Our Campus Technology Resources folks came to us with this new technology that does not seem to be mentioned on those webpages. It involves a ceiling microphone station that includes multiple microphones that do an exceptional job of picking up a wandering professor and can be calibrated for other noise in the room, like the HVAC system. It then sends audio to the internet. A student would snap a QR code to get access to the webpage where they can tap into the audio feed. The student can then play the audio through their own device to Bluetooth headphones or have it input to transcription like Otter.ai. They say that one system for one room could run $15-20K, but could be moved into a different classroom between semesters as needed. They are interested in experiences that other campuses have had with these systems, as they want to choose the right product to test out. One concern I have would be any lag between the professor?s speech in the room and it coming through over the internet. It replaced our then very aged and starting to fail ViewPlus Premier , the slower cousin of the Elite. (Just to be clear, we were very happy with the Premier and was comfortable and glad we were able to replace it with a newer and faster version.) - Index Basic-D v5 - Our other work horse for primarily embossing text (and every once in a while simple figures). Pretty sturdy given abuse/volume we put it through like the v3 that we replaced. Though ours seems to have a strange issue with interpoint & box lines we're still trying to figure out...but that's a different and long story - ViewPlus Delta - We bought this fella in between our Premier dying and were hopeful it could be a nice hybrid between our (then) ViewPlus Premier in how we did our tactile graphics and also the Braille from our Index Basic-D. Didn't quite fit our use case so we don't fire it up as often. Biggest complaint I have is the sheet feed mechanism gives us a lot of trouble. Supposedly newer editions fixed it...so I'm told by the vendor. - Bonus: Harpo Mountbatten - We have an older version. Not really for volume embossing but we acquired this and have occasionally used it to print once in a while special projects or whatnot. Handy since prior to our Delta, all our embossing is via continuous feed and this one did sheets. So if the budget allows and your need requires it, we've been very happy with our ViewPlus Elite handling the tactile graphics while leaving the text embossing to our Index Basic-D. The ViewPlus Elite gives more of a pyramid dots...so the Braille dots aren't as pronounced but helps aid in complex/finer detail on tactile graphics. The Index Basic-D handles the volume and gives very good firm Braille dots. Feel free to ask me on or off list if you want me to elaborate anything in more detail. Best of luck on your hunt~! -Paul On Wed, Feb 7, 2024 at 11:35?AM Edward Martinez wrote: > Good Afternoon, > > > > I have been tasked with purchasing a new Braille printer for my college > but before I started to conduct my own research I was curious if there were > any recommendation, either positive or negative? Are you purchasing new or replacing/updating an existing Braille embosser? If existing one is being replaced, you might already know this. If not, it?s worth noting this tidbit: Braille embossers are LOUD and create an impressive amount of dust. Find a room that can be sound proofed and if needed a dust collection system. Of course, embossing paper could have been remarkably improved since my last production experience and dust may no longer be a concern. I hope that I am overlooking something really simple in ABBYY - we would love to have the document language (nearly always English) exported as a document property when we remediate a PDF. ABBYY is clearly recognizing English as the language of the document. However, the metadata options do not include language in anywhere we have currently attempted to look. Is there a simple way to include this when using ABBYY? My current workaround it to open the PDF in Adobe and set the language in the document properties. They have been a part of ISO 14289 since version 1. The page Labels let you identify a cover page separate from the main body of the PDF. They also let you assign preface pages that may be Roman Numerals. Without Page Labels, we can't accurately identify the page we're on. Page numbers are NOT to be tagged in PDFs...that is what Page Labels are for. Page Labels not only provide this accurate information to those of us using adaptive technology, but to everyone. For example, if a PDF has three pages in Roman Numerals and page Labels have not been implemented, anyone can press Ctrl + Shift + N and enter iii and they will be told that the page does not exist. With the correct Page Labels, pressing Ctrl + Shift + N and entering iii will take you to the preface page Roman Numeral iii. As I say, these keyboard commands use to work so we could bypass the Ctrl + Shift +N and simply get the current page number. They don't anymore. