Message-ID: Dear ATHEN colleagues, Washington state's 34 community and technical colleges use PeopleSoft applications across our college system, and we are advocating for accessibility improvements for our users. Does your college also use PeopleSoft? If so, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) would like to hear from you! Please take 5 minutes to complete this PeopleSoft User Survey for Educause IT Accessibility Group. Below is additional information about the goal of the survey. Thank you for your valuable input. ~Monica Oracle PeopleSoft User Survey for Educause IT Accessibility User Group August 2023 Context The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) is an agency that serves Washington state's 34 community and technical colleges. Over the last decade SBCTC has worked to facilitate the procurement and adoption of PeopleSoft software across our entire college system. PeopleSoft is developed by Oracle and is an electronic information and records system used by students, staff, and faculty to complete tasks such as class registration, academic advising, budget management and more. Here is information about Oracle's accessibility policies and standards. Furthermore, there are persistent technical and design accessibility issues that impact the experience of disabled users in the PeopleSoft environment. Our agency performs internal functional testing, advocates for improvement during monthly meetings with Oracle, and hosts an accessibility open forum for our college stakeholders to help keep everyone informed. Goal of the Survey The goal of this survey is to help SBCTC to gain a better understanding of how many colleges/institutions within this Educause group also use PeopleSoft applications at their college/institution. If so, SBCTC would also like to know if your college is tracking accessibility issues, if your college is engaged with Oracle representatives or not, and finally, if your college is interested in partnering with SBCTC in our advocacy efforts. How will this information be used? The results of this survey will be reviewed by the Accessibility team members at SBCTC, the agency's Chief Information Officer, and the Executive Director. The results of the survey will not be shared or posted publicly and will not be shared with Oracle. A question is included that will allow the person completing the survey to give permission for their answers to be shared with the other colleges/institutions that have completed the survey or not. Got Questions? If you have any questions, please contact Monica Olsson at: molsson@sbctc.edu [Title: SBCTC logo - Description: Compass] Monica M. Olsson (she/her/hers) Policy Associate ? Two options that some of my students like are the Screen Mask extension in Chrome and the Oneline extension. Another different type of focus extension tool is the readermode.io tool. Readermode has the ability to simplify the interface, use a ?Dyslexia Ruler?, choose preferred fonts and display features such as line length, font size and line height. Some students like the Pro version which is a $15 one time investment. Best regards, Cath Catherine M. External Email Hello Jeff, Immersive Reader is a great alternative to BeelineReader and is free. Can be found in most MS Office products, Edge browser, and it can be enabled in Canvas. But if you want a masking overlay, you might still be able to get the Claro ScreenRuler: https://www.texthelp.com/en-gb/solutions/dsa/claroread/ Texthelp bought them out, but it looks like they may have some of the tools still available. Or maybe a set of Irlen glasses (all over amazon) or a computer screen overlay? https://irlen.mybigcommerce.com/colored-overlays/ If you?re student is wanting a distraction free browser, try out Brave Browser. It?s based on Chromium and can install anything from the Chrome store, but has additional security features built in. It blocks all ads by default, forces https connections, has noscript built-in, and actually displays PDF?s with tags?unlike other browsers. I can also extract text from images in the browser, which I accidently found out when attempting to download an image. Hello, What solutions have some of you been utilizing for screen masking for students besides Read&Write? We moved to Speechify at the U of A and a student is wondering what solutions might be possible for this capability. Beeline is a paid product and I was wondering if people had other solutions for this intended purpose. Any pointers are sincerely appreciated. I would say it's worth it, but I'll also note that Glean has started including some of the newer Education features as subscription-like add ons. Even if you get Glean for Education, there's no guarantee that your students will get some newer features unless your department pays additional money. We use Williams AV here. Have you tried Petralex on Android/iOS devices? It?s an app that?s meant for hard of hearing individuals to help convince them that hearing aids may be needed. There is a subscription for this service after a 1 week trial. Otter can be somewhat good, but it?s not something that I would recommend to replace CART. It is great for after hour events which may not have captioning available. AVA (Audio Video Accessibility) is an app that provides automated captioning or CART which you may want to consider. There are plans for their CART services. Have the student sign up with Innocaption.com ASAP. It?s captioning for the DHOH users on mobile devices and is free for personal use. They do have the potential to use it for Zoom lectures where other students are attending remotely, but illegal to use if the DHOH student is the only remote attendee. I ended up borrowing one half of an FM amplification system we had in