The Best Text-to-Speech Apps for Android

1. Google's Native Text-to-Speech Feature

A built-in feature on Android devices, ideal for basic text-to-speech needs. It integrates seamlessly with other Google apps and supports multiple languages. Users can adjust speech rate and pitch. This feature is free and works well for straightforward TTS needs

2. Voice Aloud Reader

A versatile app that reads aloud various types of content, including websites, emails, and eBooks. It offers a free version with most features, though ads are present. The app supports sharing specific text blocks for TTS conversion and organizing text-to-speech notes using a playlist feature.

3. Speechify

A comprehensive TTS app that handles a wide range of content types, including PDFs and emails. It offers a free version and paid plans with advanced features like high-speed reading and AI-powered natural voices. It's highly regarded for its quality of speech output and user-friendly design.

4. T2S: Text to Voice

An efficient app for converting text files to speech. It supports creating or opening text files and converting them to speech instantly. Users can adjust pitch and speech rate, and the app includes features like "Copy to Speak" and a browser mode for reading web content aloud. It's free with ads, with a Pro version available to remove ads.

5. Narrator's Voice

Popular for creating voiceovers, especially for YouTube and TikTok, Narrator's Voice supports multiple languages and includes fun sound effects. It allows users to save audio files in MP3 format. The free version has limited features and contains ads.

6. Pocket

Primarily a read-later app, Pocket also offers TTS functionality to read saved articles aloud. It supports offline listening and various languages and voices. The TTS features are available in the free version, making it suitable for those who want to listen to saved content on the go.

7. TalkFree

A simple, user-friendly TTS app that allows users to paste text for conversion to speech. It supports multiple languages and offers basic functionality. However, it lacks some advanced features, such as a pause button during playback.

8. iSpeech Translator

A TTS app that supports over 50 languages and allows translation between languages. It's completely free and does not include ads, making it a straightforward option for users needing multilingual support.

9. Kurzweil 3000

A robust educational software designed to support students with reading, writing, and studying needs, particularly those with learning disabilities. It includes high-quality TTS capabilities, study aids, and writing support. While comprehensive, it is a paid solution, typically requiring a subscription.

A versatile eBook reader for Android with integrated TTS capabilities. It supports a wide range of file formats and offers customizable reading settings, such as speech rate and pitch adjustment. The app is ideal for users looking for a stable and feature-rich reading and TTS experience.

11. Legere Reader (formerly VoiceDream Reader for Android)

An accessibility-focused app with strong TTS capabilities, supporting multiple languages and cloud service integration. While it provides robust TTS features, users have reported issues with settings resetting after updates, which may affect usability.

I use Moon+ reader pro for TTS on Android. VoiceDream for android was bought out and became Legere reader, which resets itself every time it updates and I gave up on it for Moon+.

Thanks,

D.

Hi all,

I have a student looking for free or low-cost apps for text-to-speech they can use on their Android phone. I used to recommend VoiceDream, but they stopped supporting Android a while ago. I'm curious what you all are suggesting to your students.

Thanks in advance!
