[Athen] Screen Reader Accessible version of Building Java Programs

Hello All,

As an update from Bookshare:

The title originated as an OCR scanned document that Bookshare did; it did not originate from a publisher file, sadly. Bookshare gets the best results when the publisher provides an EPUB file that is Born Accessible. That is the reason no images are present.

I encourage all DSO staff to demand that publishers produce Born Accessible publications and donate those to Bookshare. Professors should also select Born Accessible publications for their courses. Once the publishers are doing their part, we can solve this problem. I also want to recognize the many Global Certified Accessible (GCA)publishers that are doing a great job in providing content to Bookshare. These titles are wonderful!

Best
George

Hi,

I downloaded the title as EPUB and also reviewed it online with the Bookshare Web Reader.

The structure of the book looks good with headings and tables.

I too did not find any images in the title.

The primary format used at Bookshare is EPUB, which is the format most publishers use for their digital content. The other formats are derived from the EPUB, so it is understandable that if the EPUB does not have images, the Word version would not as well.

I will bring this to the collection development and the technical team.

Best
George

Hi all,
I just want to ask if anyone has looked in depth at the files being provided by Bookshare? I pulled the Word files for this book and, even without having the original publisher PDF to compare to, there are some red flags like images omitted, figure headings listed but no figures included and that was just in looking at the first few pages of this. This is a Pearson book so I would hope if Julia reached out to Pearson and explained the need for screen reader accessibility that they could provide a better copy than this. I had one of my technicians who is a computer science student take a look at this file. She has 6 years of experience with Java and 2 years of document conversion experience working in our office and she was concerned that a student would be given such a poorly converted Word document. We would be happy to help with any conversion needs.
Best regards,
Adrienne