the office, which just had a microphone attached to it, and I used a pair of earbuds and just aimed the microphone in the general direction of whoever was speaking. It worked very well for my temporary needs. The specific model I used is probably no longer available - this was around a decade ago and it was already an older piece of equipment - but something similar might help this student and be easier to set up than a two-way FM system. -------------------------- Andrea Dietrich She / Her / Hers Accommodation Specialist Student Disability Services Cornell University Cornell Health, Level 5 110 Ho Plaza Ithaca, NY 14853 Email: adietrich@cornell.edu Phone: (607) 254-4545 Fax: (607) 255-1562 Web: sds.cornell.edu *Please note that confidentiality of non-encrypted e-mail communication cannot be guaranteed. I would add, having been a professor for many years, few of us are permitted to pick our own textbooks. This adoption of curriculum comes from the department chairs, so let's aim some PR to university department chairs and those responsible for adopting textbooks and curricula. Another department worthy of our efforts in proselytizing Born Accessible curricula is course development and/or the faculty development departments. First, we at Benetech and at other organizations worldwide are advocating to publishers to make their titles Born accessible. In Europe, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) requires that all digital publications are to be fully accessible by June 2023. This is having a huge impact in the publishing industry, and because many higher education publishers sell throughout the world, we have reason to be optimistic. The Global Certified Accessible (GCA) service run by Benetech/Bookshare is having a huge impact today. The publishers who are GCA certified are producing terrific titles that are Born Accessible. All the GCA approved titles are also in the Bookshare collection, but right now they are hard to identify if they are GCA approved, or just the run-of-the-mill contributions from publishers. We will be exposing more metadata about this in the future. I will post here when available. All the titles that are GCA certified can also be found at the Benetech Accessible eBookstore found at: https://benetechaccessiblebooks.vitalsource.com/ Now for tips: If you find a title in the bookstore above, they are also in the Bookshare collection and will be top quality. Secondly, when identifying titles for your use, look for the latest copyright, because the publishers are improving their production workflow. Personally, my approach is to download three or four of the latest copyrighted titles in the EPUB 3 format in the area I am trying to learn. I then go through them and figure out which title is best. I delete the ones that are inferior. Finally, we have been advocating that professors look at the accessibility metadata in the VitalSource and RedShelf bookstores and pick titles for the courses that are accessible! We are working hard to transform the publishing industry! Publishers should be using the Accessibility Checker for EPUB (ACE by DAISY) and use the Simple Manual Accessibility Reporting Tool (SMART) to improve the accessibility of their titles. So, join us in advocating for Born Accessible titles from all publishers. Best George From: athen-list > On Behalf Of Deborah Armstrong Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2023, 1:58 PM To: 'Access Technology Higher Education Network' > Subject: [Athen] My opinion on Bookshare I?ve been wanting to write this up for a while. There?s been conversation on the list about the errors in Bookshare books, and here?s my take: I became a Bookshare member in 2002; I was an early adopter and was downloading books a month after the organization got started. As a service that lets people share books they scanned, it worked great. Nobody expected perfection. We were happy to jus have the book to read. Books on their platform work great if you just want to read with speech or Braille. But if you expect good formatting, reliable page markup ? reliable any markup in fact, forget it. The problem isn?t necessarily with their books but with the promise that you?ll get the same experience as if you could read the printed book. You won?t! Last year I was struggling to learn SQL. I?m still not very good at it. This was mainly because the books had diagrams that weren?t included in either the PDFS I got from the publisher for my courses or the ones on Bookshare. The publisher can decide not to include images. They want you after all to buy the book. Or at least rent it. I ended up renting one of my textbooks so I could have all the images, even though I?m blind. I can always get someone to describe an image if it?s actually in the book. (Even so I never really grasped the difference between inner joins and outer joins.) Bookshare is great for fiction, literature and essay-style nonfiction. I like reading technical books in Braille and Bookshare makes that possible as well. It?s just not very useful for textbooks if you expect the printed textbook experience. The publisher can give Bookshare the online version of the book which is missing content. They can choose to exclude all or some of the visual content. Or the book is scanned and therefore the formatting is non-existent or inconsistent. I love Bookshare but that?s because my expectations are pretty low. --Debee _______________________________________________ athen-list mailing list athen-list@mailman12.u.washington.edu http://mailman12.u.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/athen-list -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Recommendations from these departments also carry a lot of weight in this area. My thoughts.
