The vast majority of individuals with TS experience a so-called "premonitory urge" that immediately precedes the tic ? a strong sensory phenomena of mounting inner tension which is subsequently relieved (albeit only temporarily) by the tic expression. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premonitory_urge Sensing the impending onset of a vocal tic, some students are able to click the mute switch, express the tic, then unmute and continue with dictation. Premonitory urges often occur a couple of seconds to a fraction of a second before a vocal tic, but obviously this varies by individual. Hope this helps, - Shelley _____________________________ Shelley Haven ATP, RET Assistive Technology Consultant www.TechPotential.net www.AT4LD.net On SundayJul 31, at 11:17 AM, Romack, Justin > wrote: Howdy y?all! I?m working with a student who has vocal ticks and wants to use speech-to-text dictation for longer writing assignments and essays (including use in our Testing Center). While I did not personally observe these ticks, they note this happens often (especially later in the day). The student has been able to use speech-to-text on their Android tablet by making use of a filter words feature built into the tablet?s dictation function (they?ll just filter out words/phrases as they become ticks). I?m not opposed to exploring this option in our Testing Center if necessary, but also wanted to see if we could provide a solution on our machines as well. I did look through some documentation on Chrome OS to see if I could duplicate their approach on a Chromebook, but didn?t have much luck. I?ve not looked super closely at the Windows/Mac built-in dictation tools, but couldn?t find anything in Dragon that would indicate a similar feature. The student does note that their ticks are usually at a much higher frequency range than their speaking voice and that another solution they?ve found to work is the noise suppression in Discord. This student seemed very well-versed on the tools that had been helpful to them to this point? it?s just putting them all together in the academic space. Curious if anyone has worked through a similar scenario and had advice or recommendations. Grateful for this community! "Audiom is a browser based inclusive map system that utilizes Open Street Map data in ways that allow the user to explore the world around them in a manner that provides more information than what can be parsed by a screen reader by itself". This is a really exciting project with many potential benefits for colleges and universities. It's primary function is in providing a browser-based accessible map of an area that a screen reader user can explore using their keyboard. It is self-voicing, but provides the option to use your screen reader's synthesized speech. According to the podcast file (available at: https://www.blindbargains.com/bargains.php?m=22493) the software is in Beta and the developers are looking for businesses such as colleges and universities to partner with them to create accessible audio maps of their campus and buildings. The Audiom web site is www.audiom.net . There is an interactive demo of Audiom on their web site, along with recorded demonstrations. In addition, it sounds like Audiom can also be used for audio representations of graph data. There is a demo of this on their web site as well. Theoretically, if several campuses start partnering with this company, Audiom could be a great solution to some of the questions that have been posed on this listserv over the years; specifically campus mapping/navigation for blind students and accessible data visualizations. We are currently exploring using a product called Remote Incident Manager (RIM) made by Pneuma Solutions https://pneumasolutions.com/. To my knowledge, they are the only one who are accessible from end to end and is screen reader agnostic. They are currently in beta and anyone can give it a spin at www.getrim.app. For me who is visually impaired and works in IT never had the opportunity to be able to remote control someone?s device for assistance, this is an utter game changer. Currently it is Windows to Windows but other platforms are in the near future and I?m told on the road map. This was made with accessibility in mind from the get-go not added later and retrofitted like most products we unfortunately have to use in higher education. Thus far from my testing it, it is absolutely amazing and I suspect will open so many doors since inclusivity is a baseline for their philosophy. While they are in beta, it is completely free and they are looking for more people to put it through its? paces. It would be great in my opinion to have some mouse users give it a try and I do see other spaces that this could fill. Someone had asked last month some time what other folks would use for proctoring a test. Since you can monitor what a student does in real-time, you would not have to send that student to a room on a specific computer on a specific day etc. Only difference I see between RIM and someone like HonorLock is verifying it?s you through a camera and a photograph of the student to make sure its really the student. I?m told, the camera isn?t part of the RIM product right now but can be added very easily if there are enough requests for it. This lifestyle premise is for everyone working and living on campus: