Message-ID: <5B8D7EFB-6D6F-4B91-AAFE-6C0C92C430A9@bellevuecollege.edu> Hi all, At our institution, student organization leaders are busy creating posters for their events and messaging their designs on social media. One thing I?ve noticed ? and I?m pretty sure this has happened in sync with increased use of templated design-your-own tools like Canva and Adobe Express ? is that accessibility is becoming a bigger issue with these posters and designs. It seems like the templates are co-opted in ways that weren?t intended -- so for example, instead of using all caps just for the title or italics just for the byline, all caps or italics are used for the entire poster because it looks cool. Lack of contrast due to fancy backgrounds or a cutesy background/foreground interaction is another issue I am seeing with almost every design. Do any of you have a good SINGLE SOURCE for accessibility tips that I could pass along to our student leaders? I don?t feel like I have one good resource I can point students to and I also don?t feel like I?m an expert and can write something up for them. In students? busy lives, though, they like to have one resource to go (usually ChatGPT?). Thank you for any tips or thoughts! I've been having problems with the Audible sync app on my Windows 11 desktop computer. I found out on the weekend that support for the audible app for windows was discontinued in March 2024 with the final date being March 2025. There are many of us who use a victor reader stream as our listening device and have subscribed to audible content for years. The Audible sync app was the only means we have of activating our MP3 player and now this is no longer available. The advantage to using a tool like the victor reader stream is that there is no display and we can operate it completely with buttons. The trend seems to be to force us to use either android or iOS devices to consume our audible content. This removes choice. This also means that using some of the features of the audible apps on mobile device devices is awkward, especially when listening while falling asleep, or waking up in the middle of the night. We can't simply press buttons and set timers or move to chapters. We may have to unlock devices, locate the app, and then perform the task we want. I've been using Audible content with a victor reader stream for around 20 years and this is significantly going to impact my ability to purchase audible content and to read it. I'm not sure why Microsoft has done this, however, perhaps they can be persuaded to backtrack. https://help.audible.com/s/article/audible-app-download-discontinued-on-win11?language=en_US When Audible and human wear refused to work together to support the victor reader stream with audible sync, there was a Grass roots petition that finally comma after three or four years, got the two of them working together so that we had support for the stream in Audible sync. Maintaining accessibility and inclusion in design should not be this difficult! We shouldn't have to sign petitions. Every time tools are removed. I've been having problems with the Audible sync app on my Windows 11 desktop computer. The discontinuation of the Audible Sync app for Windows has put many long-time customers, especially those who rely on devices like the Victor Reader Stream, in a difficult position. Your frustration is completely understandable, particularly given how integral these tools can be for users who need a tactile, screen-free experience. Why This Matters The Victor Reader Stream?s button-driven navigation is invaluable for people who are blind, have low vision, or simply prefer a dedicated device rather than a smartphone or tablet. The shift toward relying solely on mobile operating systems (iOS or Android) does indeed reduce user choice, which can disproportionately affect those who have used the same accessible workflows for decades. Historical Precedent It is encouraging that previously, a grassroots petition was able to bring Audible and HumanWare (the maker of the Victor Reader Stream) to the table to restore compatibility. This shows that user voices can influence corporate decisions, especially when you have a critical mass of supporters and clear communication about the real-world impact of these changes. Potential Next Steps 1. Petition and Advocacy: * Start or join a new petition: Websites like Change.org or dedicated advocacy platforms for accessibility issues can help garner widespread support. * Leverage social media: Post your concerns on social media platforms and be sure to tag both Audible and Microsoft, as well as disability rights organizations, to draw attention to the issue. 2. Engage with Official Channels: * Contact Audible Customer Support: Call or write to Audible explaining how this decision affects you and others who rely on accessible hardware. If enough customers underscore the importance of Victor Reader Stream support, it might prompt Audible to reconsider. * Email HumanWare: Let them know what the loss of Audible Sync on Windows means to you. They might have insights into ongoing discussions or potential workarounds. Since HumanWare previously worked with Audible to restore compatibility, their involvement may again be crucial. * Approach Microsoft?s Accessibility Team: Microsoft does have accessibility advocates. While Microsoft may have less direct control over Audible?s decisions, highlighting that the removal of the Windows app erodes accessibility can put pressure on both companies. 3. Engage with Consumer Advocacy Organizations: * Reach out to organizations that specialize in digital accessibility and disability rights. Groups like the National Federation of the Blind, American Council of the Blind, or the RNIB in the UK might be interested in championing this issue or advising on next steps. * Technology publications and advocacy-focused blogs, podcasts or newsletters like our own would likely be interested in your story. Journalistic coverage can spur public pressure. 