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi, this is a good question. First of all, how does this student read documents? Do they use word files, PDF files, or braille .brf files, or embossed hard copy braille? In any case, you will need to convert the MusicXML files to braille separately and then insert the results into the document afterwords. There might be a way to embed/insert unicode braille into a word document, but I'm not entirely sure how that would work. The technology includes both mainstream technology (e.g., tablets, computers) and specialized assistive technology for people with visual impairments (e.g., braille notetakers, video magnifiers, JAWS, VoiceOver). We are asking for your help to advertise our study. We are seeking four groups of individuals: - *High school students* with visual impairments in grades 9-12 enrolled in an academic math (e.g., algebra, geometry) who use technology at school and work with a teacher of students with visual impairments. - *College students* with visual impairments at 2 or 4 year colleges/universities who have had a math class within the last 2 years and who use technology at college. College students may have had a visual impairment in high school or acquired it post-high school. - *Teachers of students with visual impairments* who have 3 years or more of teaching experience and have one or more high school students who use technology in math class. - *General education math teachers* who have a student with a visual impairment in grades 9-12 with a visual impairment in their academic math class (e.g., algebra, geometry) and who have taught math at the high school level for 3 years or more. Individuals who wish to participate can go to the recruitment form or copy and paste this link into your web browser: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dnDem4QNP6Y5GqW Please share the attached flier that explains the study in more detail with those who may wish to participate. Here is a really good text-to-speech program for Hebrew: Narakeet . In keeping with the state slogan from Missouri "Show Me," I decided to test this out this morning and ran the first chapter of the book of Ruth in Hebrew, saved as a PDF file and ran it through Abbyy Fine Reader, selecting English & Hebrew as the recognition languages. I uploaded the file to Narakeet . My Hebrew is somewhat rusty now, but from what I could tell it read the file correctly. I do remember in my foreign language translation profession days that there was some trick to typing Hebrew incorrectly in the Microsoft operating system software to get the vowels to be placed properly. Now with an international version of the Microsoft operating system it's easy enough to switch the direction in which a language is written, in this case right to left, and the vowels are placed correctly after the consonants. Jaws 18 is now available and works in Hebrew with right to left reading capabilities. What is the output you need for your student? Text-to-speech? Screen reader accessible? Braille? If your student needs to have this in EPUB format, here's some information on how to convert to an EPUB 3 for access in Hebrew. Wink, that information is super helpful! The situation is that a PhD student is doing their thesis on the history of Jewish Poetry, and we're trying to get them accessible pdf/epubs of some out of print books where the publisher has disappeared/non-responsive. With Abbyy OCR (newest version) and Omnipage, they're just getting gibberish, which might be related to the known issue with Arabic with Abbyy (it still has issues with the right-to-left text). Or it might be because these are high level academic texts in Older Hebrew with Modern annotations. We have no in-house expertise, and the vendors we've contacted refused because they can't guarantee accurate and accessible Hebrew. The dept is in the process of hiring an expert, but it'll take a very long time and doesn't help the student access these texts right now. We're also looking at perhaps doing high quality scans of the books that the student can use intensive magnification on. So any help or suggestions or referrals are appreciated! Thanks, D. DBT works well with MathType expressions: Using MathType with Duxbury Braille Translator (wiris.com) This assumes you have MathType on hand. If not, it is not that expensive to purchase. I agree that the HTML output is disappointing. They went to the effort to build in MathJax's SVG output but left out the MathML so there's nothing for a screenreader to read. --Steve Noble steve.noble@louisville.edu 502-969-3088 ________________________________ From: athen-list on behalf of Michael Cantino Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2024 3:49 PM To: athen-list@u.washington.edu Subject: Re: [Athen] Creating accessible math with MathKicker You don't often get email from mcantino@nwresd.k12.or.us. I had similar results to what others here have reported. I tested on Windows 10 with JAWS 2023. * OCR was surprisingly good * Math content in the HTML output couldn't be read by the screen reader * Word documents worked best. JAWS read all the math really well and provided a good Nemeth transcription on the braille display * I opened the Word file in Duxbury to see how well Duxbury translated the document. The math was an absolute mess. Overall, good for converting documents on the fly and reading with a screen reader. Currently doesn't look great for a braille production workflow.