students, faculty, staff, and administration. This lifestyle premise is a rationale for desirable behavior and attitudes. We, as a Christian community, commit ourselves to the admonition of the Apostle Paul that we build our community up in love for each other. We will actively endeavor to be supportive and caring for each other in spite of whatever differences may develop concerning the operation of the College. While honest differences may exist and be vigorously debated, the College will not condone personal attacks on other members of the community. To be in accord with the purposes and spirit of the College and with the doctrines and standards of the Church of the Nazarene, our lifestyle practices exclude: engaging in sexual acts outside of Christian marriage as defined by the Church of the Nazarene, the use of pornography, any acts of abuse, bullying or harassment, the use of profanity, gambling, theft, dishonesty, using tobacco in any form, participation in the occult and any other behavior that is detrimental to authentic Christian community and the maintenance of an atmosphere conducive to abundant life. The historic understanding of ENC and the Church of the Nazarene with respect to alcohol is that abstinence best reflects our commitments to Christ, to our community and to holy living. This position is rooted in our acknowledgement of the destructive consequences in individuals, families and communities that can stem from the use of alcohol and demonstrates our commitment to standing in solidarity with those who have suffered from these consequences. As a result, it continues to be our strong preference that all employees abstain from the use of alcoholic beverages. However, we respect the fact that our employees come from a variety of denominational backgrounds that may not share this commitment to abstinence. Our expectation, therefore, is that all employees will abide by the behavioral commitments of their local church, will avoid drunkenness, and will under no circumstances possess, use, promote or distribute alcoholic beverages on campus, at any college event, or in the presence of students. Additionally, ENC prohibits the possession, use, distribution or manufacture of illegal drugs and recreational marijuana, and the misuse of prescription drugs. The College expects all employees to live by this lifestyle premise. We ask for an understanding of the need for lifestyle standards, a good spirit in keeping them, and cooperative efforts in improving them. As ENC employees, we ask you to consider the larger picture that what we do and the manner in which we do it reflects on ENC and affects the life of our entire community. We encourage prayerful discernment in all decision-making, as our desire is to glorify God in all our efforts. *Equal Opportunity* Eastern Nazarene College policy prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion*, age, color, creed, national or ethnic origin, marital status, disability, genetic information, or any other protected class in all aspects of employment including the decision to hire, promote, discipline, or discharge. We actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups.* *Christian Faith and employment at Eastern Nazarene College: Eastern Nazarene College is an expression of the Church of the Nazarene. It reserves the right to prefer employees on the basis of religion (Title VII, Section 702-703, U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964). Preferred candidates demonstrate a strong commitment to the Christian faith, active participation in a local church, and a philosophy of Christian higher education consistent with the Wesleyan tradition. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You might consider purchasing a refreshable Braille display for your office, if you have a few students who read Braille. Other suggestions are one or two iPads, OpenBook (or Kurzweil), a scanner (flatbed or document cam such as the Purl), a tactile graphics kit (from APH). Those are just a few suggestions. The color gradient feature is designed to address various visual challenges of reading such as visual tracking and line transition errors (accidentally skipping or repeating lines). It is based on perception research by then-graduate-student Nick Lum which showed that gradual color gradients across text could increase visual reading rates by up to 50% (compared to using no reading aids). It can be used alone or in conjunction with text-to-speech. Think of this feature as serving a function similar to other features or strategies to aid visual tracking such as dynamic color highlighting, increased line spacing, sentence or line masking, etc. ? just another visual option to consider for readers with dyslexia, ADHD, and certain vision difficulties. We currently use a proprietary database to track all our disability services, accommodations, exams, technology, alt format, etc. For the alternate format piece, students complete an online request form with the information for the book they want in an alternate format: Title, Edition, Author, ISBN, Publisher, and include the course, term, instructor, date of textbook purchase and price paid. When they submit this online form, the information gets populated in our database. If we already have the requested alt format on file, there is a field that will show, "Item in inventory". We