navigate any part of the window. In fact, I always have to ask a student worker to click to join meeting with computer audio, because I can't access it. I wanted to check here if other screen readers have experienced this and if there are any workarounds. I think that if Go To Meeting is unwilling to fix their software (and it's been unusable like this for years) we need to start convincing vendors (I'm in a Texthelp webinar currently) to stop using it, and to use something like Zoom or Google Meets. Message-ID: Hi everyone, We will be switching our LMS from Blackboard Learn to Moodle beginning in the spring 2022 term. There is some discussion about including social annotation tools within the LMS. Has anyone had any experience with social annotation tools? If so, how accessible are they? Here is a brief description of social annotation tools, followed by a list of the 3 tools being considered at our institution. If anyone has any information as to how accessible any of the below tools are, that would be greatly appreciated. Definition: What is social annotation? Social annotation is reading and thinking together. It brings the age-old process of marking up texts to the digital learning space while making it a collaborative exercise. Three tools being considered: 1. Hyposthes.is (browser extension) - Open Source but cost to integrate it into LMS https://web.hypothes.is/blog/annotating-with-hypothesis-is-fully-accessible/ https://d242fdlp0qlcia.cloudfront.net/uploads/2021/02/14144633/Hypothesis-VPAT-2020.07.22.pdf 1. Perusall (LTI) - actual e-reader with annotation tools https://perusall.com/downloads/vpat.pdf 1. Talis Elevate https://support.talis.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000695158-Web-Accessibility-Statement Vanderbilt University comparison chart of Hypothes.is and Perusall Thank you for any information at all. One thing that stood out, maybe it is covered in a video and I missed it since I didn't watch those, was the need to add in procurement of accessible IT. In higher education there is so much that is purchased from third party vendors that becomes part of the institution's overall offering. That would include hardware and software. It is challenging to find anything that is fully accessible. Vendors will offer up a VPAT and few of those are useful and accurate. A couple of parallel developments are happening to aid those in higher education in better preparing themselves to get at the right questions to ask vendors beyond, "Would you send me the latest VPAT for product X?" Getting contact info for someone in that external company who knows accessibility and is actively working to improve that is essential as opposed to writing to a generic accessibility@example.com address. Getting the vendor to demo something like keyboard-only navigation, use of the product with a screen reader like NVDA, to provide a roadmap on what their next steps towards meeting WCAG 2.1 A and AA, and things like this would be great to include. Then the students who take your course will be better equipped in their efforts to create accessible learning environments. My (personal) challenges are that the adaptive software I use for voice navigation & dictation doesn't work on my phone and prevents me from accessing my work email account(s). This is as significant a barrier to access as CAPTCHA is: requires physical ability to type and/or recognize odd shaped letters & numbers (not compatible with screen readers either). I don't mind answering a security question or verifying my identity, but not by being forced to use two devices and technology which is not accessible for adaptive tech.
