Hello Tess,
The BBC recently made this page available for different types of alt text needs: https://www.bbc.com/gel/how-to-write-text-descriptions-alt-text
And then there’s the dyslexic demo to demonstrate how text may be seen in posters. This also works great for instructors who ask “Why do I need to provide extra time for a 2 minute quiz?”: https://geon.github.io/programming/2016/03/03/dsxyliea

Hello Tess,
It's great that you're aiming to improve accessibility in student-designed posters and social media graphics. A single, user-friendly resource that might be exactly what you're looking for is the "Dos and Don'ts on Designing for Accessibility" by the UK Government Digital Service. This resource offers simple, illustrated guidelines covering key accessibility principles like color contrast, typography, and layout. The visual format makes it quick and easy for busy students to grasp and implement the best practices. Link below.
Additionally, since many students use Canva, they have an Accessibility Design Guide as well that provides tips on creating accessible designs using their platform. It covers aspects like text readability, color choices, and image descriptions. Link below.
Finally, there's WebAIM's Principles of Accessible Design, which, while a bit more involved, may provide benefit as well.

I hope these resources help your student leaders to create more accessible and inclusive designs. 😊

Subject: [Athen] accessibility resource for students?
Hi all,
At our institution, student organization leaders are busy creating posters for their events and messaging their designs on social media.
One thing I’ve noticed – and I’m pretty sure this has happened in sync with increased use of templated design-your-own tools like Canva and Adobe Express – is that accessibility is becoming a bigger issue with these posters and designs.
It seems like the templates are co-opted in ways that weren’t intended -- so for example, instead of using all caps just for the title or italics just for the byline, all caps or italics are used for the entire poster because it looks cool. Lack of contrast due to fancy backgrounds or a cutesy background/foreground interaction is another issue I am seeing with almost every design.
Do any of you have a good SINGLE SOURCE for accessibility tips that I could pass along to our student leaders?
I don’t feel like I have one good resource I can point students to and I also don’t feel like I’m an expert and can write something up for them. In students’ busy lives, though, they like to have one resource to go (usually ChatGPT…).
Thank you for any tips or thoughts!
Tess
