[Athen] MathType Alternative?

Actually, George, the software has been updated several times in the last two years, adding in some key symbols that were missing, and adding in chem symbols as well. It is still my preferred way to create accessible math, because it has such a wealth of tools at hand. I pay an academic price for mine, so it is $35 a year or so per seat. Since we have a production lab, we buy several seats. A couple hundred bucks, for something that does the job, doesn’t phase me at all. We spend way more than that on our campus supporting dubious pursuits, like college football. 😊

The software has not been developed in decades, and the Math editing in Word is up to the job. I canceled my subscription a year ago.

$57.50 is not unreasonable at all for a software this professional and powerful. They have a discount for academics. They have versions for server install, cloud based/by subscription, and hard copy (disc version).

I would suggest having the department chair or IT get in touch with the sales manager at WIRIS and find out what sort of pricing discount you could get for X # of licenses, a campus license (making it available to staff and students as well as your office), and find out options for best pricing. There are some options available. EquatIO is good but not nearly as robust and practical over all for the production of mathematical formulas & equations as MathType is.

I get no kickback for this PSA ;>)

Greetings,

The head of our math department reached out to ask about alternatives to MathType for creating accessible equations. Evidently the cost has doubled so they are wanting to look into other options. Do you all have any recommendations for something that would help the faculty make math accessible?

One option that they are considering is Equatio - does it work well with Word? - and does it produce a similar output for the students?

Please excuse the cross posting

Thanks so much!