4. Consider Alternative Workarounds (Short-Term): * If you have older versions of the software, they might continue to work for a while, though this is not a long-term solution. * Some users have explored third-party conversion tools or screen-reader friendly apps to manage and playback their files. While this isn?t ideal and may violate Audible?s terms of service, it?s worth researching any accessible, legitimate, third-party audiobook management solutions. 5. Make the Accessibility and Usability Case Clearly: * In communications, emphasize why a dedicated hardware device is so much more accessible for certain tasks. Clarify how button navigation, tactile feedback, and not having to rely on a touch screen directly improves the listening experience, safety, and independence. * Highlight the longevity and loyalty of customers who?ve used Audible content through devices like the Victor Reader Stream for 10-20 years. Longer-Term Outlook Companies often claim that discontinuing certain platforms is due to maintenance costs or the complexity of supporting multiple ecosystems. Demonstrating that there?s a dedicated user base dependent on this functionality for accessibility reasons can sometimes convince them that continuing support is not just a business decision but a moral and inclusive one. Given your history of successful advocacy, this situation, while discouraging, can potentially be reversed or mitigated with enough organized effort. It shouldn?t take petitions and public pressure to maintain accessible options, but until the industry fully commits to universal design, advocacy remains our strongest tool. Wishing you the very best in your efforts. Don?t hesitate to rally others to ensure that these companies understand the real human impact of their decisions. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <01af01db5002$6cbbdf50$46339df0$@toptechtidbits.com> Providing an enlarged Scantron sheet for a student who is blind or low-vision presents challenges, as standard optical mark recognition (OMR) scanners are calibrated for specific form sizes and layouts. Modifying these parameters can lead to scanning errors. Currently, Scantron does not offer large-print versions of their standard forms. Alternative Solutions: 1. Custom OMR Forms: Some companies specialize in creating custom OMR forms tailored to specific needs. These forms can be designed with larger print and bubbles, but it's crucial to ensure compatibility with existing scanning equipment. Consulting with your institution's IT or assessment department can provide guidance on this option. 2. Assistive Technology: Leveraging technology can empower students to complete assessments independently: * Digital Exams: Administering the exam electronically allows the student to adjust font sizes and contrast settings according to their preferences. * Screen Readers and Magnification Software: Tools like screen readers or screen magnifiers can assist in navigating digital exams. Resources such as Teaching Students with Visual Impairments offer insights into accessible educational materials. 3. Alternative Answer Sheets: If the student prefers a physical format, consider providing a large-print answer sheet where they can mark responses. While this sheet may not be scannable, manual grading ensures the student's independence is respected. 4. Consultation with Accessibility Services: Engaging with organizations specializing in accessible education can offer tailored solutions. For example, the Perkins School for the Blind provides resources on making educational materials accessible to students with visual impairments. Considerations: * Compatibility: Ensure any custom or alternative forms are compatible with your institution's scanning and grading systems to prevent processing issues. * Student Preferences: Involve the student in discussions about alternative formats to ensure the chosen solution aligns with their comfort and independence. * Pilot Testing: Before full implementation, test your chosen solution to identify and address any potential challenges. While standard large-print Scantron sheets are not readily available, exploring these alternatives can help accommodate the student's needs while maintaining the integrity of the assessment process. Here are some suggestions that might help resolve the issue: 1. Ensure Proper Ink or Toner Usage: Swell paper reacts to carbon-based black ink or toner. If you're printing Braille or diagrams, verify that your printer uses carbon-based black ink or toner, as some modern printers, especially inkjets, may not. Laser printers typically use carbon-based toner, which is effective for this purpose. 2. Check Printer Settings: When printing on capsule paper, use the manual feed option and print one page at a time to prevent the printer from overheating, which could cause premature swelling of the paper. Setting the printer to handle heavy paper can also be beneficial. 3. Use Appropriate Fonts and Software Settings: If you're using a Braille font, ensure that your software's auto-correct features are disabled, as they might inadvertently change Braille characters back to standard print fonts. 4. Verify Machine Settings: Ensure that your raised line machine (such as a PIAF or Swell Form Graphics Machine) is set to the correct temperature and that the paper is fed properly. Preheating the machine by running a few sheets of regular paper through it can lead to more consistent results, especially with sensitive swell papers that require moderate heat. 5. Consult the User Manual: Refer to the user manual of your specific machine for detailed instructions and troubleshooting tips. For example, the PIAF User Guide provides comprehensive information on operation and problem-solving. 