In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: We have both Kurzweil and Read&Write at SLCC. After a multi-division pilot last year we purchased Read&Write as an institution-wide literacy tool for all student, faculty, and staff for universal access. It was surprisingly affordable to get a domain license, and we've had a ton of positive feedback. Our Disability Resource Center currently still pays for Kurzweil for alt text accommodations. We have found Read&Write to work better with textbooks that are embedded in Canvas since the screenshot reader can do OCR on the fly in the same window if the text is locked down at all. Kurzweil's screenshot reading feature takes them to another tab in the web browser to read it in Kurzweil3000.com, which can feel disruptive while studying. In my experience Read&Write's ePub reader to works better for ePubs than Kurzweil. Read&Write also has a lot of other helpful accessibility features, like built-in dictation on the same toolbar. It allows students who use text-to-speech and dictation to get what they need in one program. As far as I'm aware the only real down-side to Read&Write, which some people may not feel is a down-side, is that they rely on cloud storage through Google or Microsoft, where Kurzweil has their own book cloud storage, and it can link with the other cloud storages as well. One implementation annoyance with Read&Write was that they are very Google-focused. Although they also support Microsoft logins and OneDrive storage a lot of their tutorials and verbiage still only mention Google Drive or logging in with your Gmail, which can be confusing for users when you're a Microsoft campus. I hope that's helpful. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hello, We are using Kurzweil 3000 and Readspeaker TextAid for Brightspace. Readspeaker Textaid is an add on for Learning Management Systems as for Text to speech. Both Kurzweil and Textaid have ways to share alternate format book files. Kurzweil's dictionary is more robust, in that words within a definition can be defined by easily selecting the definition option. Readspeaker uses a different dictionary look up, so copy and paste is required to define other words. Kurzweil has writing templates, there now is a folder for Higher Education that offers mindmaps, outlines and a split screen for writing from an outline. Some students like having Readspeaker within the LMS, because there is no need install software. Readspeaker is also available to all students and faculty, where our Kurzweil License is used mainly by students registered with Disability Services. We have offered Kurzweil to other departments, it's a case by case basis. Before adding Readspeaker, students would have to download the Word, PowerPoint or PDF files from the LMS and then open them in Kurzweil. Now the docreader in Readspeaker allows students to listen to the document as well as highlight and extract notes. Kurzweil also allows for note extraction, and it adds another feature that can extract a word list with definitions. I show both products as well as how to use Immersive Reader in Office to make sure that students can choose what works best for them. Some students are trying both products, but again having Readspeaker closely within the LMS makes that a bit easier. Students who are taking content heavy courses like History, Philosophy, some sciences like having the extract words with definitions within Kurzweil. Hope this is helpful. Auxiliary aids for accessing text-based materials, however, rely on regular, standards-based formatting as implemented by other regulations. Digital publications including textbooks are often still formatted favoring visual content discovery using display technologies such as PDF and do not contain markup structuring content in a linear fashion as is the case with HTML or ePub formats. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Capti has a module that does OCR? depends upon how your account is set up. Capti is pretty flexible overall with extensions, apps and use on the website options. Everyone using it needs an account, but it lets you sign in with Google, Apple ID etc? I?m not really a fan of how it does tts within d2l, or on the web in general. It pulls the text out and reads from a separate mini-app that highlights only the actual word it is saying. The reading box can use different fonts etc. Capti relys on the default computer voice unless you get their Premium voices which are not part of their premium account. ReadSpeaker Doc reader was implemented in our D2L ? some students report this stuttering or stopping since we moved to a CCC wide (Colorado Community College wide) version of D2L this year. It still is very useful and apx 78 % of our students have used it, but I offer students other Chrome extensions in case of ReadSpeaker not working the way they like. Best regards, Cath Catherine M. Beware of phishing and social engineering! Hi all, My Library systems people are asking me if I could ask for examples of websites that meet WCAG. We did not specify a level or version of WCAG, but I'll say at least say 2.0 or above. Anyone want to suggest examples that you feel confident do a decent job of meeting any level or version of WCAG 2.0 or above? Library websites would probably be ideal, but other websites could be useful too. Sorry this question is probably rather broad. Thanks! On enabled videos, selecting the gear icon and choosing the "descriptive" audio track plays the audio track designated as descriptive audio - a format that is intended to give audio context for essential visual information. The purpose of the pilot is to better understand the unique needs of our users and how to create features to help reach broader audiences." This is making me very angry as I know the feature has been out for over 3 and maybe 4 years now as I first saw it in 2018 or 2019 on a video game trailer. We have now been contacted by a couple of instructors who have developed a 164 page framework for their Early learning and curriculum studies course. The framework is available as a PDF, but they have had several requests for an audio version of the framework. Read and Write was suggested, but they don't want to have to train all their students on how to use RW, so they asked about creating an MP3 of the framework. The feedback I received from many on this listserv in 2021 was that Balabolka was a good option for creating MP3s. Another suggestion was TextAloud, which we have used in the past. I just wanted to put it out there again, in case there's some new technology for creating MP3s since the last time I asked. Any suggestions for creating MP3s would be greatly appreciated. Yes, the PDF was first created in Word, but we're not sure the original Word version is still available. Just a quick question. We want MP3s, so why would we first want to convert to ePub? Is it easier to create MP3s from ePubs? I'll have a look at that link first thing next week. This is probably something that will not need to be done till next fall, so your idea sounds promising. Hello, In early 2023, DAISY will be coming out with an easy-to-use converter to many formats. It builds on the DAISY Pipeline, which has a TTS generation module to MP3. You could use the DAISY Pipeline today, but it takes a pretty good IT group to implement. The new development will make it easy for anybody to use. Here is more about the Microsoft funded project: https://daisy.org/news-events/articles/announcing-the-microsoft-supported-lo w-cost-assistive-technology-project/ What was used to produce the PDF? If it was Microsoft Word, you could use the WordToEPUB software to get you to EPUB. I am not sure when the beta versions will be out, if you need it this year. It?s possible that Berkeley has decided to go with Kaltura ? I really don?t know. As far as I can tell, the UC Santa Cruz, Irvine, and Riverside campuses currently use it. Since then I have seen it on a few other video game trailers but never on any other youtube channels. If we in education can't get access to the features we need to help our students and extended communities, how can more people learn about accessibility and how to do it right Here is my call to action. your campuses should also join me in asking google to get your team's access to the feature now so that we can learn how to use it and teach about how to always make videos more accessible to everyone lucy Berkeley IT Lucy Greco, Web Accessibility Evangelist Campus IT Experience Phone: (510) 289-6008 | Email: lgreco@berkeley.edu | https://webaccess.berkeley.edu Follow me on twitter @accessaces We champion diversity.