have the ability to run a number of reports in the database, for example, we can run a report to show all the requests received for any given term and year, a report to show all the requests made by a specific student, and much more. We are looking at perhaps moving to Accommodate by Symplicity as our database. I recall asking on this list last January if anyone was using Accommodate, and it appeared that none of you were. I am hoping that perhaps things have changed since then. So, if anyone is using Accommodate, can you tell me how the alternate format module works? Do you have the ability to run reports and pull out specific information? Is there a front end where students can enter their alt format requests? Does it have the ability to show whether or not the requested alt format is one that you already have? Does it work well? Also, can you track technology in Accommodate? We have loaner equipment that students borrow, and we need a way to track what technology students have out on loan, and what technology is left in inventory. If there are still no Accommodate users out there, I would appreciate it if anyone using any of the commercially available databases could answer my questions above. Many thanks, and hope you all have a great fall term. An update on the sudden and arbitrary cancellation of the Accessible Media Production graduate certificate program here in Ontario. It was a one-of-a-kind program here in Canada and we were just getting ready to accept international students this year (the graduate certificate was completely online). This IPEVO from Perkins is at the higher end of the tech. It?s portable, works with a variety of computer OS, has a low learning curve and can be used as a document camera (for scanning handouts into their laptop for magnification, or focused across the classroom to capture a photo of the board (whiteboard or chalk): https://www.perkins.org/resource/ipevo-camera-near-and-distance-viewing/ Or consider some lower tech models as simple as using a smartphone mounted on a small adjustable tripod & connected to the student?s laptop. Student can take images of the whiteboard/chalkboard, import directly to their laptop to save, and use enlargement software as needed. There are remote control switches available. This can also be combined with the use of Microsoft OneNote for the notes and images. I?m sure you?ll get more suggestions from the list. Hopefully this is a place for you to start. Dear All, We have a Visually Impaired student who is going to be in a business calculus class this semester. The instructor uses the chalk board and we are worried about how she is going to see the board. We are going to have a note taker but it would be nice if she could follow on the chalk board while the class is going on. Any ideas that you can share with me would be great. In cases like that, we contact the publisher and request a PDF. We then have our print services print out the PDF for the student. We call it "reverse alternate format." We contract with our campus printing services to print any electronic-only available material the student may need. For ADHD, this is not uncommon. It is also common for someone with light-induced migraines, or TBI's that affect how the brain processes electronic reading or light sources. Electronic reading is hard for the ADHD brain to manage, and there are a ton of distractions. I may see 1 or 2 students a semester with this accommodation, and work with them individually to meet their needs. As a complement to some of the ideas they have suggested, if the chalkboard is the only option, then I ask for more frequent washing of the chalk boards, which significantly improves the contrast both for visual access and cameras pointed at the boards. 2. Alternatively, I have a conversation with the instructor to explore the possibility of writing under a document camera with felt tip pen instead of the chalkboard. If possible, I then use the USB port of the doc cam as a way to pull the live video onto the instructor's or podium's computer. We then use a webinar software like Zoom or Google meet (without audio to avoid feedback) or similar to share the doc cam view to the student's laptop. Depending on the doc cam, it may show up as a camera or you may have to put it in a window and then screen share the window. I typically have the instructor leave the projector on the doc cam selection as the screen share of the doc cam from the laptop will have a little lag and/or slightly lower frame rate to it, but the clarity should be very good. If the instructor is sharing other visual materials like websites or videos or PPT, then the screenshare is best as you can leave it in that mode the entire class. A nice benefit of this is ending up with good quality paper copies of what was written. A similar result can also be achieved with the instructor using an iPad/stylus, Surface tablet, interactive whiteboard, etc. Hope all are doing well with the start of the semester, whether you are a couple weeks in, just started, or about to start, Todd From: athen-list On Behalf Of Robert Beach Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2022 8:37 AM To: Access Technology Higher Education Network Subject: Re: [Athen] [EXT] Seeing a chalk board Have you tried connecting a webcam to the student's laptop that can be pointed to the board?