6. Seek Professional Assistance: If the problem persists, consider reaching out to the manufacturer's customer support or a professional experienced with tactile graphics machines for further assistance. I hope these suggestions help you successfully produce your Swell Braille diagrams. ? Aaron Di Blasi, PMP ?The greatest barrier to accessibility is indifference.? ? Does anyone in this group use Google Docs, Sheets, and/or Slides quite a bit? I'm testing and trying to create best practices for each, but for certain things, I feel a bit stuck. For example, in Google Sheets, for tabular data, it seems that most of the "Verbalize to screen reader" commands within the Accessibility menu do not work, such as "verbalize on column changes" or "verbalize on row changes," with or without the data being formatted as a table. When trying to read the headers for a data cell, the best that I can come up with is using the shortcut to verbalize the entire column or entire row and then silencing after the header is read. And that is only understandable if there is no content in the sheet before where the headers actually begin. I'm also finding that resizing an image cannot be done via keyboard, and adding alt text to an image when placed within a cell cannot be done via keyboard. If anyone has experience who I could maybe talk to a bit more about any of these Google products, I would appreciate it! Thank you, Robin [Nelnet Logo] Robin Eckelberry IT Software Engineer ? Of course, Google?s G Suite apps often update, so sometimes solutions vary depending on the current interface. 1.) Navigating and ?Verbalizing? Data in Google Sheets Freezing Headers One recommended practice is to freeze the row and column headers. Although it doesn?t automatically cause screen readers to announce headers for each cell, it does keep the header rows/columns in view, making manual referencing easier: 1. Open the View menu. 2. Select Freeze ? pick 1 row (or however many header rows you have). 3. If you have a column header, also select Freeze ? pick 1 column. Named Ranges for Tables * Using Data ? Named ranges? sometimes helps with navigation for screen readers. * You can define a named range for the ?table? area, and that can give you a quick way to jump to or reference it. Verbalizing Row/Column Headers * As you?ve noted, ?Verbalize on row/column changes? is inconsistent depending on the screen reader and browser. * A common workaround is the same as yours: use the shortcuts to read the entire row or column, then interrupt the speech once you?ve heard the necessary header. * Some screen readers (JAWS, NVDA) have custom table reading commands that might help. For instance, pressing certain reading shortcuts (e.g., NVDA?s NVDA + Shift + C to read column headers) may or may not work in Sheets depending on updates. Official Docs * Google?s official Screen Reader support page for Sheets: Google Sheets accessibility documentation 2.) Resizing Images via Keyboard Resizing images strictly by keyboard in Google Docs or Sheets is tricky. Here are a few workarounds: 1. Access the Image?s Position & Size Sidebar (if available) * Focus on the image (using Tab or arrow keys to navigate until the image is selected). * Press Shift + F10 (or the Context Menu key) to bring up the context menu. * Look for an option like Image options or Size and rotation (it can vary by app). * In some cases, you can type in numerical values for width/height. 2. Use the Format Menu (in Google Docs) * With the image selected, open the Format menu ? Image ? Image options (or Alt text). * This opens a sidebar for size, rotation, and other settings. You can usually navigate these options with Tab and the arrow keys. (If you?re in Google Sheets specifically, image manipulation can be more limited than in Docs/Slides. You might consider inserting images in a drawing object for more robust editing.) 3. Adding Alt Text to Images in a Cell When an image is placed inside a cell, the usual steps are: 1. Focus on or select the image (Tab or arrow keys, or use the navigation to highlight the cell). 2. Press Shift + F10 (right-click equivalent) to open the context menu. 3. Look for Alt text or Image options ? Alt text. 4. Fill in the description and save. In some cases, especially if the image is ?inline? within the cell or behind an additional layer, the context menu might not include ?Alt text.? If that happens: * Try using the Format ? Alt text menu approach (in Docs/Slides). * Or move the image out of the cell into the drawing canvas or an inline object, then add alt text. Unfortunately, Google Sheets often lags behind Docs/Slides in alt-text handling for images. Sometimes the only workaround is to insert the image as a drawing (Insert ? Drawing) and then add alt text within the Drawing tool. 4. Additional Resources and Best Practices * Google Accessibility Shortcuts: * Docs Editor Keyboard Shortcuts * Using G Suite with Screen Readers * NVDA & JAWS Scripts for Google Apps: * There are occasional community add-ons or scripts that improve navigation. Checking communities like NVDA Add-ons might help. * ChromeVox (if using a Chromebook or Chrome browser with ChromeVox installed) sometimes behaves differently from JAWS/NVDA. It may or may not better handle Sheets? verbalization features. 5. Finding and Sharing Workarounds Because these apps are constantly updated, community knowledge is extremely valuable. If you have a group using G Suite with different screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack, ChromeVox), it?s helpful to compare notes. Sometimes a method that doesn?t work in NVDA might partially work in JAWS, or vice versa. If you still have trouble: 1. File a Feedback Report in the Google product (Help ? Report a problem). 2. Post in the Google Accessibility Help Community (Google Help Forums) for direct input from Google?s product experts or other advanced users. I hope some of these tips and references help you explore workarounds in Sheets, Docs, and Slides. If you have more specific scenarios or run into a new keyboard trap, feel free to reach out again. The more we share findings in the accessibility community, the quicker we discover (or inspire Google to fix) these gaps. Best of luck! Thank you, Robin Robin Eckelberry IT Software Engineer ? ZjQcmQRYFpfptBannerEnd Hi Robin, Below are some tips, workarounds, and references I?ve collected that may help. In Google Sheets, certain parts of tables do not seem to be keyboard accessible. For example, after formatting a range of data as a table, three features display above the first column header: a table name, table dropdown menu, and a views button. These can be accessed via mouse and with the virtual cursor using screen readers but not with a keyboard only. I've submitted a request to Google Accessibility to work on that. Thanks! 1.
