Our students preferred this graphic method over embossed graphics. You can find more information on our website https://www.cwu.edu/student-life/student-support/central-access/ In order to create a free cost and timeline estimate for you, I just need to be able to see all the graphics needed. Do you have a PDF copy of this book? We would be happy to help and our queue has room currently for new projects. One of my student's is in need of an embossed braille version of the following Physics textbook: * How Things Work: The Physics of Everyday Life (Sixth Edition) Author: Louis A. Bloomfield ISBN-13: 9781119188544 Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated I would appreciate if anyone could let me know if they have an electronic braille file for the textbook or the tactile graphics for the diagrams in the book that can be embossed. The student already has a digital version from Bookshare. I would also appreciate if anyone could recommend competent tactile graphic producers with a quick turn-around. Have a great day! I agree It is important to communicate with the student. It is definitely easier when the student already knows what enlarged print configurations work for them. Trouble comes in newly diagnosed situations where the student is at a loss trying to figure out what suits them the best. Sometimes they are also dealing with coming to terms with the diagnosis and may not have the resource to find the specifications by trial and error on their own. I feel as though this particular issue has more to do with library lending than it does with ADA protections, but I agree that it doesn't bode well for the future of access to information as a whole. However, this type of ruling does still directly impact us. Being able to digitally access library materials is a great resource for book conversion, cutting down time required for scanning or being able to acquire better quality in the case of course readers. Pardon my ignorance, but is there any decentralized (non-institutional) entity that works to conserve and protect these types of access-related tools that are so useful to our work? I personally am feeling the loss of several excellent resources over the last 10 years, and much seems precariously perched on the shoulders of large (and sometimes fickle) institutions. *Xanth King* Accessible Formats Technology Specialist Pronouns: They/Them/Theirs Wheeler Hall, Basement Level, Room 22 On Tue, Apr 2, 2024 at 12:28?PM Ali Steenis via athen-list < athen-list@u.washington.edu> wrote: > Hi all, > > > > I wonder if the judge?s reasoning behind this 2023 lawsuit brought by 4 > big publishers > > prompted Georgia Tech to pull funding for ATN. Please contact your college IT Help Desk if you have any questions I'm no legal expert either, but I do feel as though ATN was a bit different, as it seemed to be a collaboration with publishers. While the lawsuit does not target disability services directly, the judge noted that the case for the defense rests on ?the notion that lawfully acquiring a copyrighted print book entitles the recipient to make an unauthorized copy and distribute it in place of the print book, so long as it does not simultaneously lend the print book.? The judge sided that there is no legal foundation for this kind of notion. Obviously we have disability rights laws on our side here but this kind of ruling makes me nervous for the future of how alternative formats work functions in our institutions. Thoughts?
